SECOND AT CANYON BIRTHDAY BASH, ROA EXTENDS SOUTHWEST SERIES LEAD!
(Cypress, CA, June 13, 2019) Brody Roa came home second in the 30-lap main event at last Saturday’s “Canyon Speedway Park Birthday Bash” in Peoria, Arizona. The finish allowed him to extend his advantage to 58-points in the USAC Southwest Series championship point standings.
Fresh off a second-place result at the Arizona Speedway the week before, Roa, award-winning crew chief Zac Bozanich and the remainder of the B.R. Performance team trekked across the desert for the second consecutive week. They were eyeing another top finish, an extension of their lead in the standings and a two-week break in their busy racing schedule.
Prior to the main event, “The Pride of Garden Grove” qualified 10th fastest in the 15-car field with a lap of 16.257. He then won his heat race and booked a ticket to start on the pole for the main.
When the green flag waved to start the main, Roa rushed into the lead. By the end of the first trip around the Arizona dirt oval, he had pulled away to an eight-car-length advantage. The second-place car closed in on the third lap and hung close for a handful of tours before Roa stretched the lead to a half straightaway.
The green #91R was on a rail and dominated the middle part of the race. Roa maintained his big lead and the win looked to be his for the taking. The 28-year-old held the top spot for the first 26-laps until he momentarily got caught up in traffic. The loss of momentum allowed the second-place car to not only close in but steal the lead on lap 27. Roa chased him over the last two circuits, but he was forced to settle for a second-place finish.
“We kind of lost the handle on it a little bit and got hung up in traffic,” Roa told the crowd when interviewed after the race. “He (eventual winner Mike Martin) got by us, got by those lapped cars and drove away. Congratulations to those guys. I wish we would have been one spot better, but we will take it (second) and go back home.”
The race was Roa’s 15th in a sprint car this year. To date, he has four wins, four runner-up spots, three third-place finishes, one fourth and one fifth. Only three times has he finished out of the top five and two of those he ended up sixth. The other finish, a 14th, came after a crash in a main event.
Roa and the team get the next couple weeks away from the track before returning to action in the USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series at Perris Auto Speedway on June 29th. He goes into that race 12-points out of the lead in the USAC/CRA standings.
