TOUGH NIGHT FOR SEXTON/GATLIN RACING – BACK IN ACTION AT BAKERSFIELD SPEEDWAY JUNE 16!
(Lakeside, CA, June 1, 2018) After a great start for Sexton/Gatlin Racing Team drivers Brent, Dalton and Grant Sexton, at the “70th Anniversary Salute to Indy” at Perris Auto Speedway last Saturday night, things got rough for the trio when none of them finished the 20-lap main event.
To start the night off in front of the big crowd, Brent was third fastest in qualifying in the 21-car field with a lap of 17.919 on the famous Riverside County half-mile clay oval. Dalton, the eldest of Brent’s sons, timed in fifth fast at 18.060 and his sibling Grant was 17th with a lap of 18.967.
Like qualifying, the heat races were good for the trio as well. They won two of the three six lappers. Grant took top honors and Dalton was fifth in the second heat. In the next heat, father Brent duplicated Grant’s feat when he dominated the competition for the win.
Brent, who came into the main event second in the championship standings, was starting in the sixth spot. Grant was coming from the outside of the sixth row in 12th and Dalton was starting 13th. From their respective performances through the preliminaries, things were looking good, but that was about to change.
Officials called off the first two attempts to start the race due to jumped starts at the front of the pack. Unfortunately, the third try saw a multi-car crash take place in turn one and Grant was caught up in it. The driver was uninjured, but the car was not and Grant was done for the night with a frustrating 16th place finish.
Once the race restarted, Brent steered his shiny orange and blue #44 up to second place. Many eyes in the grandstands were on him and many were on Dalton as well as the teenager was slicing his way to the front. In fact, he moved all the way from 13th to fifth when his car went up in smoke on lap 13 and he was saddled with a 12th place finish.
That only left Brent on the track for Sexton/Gatlin. He was running a strong second, but three laps after Dalton dropped out, Brent coasted silently to the pits with a broken racecar as well and a 12th place finish.
The team will be ready to go and battle again at the next CLS race which is at the Bakersfield Speedway on June 16th. Going into that event, Brent is still second in the championship standings. Dalton, who is now 10th in the standings, leads 11th place Grant by a mere three points in the “Rookie of the Year” chase.
