Badlands Motor Speedway Suspends Racing

Posted: May 18, 2017 | By: Badlands Motor Speedway

On Saturday, May 13, 2017 Badlands Motor Speedway held its annual Silver Shootout race, and we would like to thank the thousands of fans who enjoyed perfect weather and a great night of racing.

On Tuesday, May 16th, 2017 BMS made a necessary business decision to discontinue the services provided by the Med Star Dirt Track Rescue Team. Along with the discontinuance notice, we enclosed a check to pay them their fees for the entire 2017 season and let them know we would be going in a different direction at this time.

The safety of our drivers, crew, fans and staff is always our No. 1 priority.

After receiving this notice, Jay Masur of Med Star expressed his opinion on this matter to social media, texts and calls to some of our employees, and an appearance on KELOLAND news on Wednesday, May 18.

Since that time BMS has received an onslaught of negativity, attacks on our social media forcing us to deactivate them, and threats of boycotts on our track from fans, race teams, officials, vendors, sponsors and staff.

At this time we will be suspending racing at Badlands Motor Speedway until we can complete our search for a new ownership group to take over. We will keep the facility race-ready for whomever purchases BMS so they can take advantage of the 2017 season if they would like.

To help accommodate a quick sale we will be re-pricing the entire operation at $7,500,000, which is approximately half of what we have put into the entire project and complete remodel of the facility.

Everyone who has purchased tickets either on-line or in person will receive full refunds for their purchases. If they were bought on-line, the refund will be posted to the credit card that was used to purchase the tickets. If you bought them in person, you will be able to bring them to that point of purchase for a full refund plus $10 in gas money, starting on Monday, May 22nd.

All advertisers, suite holders, season ticket holders, etc… will be contacted personally by our staff and issued a full refund for your 2017 purchases.

All of us at Badlands Motor Speedway wish this would have worked out much better than it did. We had some great racing at a great facility and we are looking forward to passing the torch on to a new ownership group as soon as we can. We want to see cars back on the track and fans back into the bleachers.

Thank you very much to those who supported us along the way and joined us in our journey to build a great facility for a great sport in the great city of Brandon, South Dakota. And a big thank you to all of our staff, contractors, sponsors, vendors, officials, media and everyone else who helped bring this dream to life.

Sincerely,

Badlands Motor Speedway

Our reasoning for the separation from Med Star: Normally Mr. Masur and his Med Star team show up to our events hours prior to the event as no racecars can be fired up until a medical services team is on site. Last year they were always set up 2-3 hours early so this is when we expected them this year, especially for our largest event and our season-opener. When they were not there by 5:00pm as when expected, General Manager Tom Savage spoke with Mr. Masur who said they were on their way. Multiple calls were made thereafter, and they finally entered our property at 6:30pm, which was after the gates were already open to the fans. They did not get to the infield until 6:45pm. These unexpected delays put management in the very difficult position of having to determine if refunds needed to be made to all of the fans and what to do with the race teams who came from all over the area to compete. Cancelling a live event like this on the spot would have been very difficult and surely would have caused some major disruptions and inconveniences to unsuspecting fans and drivers.

Normally following every event, Mr. Masur and Med Star always stayed on the facility grounds to be sure the drivers, race teams and fans exited the facility safely, and that there are no medical emergencies or patrons in need. On Saturday they packed up immediately and left the property while the majority of the fans and race teams were still on property. We are thankful there were no emergencies during that time, but this was simply unacceptable and unprecedented.

Well, there, hope all you mother fuckers are happy. Badlands has shut down completely until the place is sold primarily because of all the bitching on social media from canning the safety crew. I know, when I walked in there saturday night, I thought it was odd that they were no where to be seen yet. It wasn't until 6:30-6:45 that they showed up. Normally they are there well ahead of starting time and they stay well after the event is concluded. This time it was like they couldn't wait to leave and had to race everyone out of there. I can see the point that this is unacceptable as shit can happen before and after the races, too. Oh but everything the safety crew does is spot on perfect........right. They're good no doubt about that, but that doesn't excuse them from fulfilling obligations........................or does it? Med-Star screwed the pooch this time but Masur had to cry to anyone he could about being fired. I guess the races almost were cancelled because of Med-Star. What would you message board warriors have to say had that happened? Races cancelled because Safety Crew failed to show.

And, for all the retarded idiots that mentioned going after employees that worked there all the way down to people in the concession stands, you are sick fucking idiots that need to be locked up for a long, long time. You are fucked in the head. Yeah, threatening track employees is really going to get you somewhere.

God, I'm glad I don't do facebook, twitter or any of that shit. What a pain in the ass.....................................

I couldn't have said it better.

The night of racing I saw Saturday night was the best I've seen there in many, many years there.

Thanks, Jay! You have a big hand in ruining the rest of the season for racers/fans/crews/teams/your co-workers/owners/etc. because you made it about yourself (shocking) without stating why you got fired. And that caused the avalanche of threats/complaints/etc. all in the name of you.

Really?? blame Jay?  I don't see it that way.  I'm sure there is more to the story, but blaming medstar for closing down the rest of the season is NOT the only reason,  Bottom line, its a sad deal for ALL the fans, drivers, sponsors in the entire SF area... damn.  Chuck paved this road, jay and medstar are a very small piece of that road.... just my $.02.

It's a major piece of the road, actually. The backlash from the firing on the social media outlets is entirely what prompted this complete closure now. I've been waiting for this to come about because no matter what BMS does, people just bitch about it. Screw thi, getting screwed here, there everywhere by BMS. That's all these idiots know. If you had to put up with all the shit, how long would it take for you to say Screw it, I'm done.?

Hotlaps don't start till roughly 7 maybe 7:15... (I'm never there that early).... Sprints pushing off to warm up engines could easily begin after Chuck admitted Med Star staff was on scene....

Also one of Jay's staff is my first cousin... my sister and i stood and talked to him in the pits for easily half an hour AFTER we made it down to the pits... so to the claim the Medstar staff left right after the races... I'm throwing the BS flag.

One last point... it is Chuck's security staff who directs traffic after the event... therefore any emergency situations would be Chuck's staff's responsibility, NOT Medstar's. Medstar's EMT's have helped with medical emergencies during racing events but after race security is NOT their responsibility as I see it.

Sorry Chuckie

Seems a bit ridiculous someone can supposeldy invest several millions of dollars in something and shut it down because of social media backlash.

Personally, I feel like this more scapegoating than anything, which seems like a common theme with this group. First placing blame on the Pay Day loan interest rate for closing the track, and now this. Seems the owner can do no wrong - apparently everything that has happened has been completely out of his hands.

Are you shitting me?according to this forum Chuck Brennan may be the devil himself, everything he has said or done has been wrong, Pretty sure he is responsible for global warming too, So now he's done, I figured the entire Midwest Sprintcar community would have come together for a parade and week long party, and yet you guys keep on bitching and bitching and bitching. what will make you guys happy? You all bitched when he opened badlands, you bitched because his purses were to high, bitched that he was buying drivers, bitched because he ran the same night as Knoxville , you did nothing but put him and the track down and wished the very worst for him and his businesses. You all got your wishes, he's done, his evil predatory loans that humans with brains choose to accept then claim it's not fair when they can't pay, that's gone, it's all gone and yet you all are still bitching. I hope somebody buys it and turns it into a shopping center, you guys might finally see that any racing by any owner at any track sure beats a shopping center.

Because you asked- No one abruptly shuts down a sucessful, profitable business over socal media criticism. That's just being used as an excuse to cover up a bigger problem- the track is not making enough money to keep the doors open. Blaming Medstar, fans, racers or social media comments does not change that.

Also of note: The price had been $10 million. At that price, Brennen said that was less than the $10-$12 million he had invested. Now he cut the price to $7.5 million and claims he has $15 million invested. Is it any wonder that people question the man's dealings?

I've been around racing for over 55 of my 65 years and nothing has been said on social media that wasn't said in the pits or stands before social media.  Anyone who thinks people are hard on racing hasn't visited some of the Vikings and Wild boards I frequent.  To blame shutting a track down on internet posts absolves management of responsibility.  If the sport is so fragile that the opinions of a few discontents can shut down tracks racing has much bigger problems and is using social media as a scapegoat.  The track was doing fine for years despite an occasional negative post.  Blaming social media for problems caused by poor decisions is one of my pet peeves.

I find that ironic as well about Brennan claiming that he now has $15 million invested in the speedway.  Where did this extra $5 million go into.   Probably after losing his ass financially again on Saturday, he'd figured he had enough.

So says the biggest piece of shit on this message board. Yes, it pisses me off that another race track has decided to close for good. It should upset you but you're only a fan of you and not the sport, asshole.

If you think Jay Masur was completely innocent in this deal, I feel for you. Jay has damn good people working for him and they make him look good.

Why was Matt Juhl at Knoxville? Why do you think? He's running for points dipshit. Same thing with Lynton, I'll bet. What's real funny here is now seeing you stick up for the Wild Wings cars, oh, that's good you two-faced sob.

Also, I'll bet the crowd at Badlands last Saturday night was more than attended Knoxville. BTW, I walked into the track Saturday night at 6 PM and Med-Star was nowhere to be seen. They didn't show for another 30-45 minutes. Maybe they had a backyard bar-b-que to be at, who knows. They were late. I know what I saw and you are the one that has no clue here, as normal.

Never have said one word to Chuckie and, yes, I think he throws a lot of hissy-fits. But, take a look..........he announces a 2018 schedule and all he sees on this fucking board is bitching about it. We all know how you'd respond if you were in the same shoes.

Why don't you just go back under your bridge or rock or whereever you slither out from?

There are a lot of us upset at the closing of Huset's. Before you accuse anyone of not being a fan of the sport, take a good look at Brennan! Speaking for myself (and I'm sure the majority), I'm not at all sorry to see Brennan get the hell of racing! Just a few short years ago, there was promise in the upper Midwest that 410 racing and racing in general was going to experience growth. Brennan has the "it's not my fault.....blame someone else attitude". Well "news flash"! From the very beginning it was his out of control ego and selfish attitude and failure to cooperate that created the mess that's going on. He is the central figure in all of this. He could have made a difference and been praised for it. Does anyone really think his throwing the extra money around at the race track, or against other racing events was his being generous? That's ego run amok if ever it was on display. It's soon going to be time for Brennan to wise up. Whether it's Huset's or not, there will be racing again in the Sioux Falls market. For a lot less money invested than the price Brennan wants, another facility could be established close enough to the huge fan base the area has to be successful. Then what's his investment worth? And yes! That market will support Sunday night racing done right, and so would race teams!

Oh man, you really got me! I really thought we were bros from all those Reports you replied to way back in the day.

I haven't said anything about Chuck this week until just now. All I was saying is that Jay is not as innocent as he is proclaiming himself to be. And now because of his ego and Chuck's ego, the limited race season is now over. And who knows if another race will ever be held there again. It's so childish it even got to this point and now everyone suffers.

The track didn't lose its ass last week like you've said. There was anywhere from 4-5k in the stands and a steady line at the concessions stand.

Has Chuck fucked things up since the vote last fall? Yep, on multiple occasions now. I've been praying for a new owner ever since they said it was for sale. But because of people like you who don't like change, this thing was doomed from the beginning.

Oh by the way, you haven't thanked him for your $4k to win shows this year and the 10 free pit passes and right rear the teams got last week.

Not gonna be a Brennan touter or basher here, but outside of Tony Stewart night 4 years ago, Husets specials hadn't drawn 10,000 people in a long,  long time, 18 to 20 years and I was probably at all of them. CB screwed up countless times in the last 18 months but Sioux Falls area racing was a falling apart, fucked up pile of donkey dung LONG before Brennan hit the scene. Rubinization killed off Lake County Speedway, damn near killed off Rock Rapids and was well on its way to killing off Husets. CB thought he could cure 20 years of Husets and Hartford screwups over night by throwing tons of money at it and quickly found out it wasn't gonna work. Hopefully he drops to Tony Stewart's 6 million price and the sale happens soon.

Any chance of someone leasing Badlands and holding the 2 day WoO show there?

It would have to be SLS or no one. The WoO won't go with any other sanctioning groups in the vast expanses of the midwest.

BTW, you are more correct than anyone else on this board.

Just my Opinoin, but if Tony offered $6 mil, I think he'd already own the place.
