   For those of you that have never seen this, it is something to see. The precision in the way they are parked is impressive. It is difficult to comprehend the size of the "Bone yard" and the number of aircraft stored there. Of course the important thing to remember is that they are all capable of being returned to flying condition if the need ever arises. If you are ever in the Tucson area, the weekly tours of the bone yard is still given through the Tucson Air Museum, located just south of Davis Monthan AFB. Both the museum and the bone yard are very popular attractions in the Arizona desert. It is difficult to comprehend the number of military aircraft in dead storage until you see these photographs! Even if you have seen this before, look again.
1- The 3rd largest Air Force in the world is sitting on the ground here.
2- It's the only unit in the U.S. Air Force that actually makes a profit.

One of those times I remember hearing we are spread thin.... HA! The US is never spread thin. We might B***H and we might Complain but I know if the situation came for me to kick some Tic Tac in Iraq I would be ready. Ofcourse I am only 24 but I live my life as normal and never inlisted. But I am only 1 of many Americans my age that would drop it and fight in a heart beat.
I think we need more Sprint car drivers in those Airplanes. I vote for DMJ as a fighter pilot.

if you are GIVEN that aircraft you could sell salvaged parts and pay for operational costs. looks like they could pay for a lot of costs with the planes out there.all that was said was that unit made a profit.
seems to me you could profit from an attitude salvage. roflmao.

Oh, I get it........Buy an aircraft for $38,000,000 (or more). Salvage it back to yourself and turn a profit......... after all, there are only a handfull of other countries out there flying F-14's and F-15's.... Saudi Arabia (F-15's), Israel (F-15's) and IRAN have the largest numbers of our aircraft, and we cut off Iran from spares last week (imagine that). There are only a hundred or two F-4's still operational.
I may need an attitude salvage, but I worked for DynCorp Technical Services maintaining aircraft for The US Army. I have seen more money wasted in 1 hour, than you or I will make in out lives. Believe me, they may say that Davis-Monthan is turning a profit, but in reality, the US government has already written off the aircraft, that way they can claim a "profit". It truly is a joke, just ask anyone else who has worked in aviation or for Uncle Sam.

One of the reasons the B-52's were parked that way, one of the stipulations of President Regan's Strategic Arms Reduction Treaties with Gorby was to reduce the number of Strategic Long Range Bombers and in order to prove it to the other side, inspections of the dismantled or inert weapony were called for. The desert locale was picked so they (The Commies) could use satelitte images more throughout the year instead of letting them on the soil. After all, we still kinda distrusted them.
After Strategic Air Command was dissolved, lots and lots of lots stuff was parked and dismantled.
Having been posted on Alert Bombers when I was doing my time in the USAF, I certainly do not miss the miles of walking around those big bastards in the snow, in the cold, without food, without a bathroom, without a working radio, and when the only source of any kind of life the-Lite-All ran out of diesel well, you were FUBAR.
Thanks for the bad memories....

My Son is currently preparing to leave for Iraq, he is 24 also.Why wait ? If you want to read something sad, check out last Sundays Washington Post story on how our Iraq vets are being treated, sad as hell.

It is indeed a shame.

Hawker: My brother has been an engineer with Boeing (formerly McDonnell Aircraft, then McD-Douglas) for over forty years. He started with the F-4 Phantom, now renamed the Wild Weasel. A couple of years ago, one of his friends that started there with him was the only engineer at Boeing still assigned to supporting the F-4.
