Fairgrounds dismisses idea of micro and midget racing

Tulsa Fairgrounds Expo Square officials announced today that outdoor races will not be held at the fairgrounds. Officials were approached by a racing group earlier this month about using Driller’s Stadium to host micro and midget car races.

After study and ample time for public comment, officials have decided such a use of the facility would not be feasible.

Such activities at the stadium would affect the surrounding residents and businesses. County Commissioner Karen Keith, a member of the Tulsa County Public Facilities Authority, represents the surrounding neighborhood. “When this option was presented to me, my first question was: how does this impact the neighborhood? I asked neighbors to let me know how they felt about this issue and they responded accordingly,” said Keith. “They made it clear, and I agree, that this is not a good thing for the neighborhood.”

“Every possible event will always be thoroughly reviewed and considered by the staff of Expo Square. A major part of any review is the impact it will have our neighbors,” said Mark Andrus, president & CEO of Expo Square. “Expo Square will continue to look at every possible type of event that might serve the people of Tulsa County and northeastern Oklahoma,” he added.

John Baker, a resident of the adjacent neighborhood, was glad to hear the results of the review. “I know this is a relief for the neighborhood. After consideration of the noise level, it became clear that this is not a good use of our fairgrounds. There are too many other potential uses for our facilities that will not disrupt the neighborhood,” he said.

WOW surprise-surprise.. It's tough for inter city racing facilities to get support anymore and that is just not wright but it is what it is. That's a bad deal I guess they only want one racing venue a year that brings in millions of out of town dollars every year with nation wide coverage. Good call morons they must be in cahoot's with OKC city council...

Well thats too bad.

What the hell is going to be done with that stadium then ??

Tear it down & build a parking lot, that would be my guess.

Kinda funny how racin was there before anyone else as were the fairgrounds yet people can move into the neighborhood and demand it to leave. The whole plan was to have late afternoon races and be done by 9:30 on Saturdays yet the mid-town douchebags had to open up their mouths.

The Tulsa City Council will probably use the facility to hold concerts. Concerts that will surely exceed the noise level of any racing event, and then factor in all of the extra Police and security involved with those events. All of this when Tulsa and OKC are laying off Law Enforcement. The revenue from a weekly used facility would certainly cover the cost for City maintenance and up keep making the facility self sufficient.

I guess I just don't get it, these people that move into a home knowing they are in proximity of the Fair Grounds in any City and knowing there will be regular activities held on that property. Do these same Citizens call and complain during the State Fair of Oklahoma or during the Tulsa State Fair about traffic and limited access to their precious newly bought property. These facilities have been in place for years and were built for Public use.

Our current Politician's all seem to have special interest that for some reason do not include the common man or his family when it comes to entertainment. The goal of our current elected officials seems to hinge on Major sporting events without regard to what pays the bills, or the steady economic impact that a weekly venue brings to a City. Allot of businesses outside the Racing venue benefit from the weekly patrons, ie; Restaurants, Gas Stations, Hotels, etc.

For a board of simple minded people (Ctiy Council) to not recognise in black and white the economic impact that Auto Racing brings into their community is absurd.

If you knowingly purchase a plot of land in the flight zone of an Airport, where does that leave you to complain about noise issues. Pretty simple in my book deal with it or find yourself another piece of property somewheres else.

Allan, to go along with what you said small business is getting the boot. We are in serious trouble in America as small business owners. Our elected officials find it in thier best interest to make sure that large corporations stay open no matter what the consequence to the small business. I strongly believe that small business is what has held this country together. Eliminating us will likely kill the economy even worse. They don't care as long as they still get a big check for helping big business. That is my opinion. I'm not the smartest man around but I do have common sense unlike some of our highly educated officials.

Thanks for the opportunity to vent on David.

from Tommy Hahn

We just got word that the Tulsa County Commissioners are backing out on signing the contract for racing at Drillers Stadium. A few of the neighbors contacted the commissioners and complained about the noise that the races would create. If you want racing at Drillers Stadium please contact the commissioners listed below and let them know you want racing at Drillers Stadium. Please be polite and courteous. Just let them know we want racing at Drillers Stadium and think it is a good idea to generate income for the fairgrounds.
