Has anyone ever ran type F transmission fluid with some STP engine additive mixed in it as a power steering fluid.

Had a local guy tell me that he's never ran any "high dollar" per se power steering fluids. He's always ran type F tranny fluid with 2 oz. of STP additive mixed in each quart to thicken it. Says he's been doing it since the early 80's with no power steering issues.

Anyone else ever done or tried anything like this?

Somebody's way overthinking it. I've always used whatever was available. Just a $2 quart of plain-jane power steering fluid.

Seems to me that this guy is spending way more on the stp than if he just used regular ole power steering fluid.

One time the auto parts store had coupons for free power steering fluid. It was about 10 years old and still worked!

You should never use automotive p/s fluids in sprint car steering systems. ONE there not temp rated for the extreme heat that we put them thru. TWO the lube and wear additives can be harmful to seals and other components. It's always best to use the manufactures specified fluids. Example: You would'nt use automotive brake fluid in your master cyl now would you? Fluids are every bit as important to your race car as anything else you by. Parts are expensive. Use quality fluids and follow manufactures directions.

I remember years ago reading a article specifying using GM power steering fluid & thats what we used for years.I never had a problem with any steering components caused by the fluid.

IIRC, KSE gears use recycled Saginaw cores, so I don't see why regular automotive PS fluid wouldn't work in their units?????

That said, I've never had any problems with the Amsoil that I use.
