1991 World of Outlaws Copenhagen-Skoal Shootout Sprint Car Series
Inaugural Asphalt Nationals
Lakeside Speedway, Kansas City, Kansas
Saturday, November 9th, Preliminary Feature

Historic first racing event on asphalt for the WoO Sprint Car Series. Non points race as the season has already ended. The two-day purse is about $70,000 which ranks as the highest in the 36-year history of the Lakeside Speedway facility. Mid America Motorsports runs Lakeside Speedway and leased the track to RED Racing Inc. for the financial backing and promotion of the event. RED Racing is primarily owned by businessmen Bob Reid, Clyde Ellis and Jim Davis. A Friday test session was scrubbed due to ice and snow on the track from the weather issues earlier ion the week. Lakeside Speedway General Manager, John Renfro Jr. recruits notable Doug Clark to flag the events.

Mark Kinser-“I’m happy we’re able to hold off Sammy, I’ve been in enough of these to know you can’t breathe a sigh of relief until it’s over. A lot of things can happen when you think you have it in the bank with as much as ten feet to go. This is our standard dirt car, and we didn’t make any changes, I owe Jeff Bloom some thanks for suggesting some changes to help us get ready. My owners had been stressing this race since it was going to happen. I’m hoping the rules remain structured so we can stay with the same type of cars we use on dirt. I’m also hoping they stay with tracks like this one and they don’t race on high banked asphalt tracks. This will help keep things affordable for everyone.”

Sammy Swindell-“I didn’t know if we could catch him our not, we were having a little bit of trouble with lapped traffic and the car was pushing a bit. We were trying to make up lost ground and we got in the dust when we drifted high. We were there for s split second, but that’s all it took for Mark to get away from us.”

Frankie Kerr-“We just ran a good lap and we didn’t expect to have that kind of time, we were too slow at first and got it going late, we got better as the race got longer. I really like racing on asphalt. This is my fourth time on it and I think it will be really good for TV.”

Lap-33: Kerr and Blaney swap the 3rd spot until Kinser passed them both. Lap-35: Sammy Swindell wins by a ¼ lap for a 4 race winning streak.

Sammy Swindell-“It had been since 1976 that we’ve raced Sprints on asphalt I can understand why there may be a big desire on the part of the World of Outlaws to race more on asphalt. There are more and more asphalt tracks being built and it’s easier to televise. I think it’s the new thing coming. The purpose of the wings is to push the car to the ground and make it faster and safer. I have had the car go 175-180 miles per hour on a mile before. I think were going too fast. The car was working good and it’s nice to be on a roll like we are, but this race was different to what we are used to, as far as Mark, I wish his car could have been together, it would have been more challenging-but it would have been a lot tougher for him since he was starting behind us today. I was able to get into position and quickly run him down to lap him and run him down pretty quick. With the lead, I didn’t want to take any down trying to get around him.”

Mark Kinser-“I would like to thank my crew for being able to get my car back out on the track, we only had about thirty minutes to get the car put back together and it was our only goal to get the car on the track, we thought we could run with Sammy. I thought we showed it when he came up to lap us and could not get around us. With starting at the tail we just wanted to get a feel of the car and we took it easy, I was real happy with how we were able to move up by the end.”

Ted Johnson-“We are pleased with how it went off, when we come here next year we expect the weather to be warmer to where they can run a little higher on the track. We’ll probably run a two-day show and a one-day show next year. It’s a matter with working out the final details. I am glad we kept everyone off the wall. That was one of the things in the back of my mind. I though the fans saw some really good racing. I though the track worked hard at getting their facility ready.”

Rick Ferkel, WoO Competition Director-“Whenever you try something totally 180 degrees different, you could have to be concerned with what could happen, but it went pretty smooth. I am concerned about the time it took to get the program in and the lull we may have while drivers to get their tires heated up. But I think we learned a little from the experience. I thought we put on a race when was pleasing to the fan. It was good to see a race with no crashes. I’m quite happy about the whole thing. (On Lakeside Speedway): It’s quite impressive, I think this track is the type of facility promoters around the country will flock to and copy many of the things they have done here. A facility like this really helps upgrade the image of the sport. VIP suites are the kind of place to take corporate sponsors and encourage them to become involved in the sport, it’s fantastic.”
