Tuesdays with TMAC – Crazy Stuff!

(Bill W) June 5, 2007 – Sometimes having a fast car doesn't reflect on your finish in the end. Terry McCarl had a fast car in Ohio, but his string of bad fortune continued at Sharon Speedway and Eldora Speedway last weekend. This week, he's looking forward to traveling to a pair of tracks he has seen success at in the past.

At Sharon on Friday night, things started poorly in qualifying, and ended with mechanical issues. "We got qualified bad, we've just had a bunch of bad luck. We won the B main, and the car was awesome!" said TMAC. "We could drive anywhere we wanted to go. In the A we had some tire problems. It sounds like a bunch of excuses, but goofy stuff is exactly what it was. We had a left rear tire shrink two inches with the air pressure right on. Crazy stuff is happening, but we're going to work through it. I think we're fast right now."

After a DNF at Sharon, the TMAC Motorsports team headed for the high banks of Eldora on Saturday night. "We had our usual (lack of) luck. We were passing (Joey) Saldana for fifth, and we packed the right rear full of mud. Like a dummy, I drove it for a couple laps, so it screwed up the driveline, and after that I had a vibration the whole race," said the Altoona ace.

That was the tip of the iceberg mechanically. "Then I had a hole in the right rear tire, a hole in the left front shock, the motor was overheating, and other than that, we were perfect!" joked TMAC. "One of my mounts to the fuel tank was ripped out. It paid not to be on the cushion, I guess!" In the end, a 19th place finish awaited.

Despite his problems, the driver of the Biggame Treestands #24 was complimentary of the Eldora staff and their track preparations, despite the rain in the area. "They did a nice job with the track. It's what you'd expect on a rainy day. We could run the top, and we were fast, so it was good."

Cuckoo for Kokomo (and Eagle)

Terry will head to Kokomo Speedway in Indiana tonight (Tuesday). He had an outstanding run at the banked ¼ mile bullring last September. "Last year we were fast there. We started eighth and got up to second. There were no yellows. We had a good car, so hopefully we can get it that good Tuesday night!"

On Saturday the WoO head to Eagle Raceway near Eagle, Nebraska and try to tame the high-banked 1/3 mile oval. TMAC ranks Eagle high on the fan excitement meter. "Eagle Raceway, if they get the track right, can be one of the best for the fans to watch a race."

Terry has timed well at both of this week's racetracks, but remains cautious. "We've qualified well in the past, but today's a new day," he says.

A-MAC and C-MAC

Austin and Carson McCarl had the week off of the Micro-Sprints, but will be back in action this Friday night at the English Creek Speedway south of Knoxville.

In"Terry"gation

Jim & Jan (Blackett) Tarter ask: What's a typical day/week like for a WoO driver/car owner?

TMAC answers: It really depends on whether I'm wearing the driver hat, the mechanic hat, or the owner hat. People laugh about drivers spending a lot of time on the telephone, but I can't spend enough time on the telephone. There are so many people to stay in contact with, as far as sponsors, product people, and others. It's like after Eldora, our car needs a lot of stuff. The fuel tank was junk, we had the shock problem, we had driveline problems, so you need to get stuff ordered and motors get worn out and you have to send them back. More importantly, this day in age, you have to stay in contact with your sponsors, more than ever. I probably don't get that done well enough, that's one of the reasons we have "Tuesday's with TMAC!" As far as the owner hat goes, usually Monday and Tuesday are full of bookwork, getting parts ordered and paying bills! Someone's gotta pay the bills!
