Silly Season Announcements Come Variably at PRI Show

INDIANAPOLIS – Several driver announcements were made public during the 19th annual Performance Racing Industry Trade Show last week in Orlando, Fla.

Kasey Kahne Racing, Jason Leffler and Dynamics Inc. all made their announcements for the 2007 season, which has come on the heels of an already busy offseason.

Kahne, Mopar's factory team, will provide Brady Bacon and Kevin Swindell rides in the National Sprint and Midget Car Series divisions. In its four seasons with the USAC National Sprint Car Series, Mopar won three titles with champions including J.J. Yeley, Jay Drake and Josh Wise.

"Our three USAC drivers are what we think are the best emerging talent in the United States," Kahne said. "Kevin Swindell, Brady Bacon and Bryan Clauson should have long, successful careers after they develop their skills in USAC. Each is under contract with the elite Dodge teams in NASCAR, and I am proud that my team can play a role in developing the next generation of superstar drivers for Mopar and Dodge Motorsports."

Leffler, a three-time USAC National Midget Car Series champion and also the co-car owner of the 2006 Silver Crown Series championship winning team, introduced Damion Gardner as his driver in the National Sprint Car Series. The 2005 USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series champion owns 32 CRA feature victories, nearly twice that of any other driver, and has been a Top-3 point performer in all three of the USAC/CRA Sprint seasons.

Gardner vacated the No. 50 Ron Chaffin entry at the end of the CRA season after giving Chaffin a title in 2005. Tabbed to replace Gardner is Mike Spencer, who won three times in CRA competition in 2006 driving for Hal Engstrom.

Richard Hoffman, President of Dynamics Inc., said he would continue to field a dirt Sprint car for 2006 National Midget Car Series champion Jerry Coons Jr. in 2007. Coons won twice in feature competition for Dynamics in 2006.

But on the pavement side, Hoffman tabbed Dave Steele to pilot the No. 69 Krogers/Bounty Pringles/Tide machine. Steele has 14 National Sprint victories and has won at least one race in seven of the last nine seasons. It is the sixth straight season Steele will be in a different ride, and first ever with the Hoffman team, which heads the all-time National Sprint feature victory list.

Earlier in the week, Tony Stewart Racing announced its intentions for the National Sprint and Midget Car Series. Levi Jones, the 2005 National Sprint Car Series champion, would be retained for the 2007 season, and will move over to the No. 20 machine, vacated by 2006 champion Josh Wise. Taking Jones's place in the No. 21 is 2002 National Sprint car champion Tracy Hines, who spent five seasons on and off racing with Dynamics in the Sprints and Wilke-Pak in the Midgets.

Both cars will have the Chevrolet powerplant backing them in 2007 after a four-year stint with Mopar.

"Our goal when we formed Tony Stewart Racing was to create a grassroots motorsports program that would compete for wins and championships while promoting qualified drivers to the next level," said Stewart, the 1995 USAC "Triple Crown" champion. "We've been successful, but in order to remain successful we needed a partner committed to us and committed to motorsports. We found the perfect partner in Chevrolet."

Several other partnerships have also been announced recently. Dustin Morgan will continue to compete with Walker/Guiducci Racing in 2007, with Darren Hagen driving a second car as he did at many non-sanctioned races. Scotty Weir moves out west to drive for 2006 CRA car owner champion Glenn Crossno, who fielded the championship-winning car for CRA driver titlist Cory Kruseman. Kruseman is fielding his own car in 2007.
