It happened in late June, and it happened last night. Men, who strap into alcohol burning, fire breathing rocket ships and take one last pull on the belts,  get pushed off to start, leaving loved ones on roofs of haulers, buses, sitting  amongst us regular fans in the stands, race to the green, all the while, dodging dirt clods, right rears, left fronts, rutty, rough, dry slick, and a poor handling car, take the white for one more turn and take the winning checkered with ice in their veins, lose their life doing what they know may be their last, race their sprint car entertaining other people for outright enjoyment. It is so hard to accept the news when you first read or hear about it, but we know, as fans of these brave men and women, that death happens. It does not make it easier. I witnessed a life ending crash this year, and said “this sucked” and am sure I then thought better thoughts for the families of the drivers and others involved and also wished safety to each and every driver out there, entertaining fans and friends and family members, a safe year the rest of this year, and next year and beyond. I will never feel the blood rushing extreme rush it has to take to pilot a winged sprint Car, so in that knowledge I pull a thank you from the bottom of my heart for risking your life for my selfless enjoyment.  You are all my heroes. Rest In Peace Jason Johnson and Rest In Peace Greg Hodnett.

This one needs to stay at the top.

I am absolutely all for improving safety. But no matter where you put or don't put a pit entrance or exit, a billboard, a bridge, a rut, ..... racing is and will always be inherently life threatening dangerous. Whether it's a 30 mph cart, a 60 mph hobby stock, a 100+ mph Sprint Car, or a 200 MPH Indy car or stock car.

Fortunately most defy that inherent danger but when they don't it hits so hard that we want to change the world.

Rip and codolences to his family and friends and fans. One of the best drivers plus much more. Racing will never be safe and safety has came along way since before cages and when some of the first heros ran with a rope for a seat belt wearing a t-shirt. Wings Hans device,, self containment seats and people like Earl Simpson that championed the cause for safety and have saved many lives. it can happen anywhere even tracks like Knoxville where safety and also their safety crew are excellent. Part failure can happen and that seems to have started this sad ending.I hope many tracks will address some of the hazards that could result in driver injury. Nascar and Indy cars and NHRA are contiually  tring to improve safety but have all lost high profile due to crashes. As a driver or owner or fan we seem to think it cant happen to us but in reality we all know it can even just driving to the races or crossing the street.

I have been a fan of racing as long as I can remembe rand can truly say  have only had one favorite driver ,but have enjoyed watching many others I am so glad Greg came to Pa. and called it home and represented us all over the country.

My one time favorite driver Mitch Smith retired suddenly after hearing of the death of Toby Tobias, Greg Wilson said last night he wondered if he should keep doing it but like Toby, Jason ,BC Jason Leffler,Billy Kimmel,Joe Whitcomb, KramerLThe, Gman and many others they went home doing what they loved.
