February Schedule Highlights so far...

The richest short track race in Texas history (and really, one of top paying Modified races in the nation these days!) is back for another stab at it on Daytona 500 weekend. The promoting crew of Mark Chewning and James and Becky Bryant will try once again to pay a 50-lap, open wheel modified Longhorn Round-Up feature winner $10,000 on the Sunday the 18th at Super Bowl Speedway. Qualifying is set for Fri & Sat the 16th & 17th with practice on Thursday the 15th. It's still $1000 just to start the A-main and starts 20 cars. In fact, the purse is the same as last year's weathered out event but there are least two changes of note:

- Entry fee is $200 if postmarked by February 1st, $300 after that date BUT, everyone gets full purse this year. Remember, for at least the last two years, you only got 75% of the advertised purse if you were a late entry.

- Legal tires include the American Racer G60 or KK704, the Hoosier 84.0/9.0-15 and the IMCA stamped Hoosier G60 although, that one's not printed on the flyer, the Bryants say it IS a legal tire for the Longhorn.

- IMCA "Type" Modifieds with 5 inch spoilers, bead locks on right rear, no aluminum heads, no v6s, same engine used to qualify must be run on Sunday and there is a $525 claim or swap rule for the feature. Usually the 20 that make that A aren't the claiming type though.

- $500 to start the B with top ten to A main. 11th place also gets $1000 with a 900-800-700-600-500 paydown to 20th after that. Non-qualifier features pay $500 to win and $200 to start so enter before February 1st and make a Non-qualifier feature and you'll at least get your entry fee back.

- SIMS Limited Modifieds will run three independent, NO entry fee shows on Fri-Sat-Sun with each race paying $500 to win and $50 to start. Cowtown has the same deal on the 9th & 10th! At Greenville, the B main pays $50 for 11th each night and $25 to start. So for 5 days of track time, that's a possible $2500 to win, $250 start to make all 5 A mains, NO entry fee deal. $75 to make at least the three B mains at Greenville. Not a bad way to start the season if you have a Limited. I don't know if IMCA Southern Sport Mods and SIMS rules are still so close to be virtually the same or not. Someboady else will have to tell us about that.

Other February Notes:

- ArkLaTex will NOT hold the Modified Madness in February THIS YEAR. Gene wants to finish the new pits and pit grandstand. Ark-La-Tex will hold the Qwik Race Cars Spring Nationals on March 23rd and 24th as their season opener. (March Schedule post -- soon to come -- for info on it.). There is a Winter Nationals at Ark-La-Tex Speedway this year on the 2nd weekend of November with a purse TBA though. Gene said The Madness MAY possibly return as February event in 2008.

- The Texas tradition of The Big Chill at Thunderbird -- although I missed getting a Flyer for it -- on the first weekend, the Fast 50 at Cowtown on the second one, the Longhorn on the third weekend and Abilene's Icebreaker on the fourth one appears in tack and ready to go. Waiting too see if Las Cruces will go for that 4th weekend instead of taking on the "800 pound gorilla" -- TMS -- again on the 1st weekend of March. Also waiting to see if the Houston area or south/central Texas area will announce any early season specials.

- The Florida tracks will hold their usual slate of UMP and Open Wheel Modified shows in February and that also means the $8000 to win at East Bay will be the night before the Daytona 500 with three $1500 to win shows each night leading up top that. That has pulled in Texas names like Kenny Gaddis and Robbie Starnes in the past.

- Late Models don't appear to have any conflicts in February. Waiting to see if SUPR holds their traditional Mardi Gars Nationals shows on the 4th weekend of February and I don't see why they wouldn't.

- The 360 Sprints and the 410/World of Outlaw type sprints (sometimes wingless too!) go head to head on Feb 2nd&3rd with USCS 360s at North Florida and the 410 s at East Bay. They may possibly do it again on the 9th and 10th. ASCS tentatively has a National ASCoT event in Loxley, Alabama on the 10th with the WoO in Volusia on the 9&10th and another possible ASCoT race somewhere on the 9th. If there is no NST or other national 410 series this year, then I suspect it will be a very good year for 360 Sprint Car racing. With two series basically doubling the purse for 410s last year, it was too tempting not to stick with a 410 program but with GW getting $50G and Jason Johnson getting $25G from ASCS this year, I think they could have a very big 2007 on the national scene.

Where exactly is Greenville Texas? Depending on distance from Central OK that might be worth seeing. Any OK drivers to attend? Also. Dogwater-----that potentially gives you 3 nig mod shows to hit.

Greenville is 30 miles northeast of Dallas on I-30.

Okies in past Longhorn Roundups include Randy Timms, William Gould, and Eddie Martin and I know there's been others.

Ha ha. Yeah. I plan on attending the LRU and TMS for sure. I'd like to make Cowtown's show as I've never been to the Fast 50 but we'll have to see.

The LRU typically draws in some pretty big modified names. Jason Hughes, Gary Andrews, Tommy Weder, Jr., Jay Sale, Bud Longpine, and Randy Bailey are a few other Oklahomans that I've seen run the show. Typically the racing is pretty good throughout the weekend but sometimes because they run on the same surface all weekend (not re-prepping the track each day) the track locks down for the final A-main. Its still a great race though. If you can brave the cold I highly recommend it. I just hope the weather holds out this year.

Also because its the first race of the season for most of the drivers the cars have new graphics and sheet metal on them so there are alot of pretty cars. Ha ha.

Yeah, pretty cars until they leave. I will be at one or maybe three of those. I am boogied boogied boogied about the USMTS at Enid.

That's the truth! I remember the first year I went I was amazed at how nice looking alot of the cars were, that particular year just so happened to be one of the roughest shows I've seen. Needless to say there were a lot of cars torn up and many of them left not looking as pretty as they did when they pulled in. Ha ha.

I'm pretty excited about the USMTS too. I was saying earlier this year that it is a shame that there wasn't a track in OK that brought in a modified touring series like the USMTS or NCRA. I'm glad to see that, that has changed. I hope that the local fans and drivers get out and support this show.

With the new promoter of Enid and Longpine bringing in the USMTS and Kraft Kars moving from MN to Woodward, OK it sounds like there have been some pretty big developments in the modified world taking place in OK over the off-season. It should make for an interesting 2007 season and beyond.

I agree with you Dogwater and I'll take it a step further. It's a shame Oklahoma City doesn't host a whole lot more big shows. It's such a nice facility and location all round. If it was run better I see no reason that USMTS, WoO Late Models, Lucas Oil Late Models, NCRA Sprints, Late models, and modifieds shouldn't be on the schedule. OKC NEVER runs into the the wee hours which is a problem some other big tracks have. You could run 2 or 3 weekly classes each time any of those series come to town. SFS should run all those big series along with WoO Sprint and several ASCS shows. The Late Models deal I'd think might work well as a nationals of some sort with NCRA, WoO, and SUPR all attending. Then maybe have another nationals between NCRA and ASCS sprints along with NCRA and USMTS mods. Now I know SFS isn't quite ready for a bunch of stuff like that. ANd instead of criticizing I would like to thank Lanny Edwards for all he has done to this point. I just feel that within the next few years more big time Sprint, Late Model, and Modified shows should be held here at SFS. In the future much more can be done. Better yet if SFS could get on the same page with other local tracks not all the big shows would have to be here. OKC could give mods the week off and say that weekend another track host a big mod race. I'm just saying there is a lot of potential that hasn't really been tapped into. Promoters in Oklahoma still continue to schedule against each other and in the end everyone loses, especially the fans.
