I've know I've only been to like 20 or so Outlaw shows in my life, but Donny Schatz has never won an Outlaw show when I've been in attendance. I went to Knoxville for the first time last year, and Jason Johnson ended the streak..... you're welcome, haha.  I was supposed to go to Volusia this year, but that trip fell through, that trip would have ended my streak.  Who knows how long it'll go?

Johnny--hope to see you next year at Knoxville again-----PLease!

Yes, please go to Knoxville again!   Actually, I like Schatz but it was nice to see someone else win.   It shouldn't just be a foregone conclusion that he can never be beat...

Hahaha. I already renewed my tickets for this year, Hoss. Can't wait to get out there again, I had a helluva good time for the entire week.

Its funny about that Nationals, Donny was like Michael Myers in Halloween. He was the "villain", that hardly anyone wants to see victorious, and just like Myers he never stopped coming after Johnson. Even when Madsen caught him and I was thinking "Holy shit, this is actually happening. We're actually gonna see someone dethrone Schatz". What does he does he do? He shakes off Kerry quickly and just keeps tracking Johnson down.  Stalking.... stalking..... gaining.... gaining. By that point I was like, "I knew it. Just like Myers, he's gotta come back for one more scare. It can't be too easy." Im not sure anyone else couldn't have stayed that close to Johnson. One hell of a race. Considering what was at stake, it was probably the best 410 feature I've seen in person.  By the way, he wasn't too happy immediately following the race while they were still on the track.

I was also at Lernerville last year when he took the lead from Gravel, but made a rare mistake and jumped the cushion, giving the lead, and eventual win back to Gravel.

You're exactly right about Knoxville. Jason earned that one because as you put it, Schatz never quit stalking him. It's amazing how he can just shake off a challenge like he so often does. It's like the guy is totally void of feeling pressure. He's so focused and locked in and never seems to lose sight of the prize. I was at Lernerville for that race as well and I commented to my buddy after he jumped the cushion to mark this down as the day we finally saw Donny make a mistake lol.

I love the "holy shit, this is actually happening" quote.  Exactly what I was thinking in my head and so were 20,000 other people.  You are correct though.  It looked like he was done when Kerry caught him.  Then, not only was he right back in it, but when Johnson got out of shape on the front stretch taking the white, I thought he scrubbed enough speed off to let Donny back by him.

Yes, I know Donny wasn't happy while still on the track, but he gained my respect that night.  He took a few breaths, and handled himself like a professional in victory lane and during his interview.

All of that said, I am becoming a huge Gravel fan and hoping he can heat up as the season goes on and give Mr. Schatz a little trouble.  Time will tell.  Let's go racing!!

I think Gravel is definitely good enough to keep Donny honest. Should be fun to see as the season progresses. Jason Johnson has been quite fast as well. I'd love to see him keep it going. What you said about Schatz handling himself like a professional is dead on the money. One thing no one can take away from him is that he's an extremely clean driver and he handles himself like a true professional. He's a great role model.

Great observation! There have been numerous mistakes made by Donny's competitors when they are leading that has handed him a win. Not taking anything away from him, but those mistakes have added up. Stewrat was leading early and gets loose trying to pass Dobmier trying to lap him, gets caught up and loses the lead and then some. Brown passes Donny down low in four coming for the white flag.......then goes high in four coming for the green......how stupid is that? All Schatz had to do was go low where he'd been passed on the previous lap and win at the flag.

The best driver is often the one who makes the least mistakes

"Holy shit, this is actually happening." ..... thats what I was thinking when Schatz won Knoville from 21st a few years ago

Wish I had seen Johnson beat him tho..... one reason I didn't go was that I didn't think anyone could beat Donnie

I'm the same way.  I used to be anybody but Schatz, after awhile I got over it and started appreciating the greatness.  No matter where he starts at Williams Grove, I make it a point to locate the 15 car during the race and it's usually worth my time to watch.

I'm still " anybody but Schatz", but have always had nothing but respect for him

Is this his best start ever? I think he's taking revenge on the whole sprint car world for losing at Knoxville last year....

Donny Schatz is smart. No worries except driving. Many drivers have to come up with sponsorship, keep a payroll, some are hands on mechanics, even drive the truck some of witch he might do.But his main focus is driving and He is one of the best ever.Werner is also one of the best crewcheifs so they will be on top for a while. They also seem to have very few DNFs and sometime racing luck doesnt hurt but for now he has an edge.

I was just going to ask the same thing, 5 of 6 to start the outlaw season is beyond impressive.

Thank you Straight Shooter--I've been to every WoO race at Vegas since it opened, and yet it never dawned on me to make the comparison to Penn National.  I think Vegas has more banking, but indeed a LOT of similarities.  I never go to see sprint cars at Penn National, but the super sportsman/small block Sunday double headers were always good reason to head to Central PA.

Johnny, Penn National had holes like that everynight that also made the racing very exciting and seperated the men from the boys or the wings from the cage!!!

Looks like the Outlaw series should institute the nose to tail restarts. The final start reminded me of anything goes no matter what. No order what so ever to be able to call jumping...SAD

"Double file nose to tail.  As soon as the front row fires, you are free to move around."  This is what I think I hear on the radio every start.  So as soon as the front row hits the gas, it is anythng goes and there is no jumping.

On another note, Donny is the best ever.  I've never really been a Schatz fan, but when you compare his success to Kinser's, look at the competition.  Kinser mostly beat guys in equipment that was nowhere near what he was driving.   Largely a man among boys per se.  A man should beat boys.  Schatz is beating everyone in equipment that is nearly identical to his.  His team is winning with brainpower, not equipment power.  Kinser was great no doubt, but winning with equal equipment is greater than winning with superior equipment to me.  Hitting a home run off a major league pticher is greater than hitting a home run off a high school pitcher.

And that was largely Brad Doty's point when they interviewed him on Winged Nation.   It was pretty well known that Steve had superior horsepower.

I'm 45 and he's the best I've ever seen. It's not all about the car either. Yes he has the best ride available but he also dominated in the family owned car. Plus in today's world, the cars are more equal than ever. I admire the man but get tired of him winning like everybody else.

How about WoO just hands him the championship trophy now so he can have the summer off and we the fans can actually watch some other people win some races.  I'm not anti-Donny, but what he's doing right now is absurd.  Much respect to him and his team, he's making all the other WoO regulars look like amateurs.

asking....Is it that he has the BEST available ride?  Or does HE make it the best ride?

Not just the woo regulars, hes beaten Rico, Bell, Brown, both Madsens, most of the best of the Posse. between Florida and Vegas, you're pretty much racing 20 of the top 25 guys in the country and he's won 8 of 11 and led 10 of 11. Incredible.

I'm tired of him losing. He's already lost 3 this year add that to losing last years Nationals. I'd like to see 60 wins this year.

Hope he picks up the pace soon.
