Today the All Star Circuit of Champions, Midwest All Star Series, and
Ohio Speedweek web sites were infected with a virus by hackers.
DO NOT VISIT THESE SITES UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE!!!
If you do not have virus protection running on your system, your PC
could be infected.
We apologize for the problem and we're working on cleaning up the
mess. It could be several days before the virus has been terminated.
A notice will be sent when it is safe to return to the sites.
Reminder: The Midwest All Stars will kick
off the 2008 season at Benton Race Park on Friday, April 11th.

You need to stay away from joomla or any other free Content Management System. This will be a constant problem with using Joomla. Just search Google for joomla hacked site and you will see how much of a problem this is.
If you are interested I can convert the site to a custom program so that you will not be hacked again. I would have to host it though so I can control everything that is on the server.

I feel for you swamp. Mine was hacked about a year ago and I still have not replaced all the content. I did change from a community based site though. Hope it never happens again as it was a major PITA.

I've never understood why people would attack web sites. Especially one that doesn't have any political or social content. Best of luck to you guys getting everything back up to normal.

When I got back from the Chili Bowl in 2004 my computer had been taken over/hacked/whatever. $80 later, and two programs purchased it was still a no go. I downloaded Adaware (free program BTW) and it solved the problem. Less than a month later I bought a Apple Powermac. I still have it today. No problems, and I still have not had an issue trolling around. I can't honestly say that a Mac OS will solve a server problem, but it sure has freed up a lot of my time not running virus scans/etc/etc/etc! Never mind all the security program software that I haven't had to buy.

It's called Terrorism. They do not care what is on the website in most cases. The hackers have a program called a crawler that automatically craws all over the web looking for specific vulernerabilities on web servers. The crawler logs the web server when it finds a vulenerability so the hacker can craft an attack. 99.9% of hackers are overseas and there intent is Terrorism. With a few strokes of the keyboard a hacker can cause years of destruction which could cost thousands or millions of dollars to repair.

I've been running Apple computers since 1994 here, still waiting for the first virus. (I'm not saying it won't happen, just that it hasn't happened yet)

dbamer and Steve - Owning a mac may well help protect your personal computer from virus attacks however, it will not help protect your website which is hosted on a server. Two totally seperate issues.

Have someone close by that is familiar with Linux/Apache, set you up a Linux based server with Joomla. It isn't a Joomla problem .No more virus worries.It'll run non stop for the next 5 years if ya want it to.You'll never wanna use Winders again!
It's that simple.

Good suggestion. I ran Ubuntu on my wife's PC for over a year and never had any problems. I guess it's a pretty popular OS for servers and I can see why.

That's good advise..... most problems with joomla are with the components and MS. A good setup with Apache and smart use of 3rd party components will keep you out of trouble.

After spending the past 8 hours backing up my 15+ web sites on my personal server and setting all the config files to "unwritable" mode and checking all the file permissions...I am ready to quit the web design biz!!! This sucks. We host almost everything we do on "LunarPages" - and they have a pretty good track record, but when the site config files got compromised...we were sunk! It sounds like we'll be able to retrieve the site from their backups...so not all is lost just yet. I am brushing up on Joomla security out of necessity...not because I have any free time to do it. Worst part - I don't get paid for ANY of this wasted time!!!

Sorry to say Lunarpages may be one of the BIG problems. They have such a long list of unhappy customers they seem to bring in the best of the best when it comes to disruption.
But then again, config files still need to be protected and .....

Hmmm...never had a single complaint with Lunar on 20+ sites we've hosted there. Customer Service has been exceptional and that goes a long way when you do actually have problems. They haven't let me down yet!
