I'm surprised nothing has been mentioned here about Mansfield being turned back to dirt by Cody Sommer.

With a fairly aggressive schedule. Several $5K to win non wing shows and a $15K to win FAST show along with FAST 305's & BOSS August 11 & 12.

August 12th

410 winged sprints: 15k to win

Boss NW sprints: 5k to win

305 sprints: 3k to win

This is interesting.

Wow, that is great news! Really look forward to checking the track out. For those that have been there before (dirt or asphalt), is it a true half? What is the baking like? From the picture, it looks like it could be like Eldora in design.

Also, when tracks go from one surface to another (asphalt to dirt here), will the dirt just be put on top of the existing asphalt, or do you think they will tear-up the asphalt first?

Thanks for posting this - can't wait!

Smart thing would be to tear up asphalt first, but that's also quite costly to do and haul.  But without a dirt to dirt type "adhesion" they'll fight issues for years, especially with freezing and thawing cycles.  The clay will tend to come up in chunks. But someone with more knwoledge may know different.

Sommer was behind the Gateway Dirt Nationals in the dome in St Louis this past December. He seems to have big ideas and isn't afraid to go out on a limb sorta like Earl who promoted Mansfield back in its dirt days. Eldora will always be Eldora but things in Ohio have gotten a little stale lately. It'll be interesting to see if this shakes things up.

Sharon Speedway used to have asphault under the half mile and the drainage sucked on it, that was a big draw back of keeping the asphault.

I'm interested to know what the surface will be like myself.

Oh, forgot about that.  Good point, another reason why dirt on top of asphalt is typically not good (I'm not talking about one-off events of course, I'm talking about with some sort of permanence).

Think I read Sharon got new clay this winter? Did I see correctly?  If so, much needed.  Less rocks;)

141 Speedway in WI and Ocala Speedway in FL are two tracks that I know were pavement and they put the dirt on top. Seems too work good at both those locations. Imagine like anything it takes time and finesse to get a track right but you gotta start with right dirt/clay.

Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City is also sitting on an old asphalt track.  Staggerman said it right - takes time...and a person who knows how to prepare it and you better be able to figure out the drainage.

At one time Fulton NY was dirt on top of asphalt, not sure if it is still that way but kind of positive it still is.  I have seen two ESS shows there the past two years during their speedweek's and both shows were excellent.  I saw a USAC sprint and midget show at Mansfield when it was paved and it look like it was going to be a good show but it was rained out before all of the heats were run.  I got my dates messed up with the rain date and when I went back out I saw a "more or less street stock event."  I will absolutly go out for at least one of the non-wing sprint deals.  Anywhere in Ohio is closer to Philadelphia than Indiana, and I need my non-wing racing!  I can see wing sprint cars back here in PA, NJ, NY, and DE.  By the way I am heading to Ocala, FL for USAC sprints in Feb., great Christmas present from the wife.

The current paved track is 8 degrees in the straights. It has 3 levels of banking in the turns. The top is 16 degrees. My guess is that the bottom is 10 degrees, and the middle is 13 degrees. The track was a 3/8 until the late 70's. It was lengthened around 1978 if my memory serves me right. I had been going there since 1976, but I was very young and could be wrong about the year that it was lengthened. It was paved sometime in the early to mid 90's. If I had to guess, they will put dirt over the currently paved surface. I would expect them to lose a few degrees of banking while doing this, but it should be a fairly fast surface if it's prepared correctly. The current track also has safer barriers in the turns, and I hope that they try to keep those intact.

It says in the press release the track will be the only dirt track to utilize safer barriers and  dirt will be put over the existing asphalt.

I am happy.  Ohio is home to the best DIRT tracks in the country,  There is NO negitive to having Atomic, Attica, ElDaora, Fremont, Wooster and  now Mansfield in the same state.  Make sure you go to one of these tracks EVERY weekend.

Yet Portsmouth is the best!   A actual tacky Eldora.  Should have seen the BOSS Sprint show there last year,  The fans went nuts when the announcer said,  DID YA LIKE THAT?

The LM show was good too that night. had about 150 cars in four divisions and track never took a bit of rubber and was super fast on a 98* day.

Hope  they  put down a lot of dirt  , I am not an expert by any means but I hope they get it right and not have any bad surfaces like they had at Oswego for DIRTCAR MODIFIED RACES in October .Also  MR CHANCE you left out Sharon Speedway in your listing of tracks  to visit when they have sprint car races there .Sharon is a great facility wouldn't you say !!!!

Isn't August 12 Nationals weekend?  How many quality 410s will they get for this?

I think only 2 Northern OH teams made the trip to Knoxville that I can remember (D Jacobs and Byron Reed). So I think they'll be more than fine.
