USAC SOUTHWEST SPRINT CARS INVADE QUEEN CREEK SATURDAY

JUNE 8, 2016... After successful “Border Tour” races at El Paso and Las Cruces, the USAC SouthWest Sprint Cars will head to Queen Creek’s Arizona Speedway this Saturday, June 11th. Promoted by Jonah Trussel and located within ET Motopark, the tenth point race will also feature Sport Mods, ModLites, and Bombers. Since April 13, 2013, nineteen USAC SouthWest Sprint Car races have been held at the Queen Creek facility. Three-time and defending series champion R.J. Johnson leads all drivers with eleven wins followed by “Chargin” Charles Davis Jr. (5), “The Magic Man” Mike Martin (1), Josh Pelkey (1), and Stevie Sussex (1). To date, Johnson and Sussex have already claimed victory at Arizona Speedway in 2016.

Heading to Queen Creek, R.J. Johnson (Tempe, Arizona) has a 27-point lead over the competition. Racing Bill Michael’s #77M Kodiak Products / Beal’s Auto Body Sherman, Johnson ran third at El Paso and Las Cruces. To date, the second generation driver has three feature wins, five heat race victories, five top-qualifier awards, fourteen top-10 finishes, and 91 feature laps led on the season. R.J. leads all drivers with thirty-five series wins and will be looking to extend his point lead with a victory this Saturday night.

Stevie Sussex (Tempe, Arizona) ranks second in the championship chase. Driving Mike Burkhart’s #21AZ Stratis Construction / Westin Diversified RSS, Sussex won both “Border Tour” races at El Paso and Las Cruces. At press time, Stevie has five feature wins, five heat race victories, two top-qualifier awards, one hard charger award, nine top-10 finishes, and 112 feature laps led. Stevie ranks fourth in series wins with nine triumphs and will have his sights on gaining valuable points with a victory at Queen Creek.

“Chargin” Charles Davis Jr. (Buckeye, Arizona) sits third in the USAC SouthWest point chase. Piloting the Massey Motorsports’ #50 RSS Industries / Rod End Supply RSS, Davis scored fourth at El Paso and ran second at Las Cruces. To date, the five-time Arizona champion has eight heat race victories, two top-qualifier awards, one hard charger award, thirteen top-10 finishes, and 34 feature laps led on the year. “Chargin” Charles is second on the series win list with 13 main events and will be one of the favorites to watch on Saturday.

“The Magic Man” Mike Martin (Yuma, Arizona) is fourth in the point standings. Racing his #16 Sherwin-Williams / Boulevard Truck Maxim, Martin took sixth at El Paso and scored fourth at Las Cruces. At press time, the former Hall of Fame Classic winner has four heat race victories, two hard charger awards, twelve top-10 finishes, and 27 feature laps led in the campaign. “The Magic Man” is tied with Josh Pelkey for fifth on the series win list and will be looking to earn his sixth SouthWest triumph.

Matt Rossi (Glendale, Arizona) has climbed to fifth in the championship points. Driving the family owned #02 Apache Scapes / IWR Spike, Rossi ran fifth at El Paso and sixth at Las Cruces. Heading to Arizona Speedway, the former Western World 360 Champion has one heat race victory, one semi-main win, six top-10 finishes, and one feature lap led to his credit. This Saturday, Matt will be looking to score his fourth USAC SouthWest main event win.

Among the other drivers expected to be in action are Nick Aiuto, “The Bull” Tye Mihocko, Josh Pelkey, Andy Reinbold, Dennis Gile, Chris Bonneau, Shon Deskins, Brian Hosford, Landon Cling, Dustin Burkhart, “The Radio Flyer” Bruce St. James, Tom Ogle, Michael Curtis, Spencer Hill, and more.

Arizona Speedway is located at 47346 N. Ironwood Road in Queen Creek, just five miles south of Mesa. To get to the track, exit Ironwood Drive on US 60, then head four miles south.
