The racing world lost another friend today with the passing of Melvin "Mel" Brown, 83 of Carthage, Missouri. Mel owned Super Modified's in the late 60's and 70's that ran across the Midwest especially in Kansas and Oklahoma. He had many drivers throughout the years, but the most success came with Jerry Walkinstick at the wheel of the 61a. He later passed the torch on to his son Terry who built on Mel's success and made the Brown Racing Xpress an NCRA Champion with Terry Gray in the early 90's.

Mel was most proud of the evolution that came later when his grandson, Toby, climbed behind the wheel of the BRX Sprint Car. He was Toby's biggest fan and, along with his wife Teenie, never missed a race when Toby was behind the wheel. He was a successful trucking company owner, proud father and grandfather and friend to all those around the Midwest that he met at the track.

The family, especially Terry and Toby, pass along their thanks for all of the thoughts and prayers during the past few weeks. Funeral arrangements are pending, and will be passed along as they become finalized.

Visitation will take place on Wednesday night between 7 and 9 at Fairview Christian Church in Carthage, Missouri. Funeral Service will be Thursday at 10 at Fairview Christian Church. Burial will take place at the National Cemetary in Fort Scott, Kansas at 2:30 pm.
