Typically for me it's either Indianapolis or Cincinnati - both are about 110 miles away. Sometimes I'm lucky and can find a decent fare to Dayton - which cuts distance in 1/2. There's not a lot of options.

No matter what, you're going to be driving a certain distance, so to me adding a 1/2 hour or hour to save a couple hundred bucks is probably worth it...but I don't base it on airfare alone, I check out car rentals at each option too - as they can be totally different for really no reason at all.

Plus if you're on vacation there's probably other tracks racing in the region that you can piggyback another race with, or if you've never been to IMS, that's a fun way to spend a few hours while in Indy. All depends on how much time you have.

Dayton is closest but a much smaller airport than Ind, Columbus or Cincinnati.

When I was working in tranportation in the 80's DHL had their hub center there.  Their sales rep setup a tour and flew me to Dayton to watch the cargo flights come in one after another then unloading and sorting on the conveyors.  If they're still using that same hub facility the airport I was at in Dayton could handle anything.  Does DHL still use Dayton as a distribution hub?  I would think there would be passenger flights after watching a whole line of jets all come in around midnight.  Is was a nighttime tour and a pretty amazing operation for aviation and distribution nerds.
