I flew into Orlando last Wednesday for the 2nd annual "Sprint and Midget Classic" to race in the midget portion of the event. My good friend, Brian Sperry, went down with me to handle crew chief duties. Once we got our rental car, it was off to Smokey Bones for some BBQ ribs and chicken for dinner. When we got to the track Thursday, we were scheduled to practice twice and qualify that night. We only ended up getting on the track once before the rain came down and washed out the rest of the day's activity. We were sixth fastest on the charts, which gave us confidence going into Friday. We stopped by Olive Garden on the way to the hotel for dinner. Friday's final practice put us eighth on the charts going into qualifying. After qualifying concluded, I ended up sixth fastest and on the pole for the main event.

The stands were packed when we pushed onto the track for driver introductions. I told Brian that this was probably my biggest race of my career considering my starting position. I would get the jump on the start and lead the first 24 laps before event winner, Ron Gregory, would get by me. I finished second in the 40-lap main with Kyle Nicholas on my back bumper. Going into the weekend I had intents on getting a top-10 finish so a runner-up finish was icing on the cake. It was a great run for the team and, being in conjunction with the Performance Racing Industry trade show, every motor sports vendor was at the track watching.

The following day I headed to the Orlando Convention Center for the PRI show. I said hi to my present sponsors and talked to other companies about getting involved with our team for the upcoming 2007 season were I plan to run the full USAC National Midget schedule. It was a lot of walking trying to cover the 1,000,000 square foot show in less than eight hours. My dogs were tired, and I had to head to the airport to catch a late flight back to Indy.

I have to give a special thanks to Brian Sperry and Chett Gereke for their help this past weekend. It was only Brian and I turning the wrenches on the race car and Chett driving the truck and trailer.

See you at the races,

Chuck Gurney Jr.
