The heading to Canada post by Marty Boyer appears to have been changed into a link to Yahoo pointing to this link:

http://rds.yahoo.com/_ylt=A0oGkk8aTHJF0doAdwVXNyoA;_ylu=X3oDMTE3MzdlcDQzBGNvbG8DdwRsA1dTMQRwb3MD

Does this happen for anyone else? I tried closing my browser and re-clicking but get the same results.

IE 6.0.2900

That's wierd because you can "float" over the link and read the post.

I would have to say that the post was copied from yahoo and when it was posted in the form it also posted some code that made the link change. The down fall of letting users post HTML.

We got a notice at work today stating that effective January 1st they're going to require a passport for US citizens crossing the Canadian border. That might discourage some race fans who might have been thinking about making the trip.

Not only will all the US citizens be required to have passports (which some of them have from going to Australia), but the race teams should be required to have work visas to "work" in Canada.

Could be a logistical nightmare for most, if not all teams. Some of the crews and drivers are already in the US on work visas, now they will be required to get a Canadian work visa also.

Starting mid-January 2007 you will need a Passport to enter (or re-enter) the US by air or water. You will still be able to cross at any land crossings with standard ID until around July of 2008, but they will likely hassle you a little about getting a Passport.

The teams shouldn't need a work visa since they are technically work for and are being paid by a US based company (WoO). The Canadian based company I work for is often contracted to work in the US and Mexico and I've never had a problem crossing the border since I'm still working for a Canadian company.

Well, I was working for a US based company, Brownfield Promotions, Inc., when we went to Lethbridge and Edmonton for Speedweek, and was held at the border for 18 hours. Had to beg the magistrate and get papers that required that I did not work or attend classes in Canada before they would allow us to cross.

Very true about the police record and DUI. A few of the teams that crossed had problems because of that. Had to pay "restitution" to the Canadian government before they would be allowed in.

There is not one race team that is employed by the WoO. They are all independent contractors.

And unless the WoO are renting the track and promoting the show themselves, racers are not paid by them either.

Which also begs the question, are the purses paid in US or Cannuck currency?

I believe it is any felony conviction and you won't get into Canada if I read the signs correctly in Port Angeles, WA before boarding the ferry to Victoria. Regarding misdemeanors, I don't know.

Even if you don't have any felonies whatsoever, you may very well get bugged still by Canadian/U.S. customs if you're merely just crossing the border to attend a race. Last year, when I was still with the NSRA, I had trouble getting through Canadian customs, even though I have no felony convictions...I guess they had trouble believing at first that someone would be going by himself to the Daffodil Cup race (one of western Canada's biggest events) at Western Speedway and expected to be in Canadian territory for barely a day (Seriously, just there on Vancouver Island for the race!). I was held for almost half an hour before they let me through. Searched my car and everything. Probably didn't help that I did not have a passport, but golly.

Still, despite the border problem on my last visit to Canada, I want to make at least one visit to Edmonton next year, if not for WoO then maybe Can-Am or their Gold Cup. Here's hoping for a safe and incident free trip for all those wanting to go to the WoO show.

They started getting tougher at the border at the request of the US after 9-11, ironically.

Having crossed the border hundreds of times over the years I have a few tips. Smile, be pleasant and answer only what you are asked, idle conversation is not necessary or needed. The passport deal is generally for those that are travelling by air and sea and not required for land crosssings as far as I know. Welcome and enjoy your stay. Take It Easy.....

Everytime we have raced at Ohsweken with SOD they have always paid in US funds. SOD would notify the boarder crossing agents about the race and give them a heads up on trailers coming through and provide the paperwork to have ready with all the inventory in the trailer. The roughly 10-15 times I have been with a tow rig going across the boarder we have never been stopped. But of course we don't have a half million dollar rig either. Is there cases were someone has gotten pulled over, yes, but I would say that is not the norm.

Now the one area that could be a problem is teams bringing t-shirts and merchandise to sell. That can be a sticky issue.

I was up at Niagara Falls in October. Walked from the U.S. side to Canadian side and back a few hours later. On the way into Canada they had signs saying that a passport would be required as of Jan. '07 but I imagine there could be a little grace period there. The Canadian customs officers (I only saw two) were friendly and pretty low key. On our way back into the U.S. the mood was decidedly less casual and there were far more officers on duty. We didn't have any problems but we felt slightly uncomfortable even though we were U.S. citizens returning to our own country. One couple (they looked like Americans) and one small family (they looked like Asian tourists) had apparently been pulled to the side and detained for further screening. As far as the vehicle traffic was concerned there was only a slight backlog and it seemed like the cars practically breezed through in both directions but perhaps it only appeared that way. I imagine if you or your vehicle fit a certain 'profile' you will get their full attention.

Thanks 50 Stater, or John, right? It is pretty much the reality of what happens when crossing either border. I appreciate the tougher screening on the US side but ironically I get a much tougher time when heading back to MY country, go figure. NONE of the 19 guys flying or particiapting that day snuck into the US vis Canada and most were there on visas that expired.

Come up here have a good time and enjoy God's Country, Niagara Falls is pretty cool and only about an hour away, try it, you might like it. Take It Easy....

Without a doubt Canada is the hardest country to enter. I have travelled to several foreign countries, the only one I had a problem getting into was Canada. I got held up in immigration because I had a tool box, and was told I needed a work visa, which I did not have. I ended up telling them I was there for training, I think it made the hosers feel superior thinking the American needed training from them! And the DUI thing is right too, they asked me that when questioning me.

That's what the notice that came in our email said 50thStater, January 1, 2007. I work for BNSF Railway and the corporate office put out the notice for the benefit of our executives and Marketing people. I don't plan on going to Canada for the WoO next summer but I thought I'd share what I got in my email at work. They provided a link to applicable government sites so I presume that they know what they're talking about. I'd put my trust in what a Class 1 railroad tells their employees regarding corporate travel to visit Canadian customers and interline partners before I'd go by what I read on a racing message board.
