Ties have nothing to do with the "overtime".  A few years ago, NASCAR made the decision the fans wanted to have the race end with the cars racing and not end under caution.

don't overlook the wink

Me thinks NASCAR's decisions "for the fans" have not gone so well.

Just give us the racing - no "overtime", no play-offs/chase, no car of tomorrow, no spec car/engine, ........

I haven't watched a race in years. And, from what I'm hearing/reading, I may never watch another.

Update on NASCAR's page says he is awake now and talking to doctors and family.   That's great news!

Egras - "how dumb are we for tuning in to a race....". I agree with what you said. However.....

The bottom line for NASCAR is the mighty dollar. When was the last time you heard any NASCAR announcer say that a race was sold out? The 500 was, and I believe I saw the TV ratings were way up (at least for Sunday).

Sorry friends - I don't think anything is going to change. NASCAR will start pounding their chest (probably in a day or two when we know more about Newman's condition) about how safe the cars and tracks are and probably is still counting their $ from Speeweeks.

Who else went to bed last night with a sick feeling in their stomach and slept like shit because they were checking their phone every five minutes hoping for good news?

You are correct.  And yet, every year I sit down to watch this race and shake my head at how dumb I am for sitting here watching this race!!  ;)

I was feeling sick about that wreck as soon as I saw the replay.  A car into the fence, rolling down the front stretch is one thing.  When they take a direct door impact upside down, that made my knees buckle.  I still don't feel good about what we're gonna hear.

I couldn't have said it any better than you did right there other than I do watch the races still when on tv. I won't seek it out but if it's Sunday and it's in heck yes I'll watch race cars go in circles! I don't care what it is as long as it has wheels and a combustion engine.

As a racing fan I HATE overtime, playoffs, chase, car of tonorrow, and spec engines!

They sold out because they got rid of 1/3 of their seats. And I gotta give it to em because now they can say they have sell out crowds at the "Great American Race". Another doop but some people fall for it. They are DESPERATE for fans and likeability. NASCAR has been a circus with a bunch of pansy drivers (excluding the dirt guys) since 2001.

Update per Ryan Newman's dad which has been published by multiple sources: Ryan is sitting up and awake and alert. Bleeding is in front of head but contrllable, bruising on top and left side of head pretty badly, hasnt attempted to walk yet but doctors dont think he will have an issue. Remaining in ICU for now.

The most recent report on Ryan is that he's communicating and sitting up so that is good news.   His father shared something about sitting up but not attempting to walk yet.  This information answers the questions people might be thinking but hesitate to ask.  I saw something about an extra bar on the roll cage that Ryan lobbied for in 2009 that is called the "Newman bar" due to his advocating the change.  The article pointed out that this bar was a big factor in the outcome so that is an interesting coincidence.

Anyways, this has been a stressful couple of days for every racing fan and everyone is thankful for all the positive news.  We can go back debating important issues such as wing vs non wing and Posse vs the world now.  ;)

Now that Ryan has been released from the hospital.  NASCAR must ban "bump drafting" and blocking.  For those who watch, the majority of the major crashes are the result of these two insane practices.  Ryan Newman is on par with the late Alan Kulwicki regarding intelligence and education.  Ryan has entertained us for years in USAC and NASCAR.  His intelligence and engineering degree would allow him to be an excellent anaylast and technical specialist for races.

It might be a while before NASCAR medical staff clears Ryan to drive.  They're strict about head injuries as they can have lingering affects on vision, depth perception and balance.  Dale Jr. as everyone who watches NASCAR knows retired due to concussions and concerns over CTE.  A brain bleed is much more serious than a concussin and the time and extent of recovery can vary based on my personal experience with a family member.

To see him walk out of the hospital two days after the accident is awesome.

Very well said..There is no hurry to come back, just make sure all is healed and no relapses..A bleed is serious and could burst at any time..Time is of NO essence here..Life in whole is more important..

I don't disagree with your logic, but banning bump drafting will be impossible.  Cars trying not to bump will be checking up and we know how that will go 15 cars deep.

How about making the front end of the super-speedway cars out of thin sheet metal with no bracing and the rear bumpers out of 1/2" thick braced steel.  That will end the issue when they are all driving around with snow plows in front

Hopefully he takes all the time in the world. As someone who has suffered multiple concussions, two to the frontal lobe, one being pretty bad, I can say do not rush recovery. Your patience & tolerances (at least for me) can go down to nothing on some days for no reason. You have times that you feel overwhelmed & the simplest tasks can seem like calculus. At times I would forget things that I was just thinking about 10secs ago. To make matters worst, there were days that you think you are getting better then you feel you go backwards.

Took me about 8months to feel "normal" again and it seemed like 8 years. Hopefully Ryan just takes his time & listens to the doctors. Glad he was able to walk out of the hospital as it could have been so much worst. Still hoping & routing for him in his recovery and hope he just takes each day 1 at a time

NASCAR isn't like dirt track racing where drivers have been known to leave the hospital against doctor's orders and sign in the same day at a dirt track under a false name so they can race.  NASCAR has a medical staff and Newman will have to pass a physical before he can get back in the driver's seat.  They monitor head injuries closely and have addressed the issue of CTE that was brought to the publics attention by former NFL players.

It's the best possible outcome to see Ryan Newman walk out of the hospital with his kids in tow and I'm hoping that he recovers fully and gets back racing.  He spent some time driving Sprints so even though he doesn't get the attention these younger drivers are getting we can still claim him as one of our own.
