Matt Hein continues NSRA title defense in Roseburg

This Saturday, reigning Northwest Sprintcar Racing Association champion Matt Hein of Roseburg, Oregon will take his growing points lead into the event at his hometown Douglas County Speedway. While he’s holding onto to a points lead and is looking for his third victory this year, Hein is looking forward to this particular event as it is the annual Don Hein Memorial race, named for his late grandfather, who was a icon of racing in southern Oregon, particularly at the Douglas County Speedway.

Don Hein, in a career that spanned three decades, won five track championships and was a winner of the Nickel Cup five times at Douglas County Speedway, which is now a 4/10-mile asphalt oval. It was at that very track last year where Matt Hein picked up his first career NSRA victory, which he used as a launch pad as he won two more races en route to his first championship. Now Matt will look to add his name to the list of winners of Don Hein Memorial.

Driving the Hein Racing No. 98 Shaver-powered Beast sponsored by Coastline West Insulation, Independent Motor Rebuilders, Tonka Excavation LLC, Long’s Building Supplies, C&R Striping Company and Oregon Tool & Supply, Hein opened up his 2009 campaign by winning the NSRA’s season opener at Meridian Speedway in Idaho and was the overall points winner of the Diamond Cup at the end of May. In the tour’s other race at Douglas County Speedway in June, Matt finished second to Rick Brown in the main event.

At Spokane County Raceway in July, Hein broke the all-time track record in qualifying and was easily on his way to another win, but blown tire sent him crashing into the wall and ruined what looked like was going to be an easy victory. Two weeks later, however, Matt bounced back with a win at Ephrata Raceway Park on August 1st. Two weeks later, Hein made his first trip to Western Speedway in Canada for the Daffodil Cup. He won the special Battle of the Border race and would go on to finish fifth in the Daffodil Cup main event.

After this Saturday’s race in Roseburg, Hein and the rest of the NSRA drivers have three races remaining. On September 12th is the 3rd annual Rory Price Memorial at Evergreen Speedway in Monroe, Washington. Hein was the big winner of the event last year at the big .646-mile oval. On September 25th and 26th, the Matt hopes to wrap up his second consecutive championship during another two-night event at Meridian Speedway, which sits just outside Boise.

At 21 years of age, Matt Hein is one of the top pavement sprint car racers on the west coast, having multiple main event victories to his credit along with the 2008 Northwest Sprintcar Racing Association championship. Matt would like to thank all of his sponsors and fans for their great support.
