WMRA to visit Stateline

Andrew Kunas

POST FALLS, Idaho – The Washington Midget Racing Association will make its lone appearance in Idaho this season on Saturday night when the series visits Stateline Speedway in Post Falls.

Stateline Speedway gets its name from its location, almost right on the state line between Washington and Idaho. In fact, the National Speedway Directory in the past has directed fans and race teams alike to get off the Interstate 90 freeway inside Washington. After taking the very last exit (299) before Idaho, they then cross the state line to reach the very Idaho track that is located only a couple of miles from a Washington freeway exit.

Dallas Melby of Ravensdale, Wash. is the hottest midget driver these days in the Northwest and he will be leading the pack onto the ¼-mile, high-banked, asphalt oval after scoring the win in last Saturday's season opener at South Sound Speedway near Tenino, Wash. Melby also won a BCRA event at Shasta Raceway Park in California in March and later took ninth in a 100-lap USAC Western States race at Madera Speedway, also in California.

Melby, who scored three victories and finished second in WMRA points last year, is piloting the Chris Melby No. 9 Blue Dot with a Stanton Mopar motor under the hood.

Everett, Wash. driver Matt Stone won his first WMRA main event in last year's event at Stateline, but Stone was unable to finish in last Saturday's event at South Sound. Stateline Speedway will be a welcome sight for Stone, who finished third in WMRA points in 2006. Stone will be driving the Stone & Fleming No. 10 Beast with an Esslinger engine. Stone's victory last year ironically came at the same track where he nearly won in August 2003, only to get tapped out of the way by many-time WMRA champion Rick Moss.

Stone's car will be one of the cars on display at the Hot Rod Café in Post Falls on Friday night between 5:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.

Tacoma's Evan Margeson set fast time at South Sound, finished third in his heat race, and then earned a second place finish aboard the Harold Beald No. 50 Beast with an Ed Pink Ford engine. Ken Ferris of DuPont, Wash. finished third aboard his own No. 28 Beast, which also carries an Ed Pink Ford motor.

Vader, Wash. youngster Brea Lopez finished fourth in the opener for her second top-five finish in as many starts this season. Lopez also finished third in same BCRA race at Shasta won by Melby. Lopez was also third fastest in qualifying and picked up a heat race victory on Saturday. The 18-year old Lopez will drive the Dan Press owned No. 25 Beast powered by an Esslinger engine.

Another young driver expected to race at Stateline on Saturday is Evan Funk, who is coming back to the pavement after racing on the dirt with the Northwest Sprint Challenge Series last Saturday. Funk, a 17-year-old out of La Conner, Wash., will drive for Rob Lindsey aboard the No. 23 Beast. Funk finished fourth for Lindsey at Shasta but crashed in the race at Madera two weeks later. Lindsey and Funk have been working to get the car back together for this Saturday's event at Stateline.

Ethan "Snake" Livernash, the 2006 WMRA Rookie of the Year from Spanaway, Wash., is coming off a sixth place finish at South Sound, where he also finished second to Lopez in his heat race. Livernash will pilot the Scott Livernash No. 55 Beast with an Esslinger.

Pit gates open at 1:00 p.m. with practice scheduled at 3:00 and qualifying at 5:30. Tickets are $10 for adults, $7 and for students ages 12 to 15, seniors, and active military and $5 for kids ages 6 to 11. Family passes are also available for $25.
