BRODY ROA CLOSES SEASON WITH A FIFTH PLACE FINISH AT THE TURKEY NIGHT GRAND PRIX!
(Buena Park, CA, November 29, 2017) Brody Roa closed out a successful 2017 season with a fifth-place finish in the USAC West Coast Sprint Cars 77th annual “Turkey Night Grand Prix” at the Ventura Raceway on Thanksgiving Night.
After a rough outing at the 2016 edition of the annual Thanksgiving race at the tiny dirt track on the Ventura County Fairgrounds, Roa was determined to make a better showing in 2017. With some much-appreciated help from sponsor HD Industries, the #91R team arrived at the track with high hopes. Those hopes were buoyed when the 26-year-old qualified seventh fastest in the 49-car field on the first night. He followed that up with a second-place finish in his heat race to earn his spot in the main event.
Starting on the outside of the front row for the main, hope was soaring in the pits. However, those hopes did not last long. In the first corner, another car shoved Roa wide and nearly put him into the Pacific Ocean. By the time he recovered and got back on the throttle, he was fifth. At the end of the first lap he was back on the low line and battling for third when contact with another car sent him into the air and bouncing around the track in turn one. It was clear that as soon as the yellow flag came out Roa was done for the night and had a disappointing 20th place finish.
Back in the pits, the crew assessed the damage and began repairs for the finals 24-hours later. As Roa’s father Brett put it the next day when asked what was damaged, he quipped, “Only the expensive parts.”
Thanksgiving Day dawned beautiful on the track that is only a stone’s throw away from the Pacific Ocean. While the surf looked great, Roa and the B.R. Performance team were busy rebuilding the bent and bruised race car finishing just before the start of the show.
Unfortunately, due to the crash the night before, Roa would have to start the night off in one of the B mains and would need a good finish to get into the A main. Fortunately, the good qualifying effort the night before found the Garden Grove, California based racer starting on the outside of the second row. Roa parlayed that starting spot in the B main into a win and into his final sprint car race of the year, the prestigious “Turkey Night Grand Prix” A main event.
Starting in 11th spot for the 30-lap main, Roa began moving forward at the drop of the green flag. By the end of the 7th circuit, he had passed five cars and was up to sixth. Ten laps later, he had advanced his way up to fourth. Over the last eight laps, the tall racer became involved in a tremendous battle for fourth that saw him slide back and forth a couple of times before coming home fifth to close the 2017 season.
While the successful 2017 campaign is behind Roa and the #91R team, work is already underway for a championship challenge in 2018. The cars are in the shop and are already stripped down for the meticulous and precise maintenance they hope will propel them to the top. Long hours throughout the winter in the shop are on tap for the next few months as they get ready for the early March season opener.
