BRENT SEXTON 5TH AND GRANT SEXTON 7TH AT VENTURA -  BAKERSFIELD THIS WEEK!

(Lakeside, CA, April 19, 2018) Veteran Brent Sexton finished fifth and his son Grant finished seventh when the California Lightning Sprint Car Series opened its 25th season last Saturday night at the Ventura Raceway.  This week Brent, Grant and Dalton Sexton will be competing when the CLS makes a stop at the Bakersfield Speedway.

The Ventura track, which is located within a few hundred feet of the Pacific Ocean, yielded good results from start to finish for Brent and Grant.  However, the same cannot be said for Grant’s sibling Dalton.  The teen, who was making his Ventura debut, had wiring and engine problems forcing him to scratch for the night.

Twenty-four cars were on hand for the night of dirt track racing.  Brent timed in fifth in qualifying with a lap of 12.723.  Grant, who was also racing at Ventura for the first time, surprised everyone when he stopped the clocks at an impressive 12.945.  That was good enough for 10th best on the night.  In their respective heat races, Brent started fifth and ended up fourth while Grant crossed under the checkered flag in fifth after starting seventh.  That fifth-place finish forced Grant into the B-main event, but another fifth-place finish there saw him transfer to the 30-lap feature.

For Brent, the main event was interesting to say the least.  The two-time series champion was running in seventh on lap seven when he tried to go to the inside of the sixth-place car.  Slight contact was made and Brent’s car tipped over onto its left side.  About 99% of the time, his car would have continued flipping to the left.  However, in a peculiar reaction, the car rebounded to its right and ended up on all four wheels.  The yellow flag came out and Brent drove away.

As he caused the yellow Brent had to restart at the back.  Over the final 23-laps, he impressively weaved his way through the field and finished fifth.

For Grant, his first appearance at the famous Ventura oval may have overshadowed his father’s performance.  Starting 17th the rookie moved forward throughout the event and was hooked up on the outside.  Amazingly for a first timer, he passed 10 cars, finished seventh and earned the main event “Hard Charger Award” and the extra $50.00 that went with it.

The entire Sexton/Gatlin Racing Team will be back at it this Saturday at the Bakersfield Speedway.  Gates will open at 4:00 P.M. with racing at 6:00.  Bakersfield Speedway is located at 5001 North Chester Ext, in Bakersfield (93308).  The track phone number is (661) 393-7085 and the website is available at the following link http://www.bakersfieldspeedway.com/
