Husets Speedway Thumbs Up / Thumbs Down August 2nd, 2020!

Thumbs Up:

*The Phoenix has risen!  After a 3 year lull, Husets Speedway reopened!
*My first trip there since 2016
*All Stars race had 36 real, live, 410 sprint cars (most were 410's)
*Track and facilities have been maintained and show no downside from being dormant
*20 Late model street stocks as the only other class
*Some really good racing by the LMSS. 64 Yeigh and 71Z Olivier ran a lot of laps side by side for the lead with Yeigh winning- and celebrating his 40th birthday too.
*410 feature was a good one. The last 3/4 of the race was all green flag racing. Kerry Madsen lead Cory Eliason early. Then Eliason took the lead. I think Madsen faded to 3rd at that point. Madsen came back to retake the lead. Eliason came back to retake the lead some laps later. Dominic Scelzi managed to get by Madsen toward the end for 2nd.
*Fireworks! Lots of fireworks.
*An incredible job of running the track on such short notice. I can't imagine how difficult it must be to put together a s scratch crew of something like 100 people in a hurry.
*Full moon
*They had a lot of equipment to work on the track.
*Everybody pitted outside, so the view was good of the whole track
*Paige Polyac was lightning fast in her heat race and not afraid to race in close with the guys
*They let some guy named Doug Clark flag the first heat race. I guess the guy has some ties to Husets or something. It looks like they retired the guy after that and made him drink beer and watch the races.
*My 48th year of going to car races
*No dust in then stands where I was
*No mention of what's his face, or that other racetrack name. Cool! Back to the Future it is!
*Shawn Neistad on the mic.
*The big screens for replays is pretty cool.
*I didn't get frisked at the gate.

Thumbs Down:
*Marathon- I knew it would be. Action started about 1-1/2 hours late and included 2 20 minute intermissions. One seemed to be scheduled, the other just kind of happened.
*Racing ended at 11:45. I got out of the parking lot a little after 1:00.
*Kyle Larson missed out on his attempt to make it 8 ASCoC winds in a row. In his heat race he smacked the wall on the front stretch, flattening his right rear tire. They apparently allow tire changes in heat races(?) A couple laps later, he smacked the wall in turn 1, and in turn 2 and then flipped hard, pretty much destroying the car. He was done for the night.
*Donovan Peterson flipped down the back chute as well.
*Lynton Jeffrey had some trouble getting his left front wheel torn off at speed in his heat but kept it upright and came back later.
*Craig Hanisch is either really fast, or something breaks. He wasn't really fast last night.
*The scoreboard showed times during time trails. But it only showed the top 10 or 12. So unless cars 13-36 were faster, their time didn't show.
*I didn't take as many notes as I usually do. I guess I was just happy to be there.

*This -N- That:
*I bought my ticket at the gate. I'll swear that the nice lady who sold me the ticket was the same one who sold me my first ticket there in 1984
*The A-main was by far, the loudest race I've ever been to. Wow.
*They used equipment to grind off the rubber in turns 3&4 before the feature. Interesting
*The track got funky as all the cars were at the wall in 1&2 during the feature, but bouncing off the lower berm in 3&4
*A lot of cars banged the wall during the feature races, both sprints and LMSS.
*I wonder how the citizens of Brandon like the fireworks show at midnight? Just thought > 20 minute show / 20 minute intermission
*At $5 per can, I think I watched a thousand dollars worth of beer pass by me last night.
*There were a lot of intoxicated folks in line ahead of me coming in. I wonder if they remember who won or how they got home.
*Microphones had some first night jitters.

Last night was an awesome night of racing. What did you think of it?

Really good racing!

I also waited for traffic to clear and the parking lot to empty and left about 1, home about 1:25.

You are right, doing the fireworks earlier in the night would have been prudent.

Very enjoyable night, gonna be nice to have Sunday racing next summer!

It was an amazing night.  Lot of people rolling in early to tailgate and enjoy the day/night.  The racing was as good as it gets in any track anytown America.

I am in now way unhappy or complaining, but here is what I saw that could use some.....attention:

No rear speakers (they know this) made the audio almost worthless for fans up higher than the walkway that divides the lower section from upper.

No 50-50 raffle.  Not a big deal, but they really missed out on some money here

Food/concessions.  I get that it is hard to play this guessing game, but they really missed on it.  I would have thought they had good inkling that it would be packed house and people would come hungry.  Also, it would be helpful if somebody smart could figure out a way to make more formal lines or order on the top side.  Bathrooms and lines for concession is really congested in that small area.  Not a lot can be done, but something that has a little more order would be nice.

And last.  The fans.  Holy shit you guys, this is where my only beef is.  SIT DOWN.  No, I dont mean during the last feature.  I mean during ALL the action.  You all act like you have never been to a race before.  When there is action on the track wayyyyyyyyy to many fans were moving around getting up and down from their seats.  Dislike.

Everyone has their opinion about the previous owner but when I sat down in my usual spot last night I felt like I was just there last week (including the hot shower when I got home to rinse the dust). The entire facility was truly kept in "race ready - turn key" condition for the past three years. The glitches that were had did not effect me in any way nor will detract me from returning on a weekly basis. It will only get better. Internet sucked but 9,000 phones will do that.

To be fair, the announcers did egg on everybody to get out their phones and stand up at the start of the features race- like we were at A Brittney Spears concert. (Ugg).  To me that was awkward, kind of like someone telling you that you're having so much fun.

The view is good from nearly every seat, so there's no reason to stand up.

QUICK THUMBS DOWN

way too many ""novice"' fans...the lower 1/4 of my section..my home since 1974..SECTION E...they stood the entire feature

no security directing traffic in the parking lot....or up on top of the hill....damm left turning cars at the the top of the north hill slowed things down

Did not once see any security in the stands......i sit top row of the lower section..and there were people leaning on the rail behind us..2-3 people deep...sitting in the top row, i shouldnt HAVE to ask people to move so i can GET UP from my seat..i damm sure miss the yellow line that was kept there to give a walking path....made it impossible to get to the concession lines or bathroom

way to many people moving up and down DURING the race....if the cars are on the pace lap...you, and your 5 children and baby mama DO NOT need to stands up, and try climbing up 5-6 row of stairs......same wise...DONT do it in the middle of the race either

THUMBS UP...............SUNDAY NIGHT AT HUSETS....5 generations of my family have sat there together......WE AS RACE FANS WERE BACK...................HOME

They did a very good job considering they just had a short period of time from purchase of track and first race.  Hope WOO also have a big fan turnout.  Track knows what it has to do to make things a little smoother, but things went well considering large crowd and short period of time to get things together.

Races were good. We decided to get there early from our hotel down the road. Nice to have 2 with in a 5 min? drive. We stayed at the quality in, but should of stayed at the Holiday Inn. Maybe I would of seen Chingy.

We left for the track about 5. After hitting traffic I thought we were in trouble, especially after seeing the sea of cars. I knew getting out wouldn't be fun but walked the pits for an hour. People's patience seems to be short these days, especially after the races, after a few beers.

We ended up sitting on the north end, which seemed to have huge steps. I'm surpised no one fell down after having a couple beers.

Concessions were a bit steep in my opinion. $10 for a hamburger, ( think I got a double), and $10 for nachos, but none the less, falls in line with what we see at sporting events.

Knoxville's concessions is still better, and cheaper. :D

The restrooms seemed to move pretty quickly. I wish there wasn't one door in and one door out.

The track is incredible. I wish we had a bullring in southern Iowa like that. Racing was good. Too bad Larson slapped the wall.

I'll be back for sure.

Thank you Tod!!!!

This is what I also meant when I said way too many people standing up.  NOT during the racing action when everyone decided to be excited and stand.  But like you said, during action when most were sitting down the people getting up and down and moving around.  If you go to bathroom or concession,  wait until there is a break in the action to scurry back to your seat.  If no break, then stand in the back and wait until race is over.

Sunday night Shawn, the announcer was talking about the length of Husets Speedway. In days gone by, they used to advertize Husets as being the fastest 3/8 mile track in the upper midwest, or some such thing. Considering that the track record is under 11 seconds, that does sound pretty fast.

Measuring on Google maps shows this: If you were driving up at the wall like Corey Eliason, you were on a high-banked track just under 3/10ths of a mike. If you were banging the inside berm like Kerry Madsen, you were on a 1/4 mile flat track.

I didn't think you were the kind of guy who knew what it is like to be at a Britney Spears concert.

Also, nobody was encouraged to stand during a race, just the 4-wide salute (and the first hot laps session for street stocks, which was really cool, in my opinion).

Well......some ultra-liberal Facebook page posted a photo of the Huset's stands from Sunday night and claimed that it was of "125,000 bikers at a car rally near Sturgis" and how bad/selfish/irresponsible that they were because everybody in the country is now going to get the China Virus.

Huset's/Quiring/All Stars pissed off the liberals....So two thumbs up!

You're right on both accounts. The last big concert I went to was probably before she was born. The guys in front of me all stood up at the drop of the green for both features. I'v learned to tap a guy on the shoulder and ask "Hey buddy? Who's in the lead? I can't see the cars."

Glad to hear you on the mic again, even if first night gremlins had their way with the sound system occassionaly. I especially liked the camera remote from the track. I couldn't make out who that guy on the track was. He did have a cool hat.
