When you have a microphone you do not need to shout into it. Like you did Thursday & Friday during the dash draw. From row 20 down by turn 1 i could have heard you without a mike.

Sorry if I came across a little strong.  Believe it or not, it's VERY difficult for me to hear MYSELF on the stage in the infield, with push trucks on the track and all the pit activity (including the pit PA system in use).  Mike Roberts has a headset so that he can hear the PA broadcast while he's in the pits--I'm not down there enough to justify a wireless headset just for the dash draw.  Dave Rieff (with a headset) will be joining Mike in the pits Saturday, and he'll be conducting the dash draw.  (35 years of playing in bands/being around racing hasn't done anything to help my hearing either. . .)   ;)

Oswald - you have struck on one of my big pet peeves.  So many people yell these days - into the microphone - on TV news shows -  announcing races - even the late night show hosts yell.  Maybe it is because so many people have their radios loud in their ears or their boom boxes in their ears so much that they have indeed lost their hearing.    I have been around loud race cars all of my long life and still have good hearing.   In fact - places like the Chili Bowl - I do not use ear protection during the races but do when the announcers are on a tear.   Personally I thank you for bringing this up... not that it will make any difference, I fear.

The OP isnt really bitching and JG does a great job imo. So someone shares an opinion kindly,  humorously possibly not the way you would have, and he gets the axe. I dont think that reaction is required. Maybe JG is unaware. Maybe he will consider it, maybe not but when men had skin and backbones, ( not referring to JG, but posters and fans) it was ok to share an opinion and suggestion and everyone slept well that night.

Even though I may not know you, I
care what most of you think!

411 - Each track has it's own audio issues and idiosyncrasies that can lead to challenges achieving the right balance for the fans in the stands....making having a mic in your hands a bit disconcerting.

Personally, I prefer to sit/stand outside the tower (or with the fans if they have a good wireless or long enough extension) so I can hear the audio level/quality - and make adjustments to my audio level, or let the track announcer tweak their soundboard.

I absolutely hate being in a sound booth where you can't hear anything from outside - as I don't know if I'm blasting people or inaudible.

And I don't claim to be an announcer, but when I have to do it, I try to do what I can to find the right balance by getting out of the tower and being out in it. That seems to help me anyway.

But at big venues and events such as WoO and Knoxville, I don't think you could really do it on such a casual level; as you need a lot of info at your fingertips (like a laptop, live scoring, immediate access to scorer info).

Maybe some of this info will help from a behind-the-scenes standpoint so fans can get a better understanding of some of the challenges working with, and around, track audio parameters.

We're lucky to have such dedicated announcers in our sport, such as Johnny.  :)

For a different perspective, here's a quick video I shot from the tower with Johnny announcing - you can see there's a lot going on. :)

It's his job for people to hear him better to be a little loud than be where no one can hear him. News flash....the atmosphere at at a sprintcar race includes loud noises. What do these people who complain about loud announcers do  to handle the noise while the green flag is out?? Lol just sayin....

I have never had a problem with loud racecars in the 61 years I've been attending races. I know Johnny gets excited when he announces.  Thats a good thing. But with no racecar engines running i didnt think his announcing should hurt my ears. And i do have poor hearing and tinnitus.

JG is excitable, gotta to love the passion.

But my volume controls, at least when home works just fine.

He has the talent to knwo whent o 'broadcast' and when not to. Some of our local tracks, are silent during line-ups then start announcing after the cars have fired, which is uselesss, becasue of the noise, we can't hear them, so kuudos for what he does.

He could announce like the regular guy at Lincoln.  Doesnt get excited very quiet.  Yep at time JG can be a bit loud but its part of it.  I think he is entertaining
