JONES TAKES "LAS VEGAS DIRT CLASSIC" OPENER

Regional-CRA Sprints
03/08/07

By Robert Mayson

Las Vegas, NV – March 8, 2007 – Tony Jones of Norco, Calif., masterfully guided his Alexander Trucking / La Villa Restaurant #No. 4 DRC to an opening night 30-lap USAC/CRA sprint car win in the “Las Vegas Dirt Classic” at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway dirt track.
Entering the evening as the series point leader, Jones' first win of the season came from the seventh starting position.  Rickie Gaunt took the lead on the first lap from the inside of the second row and would lead until being passed by a cushion-riding Jones on the sixth circuit.
Damion Gardner of Concord, Calif., narrowed the gap on Jones during the closing laps but would ultimately bring his Jason Leffler / Pace Electronics No. 71 DRC home in second-place.
Nextel Cup Regular J.J. Yeley, Phoenix, Ariz., thrilled the crowd with a spectacular run. Driving the Tony Smiley / David Zoriki No. 2A Extreme, Yeley was named the Hard-Charger of the race with his 22nd- to third-place run.
Riverside, California’s Darren Hagen and Marion, Indiana’s Scotty Weir rounded out the top-five.
Mike Spencer, who finished eighth in the feature, stated the evening by turning the fastest lap in time trials.  The only flipped of the night came on the opening lap of the main event after Charles Davis, r the green flag.  Davis ws not hurt.

It would be awfully hard for JJ to start 10th in the main with no qualifying time. He would have to start last in every event, which he did. Way to go JJ & team Smiley, what a hell of a run!
