Hoosier Tire Midwest Sprint Car Series: (20 Entries)
WISSMILLER NUMBER ONE AT DAUGHERTY MSCS SHOW
Boswell, IN - June 25, 2016 - The Hoosier Tire Midwest Sprint Car Series capped the first half of the season with an appearance at Daugherty Speedway. The 3/8s mile oval was a new hunting ground for many of the MSCS drivers on hand to support the series. But some of the veterans had been there before. One of those was Mitch Wissmiller. The Saybrook, IL, driver and former MSCS Champion came to race. His car was fast. The inversion based on the redraw put his sprint car on the pole for the feature. He shot into the lead and that is where he ran for the entire 25 laps. The victory was worth $2,000!
Nick Bilbee also had a fast machine. The Indianapolis driver had posted the second fastest qualifying time. Bilbee closely followed by Carson Short took up the pursuit of Wissmiller. The three left the field behind and were soon in lapped traffic which in itself presented packs of cars to contend with at times. On the final lap Bilbee closed in and finished just .054 seconds behind the winner. Carson Short was only a second off the winning pace in third place.
Chris Gurley and Jon Stanbrough were immersed in a race of their own. The two veteran drivers battled for the fourth spot throughout the event. Gurley prevailed. Stanbrough was fifth in the Paul Hazen sprinter. Rookie Tyler Hewitt finished sixth. Brandon Mattox was next, having returned to the seat of his own number 28. Kent Schmidt pitted in the infield work area on a caution to replace a tire. He rejoined the race before the green flag and moved back up through the field to finish eighth. Brandon Morin and Donny Brackett rounded out the top ten.
Chad Davenport picked up the Wilwood Tuff Brakes Award in finishing eleventh. Brandon Morin was the Keizer Aluminum Wheels Hard Charger of the Race. He was the only driver who was able to gain more than 3 spots. There was only one caution period in the feature followed by the very quick final 8 laps!
Corey Smith from Kokomo, IN, had the overall fastest time during group qualifying. Smith turned a lap of 13.905 seconds. However he was an early scratch in the racing program and did not compete in the heat races. Rookie Nevil Algie finished his heat with smoke pouring from his car due to a blown head gasket. He was not able to start the feature. Ken Drangmeister lost an engine in the feature.
A big holiday weekend is next up on the Midwest Sprint Car Series schedule. MSCS will be racing Saturday July 2nd to headline the second night of the two day Bill Gardner Sprintacular at the Lincoln Park Speedway. Sunday evening July 3rd MSCS will be involved in the Southern Indiana Sprint Stampede at Tri-State Speedway. The series will share the program with the Winged MOWA Sprint Car Series.
