Forler, Carneau repeat as Nick Seidelman earns first dirt win

Andrew Kunas

SALEM, Ore. – Spanaway, Washington brothers Nick and Tony Seidelman decided in the fall to bring their pavement midgets to the Oregon State Fairgrounds to take part in the Salem Indoor program. It’s now paid off for both of them.

Just over a month after Tony Seidelman won on the dirt for the first time, Nick pulled the same feat Saturday night in Salem, taking advantage of a mid-race spin by early leader Doug Kammerzell, who won the last NOMA midget event in Salem on December 2. After inheriting the lead Seidelman would not be caught by Mike McCann, Dave Pugsley Jr., or his own brother Tony as he cruised to the victory in the shortened 15-lap main event.

Both brothers decided to not sit around during the winter and instead come to Salem to have fun.

“We’re didn’t want to sit around. It is extra seat time for us also,” Nick Seidelman said.

Seidelman became the fourth different winner in as many events this winter season in NOMA midget competition and the sixth in as many events total since indoor midget racing began at the Oregon State Fairgrounds in January 2006. Seidelman also stopped Kammerzell’s bid for a second straight clean sweep in Salem.

Seidelman also became the third driver from a pavement background to win in six races on the 1/5-mile dirt oval in Salem. The racing happened in front of what appeared to be the largest crowd seen at the Oregon State Fairgrounds this year, though no spectator count was available.

Running second late in the event, McCann spun his car around and lost two positions. Pugsley, who won the season opener at Salem in November, would take the runner-up spot while Tony Seidelman finished third and Kammerzell fifth.

Scott Carneau of Portland picked up his second win of the season and third overall in Salem, taking the checkered flag in the 25-lap dwarf car main event, but had to hold off Ryan Baxter late in the race.

After Carneau reached slower traffic at about lap 11, which allowed Baxter and Henry Corbin III to catch up, Baxter passed Corbin for the second position. While Baxter and Corbin battled for second, however, Carneau took advantage and added a little more distance between himself and Baxter.

With some laps left, Baxter was able to chase down Carneau in time for one attempt at a pass. Baxter would fail to pass Carneau on the inside of turn four as they headed toward the checkered flag.

Corbin III finished third; followed by Mitch Sheeler, Henry Corbin II, two-time Salem winner Kelly Gutches, Keith Steenslid, Tim Manchester, Richard Petty, and B-Main winner Dean Prather.

With fourteen cars on hand, the dwarf car class had its best count of the year and its best since the first race in Salem a year ago.

Logan Forler won this third main event of the year in the 600cc stock micro-sprint feature, besting the ten-car field (out of 14 entries as well) in their 25-lap event. Forler took second place on a lap six restart before challenging Garrett Archer for the lead on lap ten. Forler took the lead after contact between himself and Archer in turn two, which sent Archer spinning.

After Archer’s misfortune, Forler would take the victory over Mitch Hoffses, Trey Starks, Archer, Jeff Westergard, Kyle Mehner, Kelsey Martin, Britton Lorentzon, Bob Woods, and Butch Johnson.

Finishing second last month, Stanley Steves won his first event of the year in the pro-4 modified main event, and Sammy Wright won another main event competing with the 600cc restricted micro-sprints. Picking the checkered flag in the cage kart exhibition was Jeffrey Rivers.

The next event in the Salem Indoor night schedule is February 3, which daytime kart races that morning and the morning after. More information, including schedules and rules, can be found at Cottage Grove Speedway’s website.
