FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Amsoil USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series

AUSTIN WILLIAMS TOPS PERRIS “SALUTE TO INDY”
By Lance Jennings

JUNE 2, 2016... Leading all 30 laps, Austin Williams (Yorba Linda, California) earned his first “home track” victory last Saturday night at Perris Auto Speedway. For Williams, the $2,500 “Salute to Indy” triumph was the fourth Amsoil USAC/CRA Sprint Car win of his career. Richard Vander Weerd, Jake Swanson, Mike Spencer, and “The Demon” Damion Gardner rounded out the top-five drivers.

Racing Jack Jory’s #2 John Jory Corporation / AMA Plastics Spike, Austin Williams dominated the main event. Making his way through slower traffic, Williams had several challenges by Fast Qualifier Brody Roa. Roa managed to slip by Williams for the top spot, but the pass was soon erased by a caution flag. Having excellent restarts, Austin shook free from the competition and claimed the checkered flags.

Earlier in the program, Williams qualified fifth out of twenty-five racers and scored third in his heat race. The 2009 Rookie of the Year returns to Perris on June 11th ranked fifth in points with three top-10 finishes on the season.

Richard Vander Weerd (Visalia, California) had a solid night with a second place run at the “Salute to Indy.” Driving the family owned #10 Vander Weerd Construction / Stone Gate Development Maxim, Richard was sixth quick in time trials and placed third in his heat race. The 2011 USAC West Coast Champion is second in the point chase with two heat race victories, four top-10 finishes, and 21 feature laps led.

Jake Swanson (Anaheim, California) claimed third in the Perris main event. Piloting Tom and Laurie Sertich’s #92 Huntington Beach Glass & Mirror / Clackamas Rigging & Transfer Victory, Swanson qualified fourth overall and finished third in his heat race. The 2011 Rookie of the Year left Perris sitting third in points with one Woodland Auto Display Fat Time Award, one heat race victory, one Brown & Miller Racing Solutions Semi-Main win, and four top-10 finishes.

Mike Spencer (Temecula, California) scored fourth in his debut for Gansen Engineering Motorsports after starting eighth. Racing the #4S Trench Shoring / Sander Engineering Maxim, Spencer was eighth fast in time trials and ran second to Damion Gardner in his heat race. The five-time champion is fourth in the point chase with four top-10 finishes and 17 feature laps led on the year.

“The Demon” Damion Gardner (Concord, California) rebounded from an ignition box problem to take fifth in the “Salute to Indy.” Driving Mark Alexander’s #4 Scott Sales Company / Weld Racing Spike, Gardner qualified second overall and won the 10-lap DJ Safety Heat Race #2. The four-time champion is sixth in points with three top-10 finishes and 20 feature laps led in the campaign.

Jace Vander Weerd (Visalia, California) earned the night’s BR Motorsports / King Racing Products “Hard Charger / Best Passing Job” honors with a seventh place run from fifteenth. Piloting the family owned #88 Vander Weerd Construction / Stone Gate Development Maxim, Jace was sixteenth quick in time trials and won the 10-lap Extreme Mufflers Heat Race #1. The 2010 Rookie of the Year heads to Perris ranked thirteenth in points with two heat race victories and one top-10 finish.

Brody Roa (Garden Grove, California) earned the program’s Woodland Auto Display Fast Time Award. Racing the BR Performance owned #91R HD Industries / Lee & Norma Leonard Maxim, Roa ran second to Jace Vander Weerd in his heat race. Running up front during most of the main event, Brody pressured Williams for the lead before a mechanical ill resulted in an eighth place finish. The defending 360 Western World Champion is the point leader on the strength of strong finishes and four top-10 finishes.

Nic Faas (Huntington Beach, California) made his return to racing and won the Circle Track Performance / Keizer Aluminum Wheels Heat Race #3. Driving Keith Ford’s #73 Berry Pack / Walker Filtration Systems Spike, Faas qualified ninth overall and scored nineteenth after an early tangle. The 2008 Rookie of the Year is thirty-fifth in the point standings.
