BRENT SEXTON SECOND IN CALIFORNIA LIGHTNING SPRINT CAR RACE AT VENTURA!

(Lakeside, CA, May 11, 2018) Two-time California Lightning Sprint Car Series champion Brent Sexton continued his early season prowess when he placed second in the 25-lap main event last Saturday night at the Ventura Raceway.  In addition, his two teenage sons and teammates on the Sexton/Gatlin Racing Team, Dalton and Grant, continued with their impressive rookie seasons placing 10th and 12th in the same race.

Brent fired the first salvo for the Sexton/Gatlin trio when he qualified sixth in the 22-car field.  Dalton clocked in 12th fastest while, Grant ended up 21st due to some qualifying issues.  Grant was the first of the three to race on the night and he finished fourth in his heat race.  Brent and Dalton squared off in the third heat race with Brent taking third and Dalton sixth.

On a track that was proving tough to pass on, Brent who celebrated his birthday four days after the race, started fourth in the main event.  Grant began in 11th and Dalton came from 18th.  By the end of the first lap Brent advanced all the way to second and he stayed there the entire race constantly challenging the race’s eventual winner.  When the checkered ended the race, Brent was within a car length of the victor.

Dalton passed eight cars in the main to finish 10th and Grant was two spots behind in 12th.  Dalton’s passing ability earned him the race “Hard Charger Award.”  That was the third time in three races that the brothers ended up with the “Hard Charger.”

Coming away from Ventura, Brent, who was the series champion in 1999 and 2008, jumped up to third in the point standings and only trails the leader by 15-points.  Grant is 11th in the standings and that is tops among the rookies.  Older sibling Dalton is 14th in the series standings and second to his brother in the “Rookie of the Year” race.

On Friday May 11th, Sexton/Gatlin Racing was a guest on a special tv segment on KUSI in San Diego.

The USAC/California Lightening Sprint Car Series takes this weekend off before returning to the place where it all began, the Barona Speedway, for the Jim Squire Memorial on May 19th.
