OK, a thread where we don't need to discuss this damn virus!    Big O Speedway in Ennis, TX (formerly 85 Speedway) is running tonight.    They are running non wing sprints.   Here is something right off their web page.   Anyone see why I won't be going?

QUARANTINE NATIONALS! PLEASE SHARE: We are racing this Saturday, May 2! Bound to have a class below you love with 8 classes racing! NON WING SPRINT CARS, SUPER LATE MODELS, LIMITED MODIFIEDS, THUNDER CARS, MOD LITES, ECO LIMITED MODIFIED, FACTORY STOCKS, AND HORNETS!

Surely we must have at least one class you can love since we're running eight of them.   Surely they do, but I sure don't have any intention of sitting through any of the others.   At least not with that many of them I won't.   Welcome to racing in Texas folks.   You folks in Knoxille and other places that run sprints only don't know how good you have it.

I'd say any track only running three or four classes has it good.  Such a misstep to run so many classes.  Give me a track that can do a 3.5 hour show any day of the week.  And they are few and far between.

Absolutely!   Devils Bowl only runs four classes, which I can live with.   At many of their ASCS shows it's only three depending on the night.   It's the only track of the six or more in North Texas that operates that way.

Darn,  I think 3 classes is to many at times. On a trip through the midwest I noticed many tracks had 4 , 5 or 6 classes but some of those classes had 15 or less cars which made watching them a little less painful. I did see some decent limited late model and modified racing on those bullrings.

411 - in the Sprint Car Bandits contract that I give to all the tracks, and it's been this way for 5 years now, it's right in it that the SCB runs 2nd feature out at every single event - unless track conditions warrant us to run earlier.

For example, at https://mmsdirt.com/ next Saturday, we're running 1st or 2nd feature out and there are 4 divisions racing including us.  :)

That is quite awesome Darin.   I hope to take in a few SCB shows this year.

A number of years ago, we had a track that ran 2 open wheel classes--sprints and mods--with about 30-35 cars in each.  Best racing ever, I can remember A features in the mods where they would run the whole race under green and only have a car or two get lapped.  Also, it was so competetive that only a couple cars would win more than 1 feature the whole season.  Sprints were equally competetive.  Two great classes, little downtime, out early, what more could you ask for.

Then the track sold and classes were added until the program took 5+ hours to run.  I refer to this as "the day the music died".  My wife lost interest and quit going.  I went by myself for a while but pretty much lost interest myself.  I always said I would rather pay $20 to get in to a program that runs 2 or 3 competitive classs and takes under 3 hours to run than to get in for free to a car-fest that takes 5 to 6 hours to run.

Bottom line, marathon programs pretty much ruined racing for me.  You know, it wouldn't have been so bad if they ran the premier classes first, but waiting until after midnight to see the race you came for was too much.  Now I pretty much attend specials only.

Ok, but how many cars in the other divisions?

Going to a show with 10-ish cars per class is much different than going to one with with higher car counts, especially in the lower classes.

I get why some think sprint car fans are snobbs. Everyone has the right to race in whatever class they want. Guys/gals in those other classes have crews/family/fans that enjoy participating in the sport just like sprint teams do.

Be glad you have an opportunity to go to a race right now.

8 is pretty heavy. I actually don't mind a few support classes. If it's has wheels, a combustion engine, and can race I'll probably watch it. Die hard here. Going to a race with five classes of mods, stocks, and four cylinders tonight because I love racing. Not even any sprints. But I will say an all open wheel show is levels above anything with fenders. I can still love both but sprints are where it's at.

My perfect card? Midgets, 410 wingless, and 410 winged on a high bank small 3/8s. Four crown at Eldora is practically this and is on the bucket list for sure. I did the "let's race two" a few years ago and that was awesome.

Not totally opposed to support classes, my main gripe is the number of them.   Down here it depends on which support class you're talking about as far as car counts.   Some of them only have 7 or 8, others have 20 or more.   It also depends on the time of year too, because as the summer goes on the counts dwindle.  I may be a sprint car snob, but unlike my younger years I'm just not willing to sit there forever waiting on my favorite class.    And I'm certainly not sitting through IMCA mods, sportmods, stocks, hobby stocks, plus street stocks, factory stocks, and jr. mini stocks to see an ASCS regional show.

That is the reason that I prefer special events that only have two or three classes.  Weekly shows with six or seven classes can be a bit of an ordeal.

Could you imagine if a college or NBA basketball game had a scheduled start time of 7:00 pm but sometimes they were running behind and started a 15 minutes late, a half hour, or maybe an hour late? Then instead of lasting 2 1/2 to 3 hours the games would sometimes just be 4-5 hours long? lol

Race fans have every right to b-tch, moan and complain and should always be allowed to bring in their own drinks into the races just to be able to self medicate.

In years past, I spent many weekends sufferning through a hot Texas summer night watching 7 or 8 support classes.   I agree that it is insane.    One thing that a promoter needs to understand is the type of classes matter.   Any time I heare the word Junor,  I am out.   Anytime,  I hear the word senior, I am out.   Every track needs an entrly level class, but dont give me bombers and Hornets (tront wheel cars)   give me one or the other.  Actually, give me bombers every time, I hate front wheel classes.   Please dont send 3 classes out that look exactly the same.  When running Mods, I don't need A mods, B mods and E mods.   The same can be said about fender classes dont need  Super stock, street stock, Factory stock, bombers.   Pick two classes and be done.   Finally,  I would like to have a top division.   Winged sprints, non wing sprints,  midgets, late models.   Dont care, but give me a class that is all about the speed.

Yeah and then you would have to sit through 5 undercard games of high school JV, high school boys varsity, high school girls varsity, men's college, women's college before the NBA game you came to see. lol

What happend to racing is what happened to society. Promoters got super lazy.

It's easier to sell $35 pit passes to hobby stock drivers racing for peanuts then it is to actually put effort into putting a good product on the track and filling the grandstands.

This started at Boone in the 1990s and unfortunately this cancer has spread to racetracks throughout the country.

Its basically killing short track racing as nobody wants to sit at a race for 5 hours watching classes of crap they could care less about.

I've been watching the racing from Boyd's since about 4:30 when hot laps started.  Four classes.  And it's about two too many.

And the Pee-Wees, and The junior Pee-Wees and the Big-Wheels,  and you'd have to sit through a 45 minute intermission while they stripped and rewaxed the floor.

I have started to stay away from events/tracks that are more focused on backgate than front gate. We all have our preferences on what classes & in what order we like them. I personally really cannot stand any form of modified, compact, or street stock class. I will go to a race/event that features them if I feel the sprint car field will be good but if there are 4 classes & 2 of them are some form of modified, I typically save my money for a better show. Usually the track is worn out anyway at those shows & it takes rubber or it is one lane racing. As one crew chief told me one night after a race with 5 classes, "the owner is so worried about his backgate he's going to lose his front gate before too long."

Turned on the Boyds Speedway fender show at 10:30  it finished about 45 minutes later. Thats almost 7 hours of racing, some people were getting their dollars worth.lol.  I have a local track near me that ran a 6 hour marathon for 2 divisions of cars. about 50-55 cars.

Exactly, that's an awesome way of putting it.   That's another way of saying what I've said about racing in North Texas, it started going downhill when IMCA moved in during the 90s
