Sammy Swindell Enters I-30 Speedway's 600 Nationals

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (September 12, 2007) – Sprint Car legend Sammy Swindell has visited victory lane at Little Rock's I-30 Speedway on nine occasions over the course of his storied career, including a triumph in the 1990 Short Track Nationals championship feature event.

But the Germantown, TN, ace will try to cash in on the biggest I-30 Speedway payday of his career when he competes in this weekend's Second Annual 600 Nationals presented by Hoosier Tires atop the high-banked, ¼-mile I-30 Speedway clay oval.

It was announced today that Swindell would take the wheel of a second entry provided by defending race winner Travis Senter, Jr., of Osceola, AR. Saturday night's finale of the 600 Nationals offers up a $10,000 winner's share.

Swindell's biggest take from I-30 Speedway thus far was his $6,500 Short Track Nationals victory in 1990. This year's 20th rendition of the Short Track Nationals pays out $20,000 to the winner.

Swindell's most recent action at I-30 Speedway in October of 2004 netted a Short Track Nationals preliminary feature win before finishing 13th in the finale.

Swindell will have his hands full this weekend when he straps into a 600cc Multi, as he'll take on well over 100 of the nation's top Micro Sprint shoes, each shooting for that $10,000 prize.

Following a test and tune practice session on Thursday night, September 13, two full nights of racing action will follow with the top six finishers in Friday night's 600 Nationals preliminary feature locked into Saturday night's $10,000-to-win finale. The balance of the field will start with a clean slate in the battle to fill out the 24-car starting field, with all starters collecting a minimum of $400.

All non-qualifiers will also collect $275 on Saturday night.

Also taking part in this year's version of the 600 Nationals will be the Horizon Mini Sprints Restricted "A" Class, with $1,000 earmarked for the winner.

For Sammy, winning this race will be much harder than winning the sprint car nationals there and it's not even close.

He couldn't have ran this race a couple years ago, last year was the first time this race was held.

well, lets look at it this way....didnt terry mccarl and danny lasoski run in the tulsa shootout a few years ago? if my memory serves me right, they didnt do all that well..the only reason they made it to the a main was because they got those promoters provisionals....travis senter does have some great equipment tho! so we'll see! i really dont think he'll make it to the big show!

EDIT

I just went and looked at the shootout website, lasoski finished 14th and mccarl finished 20th...this just shows even tho your great at big sprint cars, micros are a totally different animal!!!

Exactly, believe it or not, micros react much faster and things happen much faster than in sprint cars.

Okay, let's put it this way, THE MAN can drive race cars!! He just left California and Gold Cup with a top 5 finish! 2 WoO regulars in front of him and the rest ALL behind him! I'd put my money on him anyday of the week!

They already have 114 paid entries going into tonight's 600 action. And 'Sprint Bandit' qualifying format.

Should be a great show on the 1/4 mile high banks!

Here's Lonnie's recap:

Travis Senter locked into tonights $10,000 to win feature
Lonnie Wheatley, LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (September 14, 2007) – Skiatook, Oklahoma's Jerrod Wilson was the class of the field as the Second Annual 600 Nationals presented by Hoosier Tires kicked off at I-30 Speedway on Friday night.

Wilson wired the field in the non-stop 25-lap preliminary feature, besting a total of 125 entries from 19 different states as well as Australia to lock himself into Saturday night's $10,000-to-win 600 Nationals finale.

Also locked into Saturday's finale were the balance of the top six finishers, which included Oklahoma's Scott Sawyer, defending race winner Travis Senter, Jr., of Osceola, AR, California's Stan Yockey, Illini shoe Derek King and Indiana's Jonathan Hendrick.

Making it a Sooner State sweep of victory lane was Broken Arrow, OK, shoe Darien Roberts, who won the 15-lap Horizon Mini Sprints Restricted "A" Class main event.

While Wilson led Friday's preliminary feature in wire-to-wire fashion, he passed virtually everything in sight during the evening's qualifying action. Starting 12th in the second of ten heat races, Wilson charged all the way up to second and ranked second in passing points to Chris Andrews following heat race action.

Gridding the second of five qualifying races in tenth, Wilson blasted through the pack in short order and took the win to earn the pole position for the feature event.

Oklahoma City's Jason Lair was slated to start alongside Wilson in the feature event, but Senter moved up to the front row outside when Lair's engine gave way in the staging area moments before the field aligned.

Wilson outgunned Senter for the point at the drop of the green flag and never looked back. Reaching lapped traffic by the ninth circuit on the high-banked, ¼-mile clay oval, Wilson never faltered while slicing through traffic the rest of the way. "One down, one to go," Wilson commented in victory lane.

With Wilson out front, Sawyer took advantage of a Senter's progressively tightening machine to take the runner-up slot in the final laps. Senter held on for third in the non-stop affair, with Yockey a close fourth as King held off Hendrick for fifth.

Pennsylvania's Jake Murphy just missed an assured starting spot by finishing seventh, while Chris Berreth advanced from 15th to eighth. Aaron Reutzel raced from 20th to ninth, with 17th-starter Travis Elliott completing the top ten.

In the Horizon Mini Sprints feature event, Roberts outdueled Shane Fletcher over the middle portion of the race en route to capturing the checkered flag. Roberts and Fletcher are locked into Saturday night's $1,000 to win feature along with Shelby Henson, Brian Ritter, Devon Huff and Trent Taylor.

Twenty-five Horizon Mini Sprints brought the total number of cars in competition at I-30 Speedway on Friday night to 50.
