i am a sprint car fan that is unlucky enough to live about 3000 miles from sprint cars , i was lucky enough in the 80s to visit ascot park and a track called chula vista in southern california . am iright in thinking that a former speedway (motorcycle) rider sonny nutter raced there with a hemi powered car its just something i seemed to remember about a dream trip coming true . i have followed dirt track racing in the usa since seeing a picture in hotrod magazine in about 1963 thanks

Yes, there WAS a Hemi, had a few drivers, (Howard, Sweeney etc.) problem was that it had such a vibration, the drivers couldn't see. About that same time there was also a car with a blower, (20 car) had lots of power, but it didn't work well off the turns, then there was the big blocks, crank would want to keep turning after the driver let out of the throttle, and that didn't work well going in to the turn. Hard to beat a healthy Donovan! Seems like Mopar is the only thing that can do it on a regular basis, and even at that, the percentages are in the Donvans favor.

Lets check my memory, the super mods ran at the Copper Classic for the first time in 84 and those guys stayed up long nights all year long dreaming up wild ideas under run what you brung kinda rules. The rules were so loose some guys put a big engine and wing on a champ car and ran with them. Now those guys had the big wild offset engines and huge wings and tires. In a few years some of them were fast enough to make the Indy car field!
The last time the sprint's ran was 86 and a unknown driver Mike Bliss(not to me,I had seen him coming up in Portland Org) beat all the USAC and the other hot shoe's for the last sprint car race at PIR.Someone told me Snider had averaged (unofficially) 150 around the one mile.It was getting to fast.
When the silver crown cars took over they were running basically the same engine as today,350 ci.
I started going in 87 and man,It was the gathering of the clan. They sure have taken the class out of the classic.
Half the lies they tell about me aren't true.
