TATNELL WINS PRELIM A
“We are here to win a title and that’s what we are aiming for,” was the comment from Brooke Tatnell when he won the preliminary feature race at the 47th Australian Sprintcar Championship at the Perth Motorplex last night.
It sets the three-time champion up for a big showing when the main event is contested over 35 laps on tonight.
He won the 20-lap non-stop feature race from Ryan Farrell and Garry Brazier with all three showing they are not here for a cruise, but after the national title glory at the end of the three big nights.
“Sometimes it is best to run second or third and then make a couple of moves and make something happen,” Tatnell said.
It was a good recover for the team after they broke a rocker in the motor in hot laps and enlisted the help of engine builder Pete Morris.
Farrell and Brazier started off on the front row for the championship teaser with Tatnell and Robbie Farr starting the next row back.
Farrell won the dog fight to the first corner from Brazier and Tatnell and that’s how they ran for the first half of the race.
Brazier pulled up alongside Farrell midrace and was trying to get some drive from the different lines and while they were locked in this duel Tatnell went underneath to take the lead.
Tatnell was simply awesome in traffic and put some space between him and the rest of the field.
Brazier got by Farrell late but the WA champion was equal to the challenge and slide back to cross the line second.
Brazier wasn’t happy with how he finished.
“It was very disappointing…Brooke got lucky and it will be interesting to see what he does tomorrow night.”
Farrell said he needed to find a bit more for Saturday night.
“Second is as good as we could do tonight.
“Tomorrow night is another night, we will see how we go.”
Heat 9: Ryan Farrell showed everyone just how good he is around his home track when he stormed from position 12 for the win in the first bout of the night, finishing ahead of Jamie Maiolo and Max Dumesny.
Darren Mewett slid out of control in pits bend early in the race and cars were scampering everywhere to avoid him.
Jamie Maiolo, who started from position two, was the early leader but all eyes were on Farrell.
He got the front wheels up in the air as he cranked up the power on the back straight and got set to pass a couple more cars.
Just as Farrell went low to take the lead over Maiolo, the left rear wheel off Ken Sartori’s #92 sliced off as he approached the main straight.
On the restart Farrell was forced to start back in second but it was only a matter of time before he reclaimed the lead to set up his popular win.
Mark Wells was fourth and Trevor Green fifth.
“It’s the Australian title so you have got to get up in your seat and go,” Farrell said straight after the win.
“The track is a lot more racier and faster tonight, that’s the way I like it…I am good to go.”
Heat 10 “I am taking this place home,” was Cameron Gessner’s response immediately after winning heat 10 from Garry Brazier and Greg Hall.
Ben Ellement had steering problems at the back of the pack on the start but was able to regroup after Matt Brown slammed into the fence, forcing a full restart.
“I just drove around a bit too far….and just missed my spot where I needed to turn in and in I went,” Brown said on reflection.
Brazier started from six and was flying as he jostled his way through the pack.
He put in a big low line dive on Hall with four laps remaining and while it didn’t work at that stage and he was lucky to keep the A1 going, Brazier did make the move stick a couple of laps later.
“I just held it flat,”Gessner said after the win.
“We have had a really good weekend after being struggling with the car a bit, but have finally got the thing working.”
Heat 11: Brooke Tatnell was the early leader in heat 11 and he stayed out in front to win from Steven Lines and James McFadden.
McFadden had a bit of smoke coming from the Q29 but it didn’t hamper his performance, holding off attacks from Kris Coyle and Lines.
Mitchell Dumesny came to a stop in pits forcing a restarting.
Tatnell led away again while Lines picked off two spots to move to second early.
There was some good duels back in the pack involving Luch Monte, David Murcott and Warrenne Ekins.
‘We just have to figure out how to get this thing going quicker at the start,” Tatnell said after the win.
Heat 12 Danny Reidy was the early bolter in the final heat and went on to win from Adrian Maher and Shaun Bradford.
The red lights came on when Mat Muir slammed into the fence in pits bend.
Robbie Farr was up to second with six laps to go but Maher fought back and Bradford joined in for a three-way duel.
The field regrouped when Jodi Waldron moved off the track slowly.
Ian Loudoun put in some strong moves late for a well-deserved fourth.
Farr looked to have second all stitched up until he blew a right rear tyre on the last lap, forcing him to limp home at the back off the field with the Q7 riding on the rim.
