I've travelled accross the line hundreds of time over the years. I have experienced mostly positves on both sides of the border. I was basically accused of being a drug dealer by one U.S customs officer, because according to him, I fit the stereotype. Earring, hairstyle, type of vehicle I drove etc. Needless to say he was wrong. Have had some very minor damage done on my car by both Canadian and U.S customs officers, who got a little carried away with their inspections. They were very appologetic and I was later reimbursed a few bucks. This is basically how it works. If you are travelling to another country expect to be asked about you history in regards to criminal records, citizenship, where you are employed, your purpose for entering the country, what you're bringing accross the line with you in terms of alcohol, cigs etc... When returning to you home country they are pretty much looking for things they can collect duty and taxes on. I have to say since 9/11 things have gotten more strict. Remember they are just doing their jobs and trying to keep the bad guys out. Just answer the questions you are asked briefly and directly.

- Beginning January 23, 2007, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling by air between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda will be required to present a valid passport, Air NEXUS card, or U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Document.
- As early as January 1, 2008, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda by land or sea (including ferries), may be required to present a valid passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security. While recent legislative changes permit a later deadline, the Departments of State and Homeland Security are working to meet all requirements as soon as possible. Ample advance notice will be provided to enable the public to obtain passports or passport cards for land/sea entries.

It sounds like we have been less worried about the North border than the South.

I stand corrected!
I took a closer look at that email today and it said 2008, not 2007. Sorry about that, if I didn't jump to conclusions I wouldn't get any excercise at all.
