If you're a driver, or a friend of a driver, or a family member of a driver, be it midget, sprint car or another form of racing, please take a few minutes to read the article and take the necessary steps to get your driver protected....

While its good, and nice, that racing seems to come through when one of its own is injured, the STIDA insurance is just too inexpensive for a driver not to have coverage. Here's the link....

Chuck. Probably your best post ever!

Also....if you are a self employed race car driver the premiums may be 100% deductible...of course you would want to contact your Tax Preparer to discuss your individual situation...

Health Insurance Costs for Self-Employed Persons

If you were self-employed and had a net profit for the year, you may be able to deduct, as an adjustment to income, amounts paid for medical and qualified long-term care insurance on behalf of yourself, your spouse, and your dependents.

For those purposes, you were self-employed if you were a general partner (or a limited partner receiving guaranteed payments) or you received wages from an S corporation in which you were more than a 2% shareholder.

The insurance plan must be established under your trade or business and the deduction cannot be more than your earned income from that trade or business.

You cannot deduct payments for medical insurance for any month in which you were eligible to participate in a health plan subsidized by your employer or your spouse's employer. You cannot deduct payments for a qualified long-term care insurance contract for any month in which you were eligible to participate in a long-term care insurance plan subsidized by your employer or your spouse's employer.

If you qualify to take the deduction, use the Self-Employed Health Insurance Deduction Worksheet in the Form 1040 instructions to figure the amount you can deduct. But if any of the following applies, do not use the worksheet.

  • You had more than one source of income subject to self-employment tax.

  • You file Form 2555, Foreign Earned Income, or Form 2555-EZ, Foreign Earned Income Exclusion.

  • You are using amounts paid for qualified long-term care insurance to figure the deduction.

If you cannot use the worksheet in the Form 1040 instructions, use the worksheet in Publication 535, Business Expenses, to figure your deduction.

Note.

When figuring the amount you can deduct for insurance premiums, do not include any advance payments shown in box 1 of Form 1099-H. Also, if you are claiming the health coverage tax credit, subtract the amount shown on Form 8885, line 4 from the total insurance premiums you paid.

Also, do not include amounts paid for health insurance coverage with retirement plan distributions that were tax-free because you are a retired public safety officer.

Where to report. You take this deduction on Form 1040, line 29. If you itemize your deductions and do not claim 100% of your self-employed health insurance on line 29, include any remaining premiums with all other medical care expenses on Schedule A (Form 1040), subject to the 7.5% limit.

waste any time burning it down!

Thanks, Mark....

While I'm not a driver, as a long time fan and former crewman, I've often wondered why drivers' do not protect themselves better. After seeing what happened to Tim McCreadie at the Chili Bowl, and his lack of foresight to protect himself, I just decided that I had to do something.

My notification is something that I stole from another message board; and while I cannot endorse STIDA, I cannot fault it either. It seems to me that what it provides for such a low cost is a worthwhile purchase/investment.
