VINTAGE SPRINT CARS, LEGEND CARS WILL HIGHLIGHT ROUND TWO OF ORANGE SHOW SPEEDWAY WINTER SERIES
DECEMBER 13, 2006 ---Vintage open-wheel race cars will join vintage replica stock cars to provide the racing activity for round two of the Winter Series at Orange Show Speedway Sunday afternoon.
The Western Racing Association (WRA), which calls itself a “museum on wheels,” will bring its Midgets, Sprint cars and Roadsters to the quarter-mile paved oval. These are the cars that raced in the 1940s and ‘50s, without roll cages and on narrow tires, and they’ll provide an interesting contrast to the more familiar classes that share the program – Stock Cars USA, Legend Cars, Bandoleros and Mini StocKars.
The Legend Cars and Mini StocKars are replicas of American production automobiles like the 1934 Ford Coupe and ’37 Chevrolet Sedan and the Bandoleros, powered by 30 horsepower Briggs & Stratton engines, are a stepping stone from karts to full-sized race cars and a training ground for young drivers.
Spectator gates will open at noon and the first race is scheduled for 1 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors (62 and up), military personnel and juniors (13-16), and $2 for children (6-12). Parking is free, with entry through Gate 1 off E Street or Gate 7 off Arrowhead Avenue.
WRA race director Tony Simon, of Alta Loma, said the cars eligible for the exhibition series must have been manufactured in 1970 or earlier, and most are around 50 years old. As an example, the car he’ll be driving is a 1948 Kurtis Kraft Midget powered by the venerable four-cylinder Offenhauser engine.
Simon said the field usually is split at WRA events, with Sprint Cars forming a separate class.
This will be the second of four Winter Series appearances for the Stock Cars USA series. They concluded their regular touring season in the Winter Series opener Dec. 3, with John Mattie, of Highland, and Brian Malone, of Grand Terrace, winning the twin 25-lap main events and Harry Michaelian Jr., of El Camino Village, winning the championship.
No point standings are kept for the Winter Series, which will conclude with races Jan. 7 and Jan. 28, 2007.
