Nice, another hockey nut!  I played hockey through college and I grew up playing with RJ Umberger, who as you know went to OSU and played for CBus for a while.  Known him for 30 years, though we kind of don't like each other so much anymore, haha.  Saad also grew up not too far from me and will probably end up being the best "Pittsburgh" born player ever in NHL.  Though I am a Trocheck fan as well so he'll have some competition.

I always played hockey when I was a kid but around here it was not really popular and no real opportunities to play other than in the streets as a kid during the summer or on some pond in the winter. It became popular around the mid 90's when we had the Columbus Chill which was an ECHL team now known as the Reading Royals and their popularity lead to the Jackets coming to Columbus. When I graduated high school I got a job at one of the local rinks here in Columbus and have played in leagues that they have had for about 14years now.

I actually played in a couple of pick up games with RJ when he played for the Jackets and was in town. During the summers a lot of current, former, and college players would come into the rink and if they did not have enough guys to do 5 on 5 would invite a few of the employees to play so I would always suit up and skate with them. Had Andrew Cassells, Jean Luc Grand Pieere, Jody Shelley, RJ, Dan Fritche, Jeff Salajko who now coaches for the Red Wings would goaltend from time to time, John Markell OSU's head coach at the time, Scott Levins and some former Chill/OSU players.

It was fun playing but towards the final 20minutes they would say ok lets start playing for beer and the losing team had to pay for the winning team. Next thing you know you had rink wide saucer passes tape to tape, open ice hits, slap shots from the slot, cross checking around the crease, body checking in the boards. Most intense/scared to death style of play I have ever been in in my entire life. I can hold my own on the ice against any competition but I took a pass from Jean Luc and my stick flew out of my hands when the puck hit it because they were passing it that hard, and took a slapper from Levins and I felt the puck hit my shin guards then heard the sound about 3seconds later and with my leg numb. Fun times that gave me an even greater respect of how these guys can play.

Crawford seems to always step up his game win the playoffs come around and is a whole different player compared to the regular season and is on a whole different level. Darling is a great option to have as a backup and probably would be a starter anywhere else in the NHL and could probably get the job but as you said in the playoffs, I'm going with Crawford over almost any other goaltender in the NHL. I married a Blackhawks fan so I follow and keep up with Chicago because of her.

I live in Columbus OH and grew up as a Ducks fan as they were just starting as a team when I started following hockey as a kid. Then obviously I started supporting the Blue Jackets as well once we got a team in Columbus so we are enjoying whats going on now. What is wierd is everyone around here is so obsessed with Ohio State football 24/7 to the point where it kind of makes you sick but now the talk around the talk has been about the Jackets instead of the College Football Playoff so its been refreshing not hearing about Ohio State every waking moment of the day.

By the way, thanks for Brandon Saad. He is working on nicely for us!!

You are welcome for Saad. I'll take Anisimov and the money saved that went towards the Bread Man, Panerin

Didn't ya ever see the Owls play?_  We went down there a few times.  The IHL I believe.. It was really goon hockey, but it was entertaining.

Hey Stubb.  Haven't seen any postings lately, will you and yours be at the Chili Bowl this year?

Sadly the Owls were a little bit before my time. I believe they folded a in 77 and I wasn't born until 86 so I was not around to see them play. I do however, have an old program and a few ticket stubs of some Owls games as my Uncle who is a Hockey nut himself saved some from when he went to some games as a teenager and gave them to me as a gift.

I'd imagine some of the old school IHL games would be goon hockey and highly entertaining. My uncle shared some stories with me and said most of the time you got a two for one with a ticket purchase meaning you got to see a hockey game and boxing match for the price of 1 ticket.

Watched Saad a lot in Rockford when he played for the 'Hawks minor league team, the Icehogs.  Then got to see him become a machine in the NHL.  Was sad to see him go but gotta agree with Maddog--almost forgot about him due to the moves they made with the extra cap room.  Glad to see Panarin sign an extension.

Now back to this Badlands topic---I am very upset but only for my selfish reasons.  I have a stop-over planned in Brandon on a Saturday night in June.  Now we will be 5 hours away when they actually run on Sunday nights.  Happy to hear sold (if true) and back to Sunday nights though.  In the long run, this is the best move for sprint car racing.

Are we talking Grand Rapids Owls?  I went to a few of their games at Stadium Arena.  I did have a program last I knew from '79 sometime maybe.  Not sure I can still find it.  I think that was their last year.  I was a whopping 5.

I believe the Columbus Owls did eventually become the Grand Rapids Owls eventually. They were in Columbus until 77 I think and then went to Dayton Ohio maybe then to Grand Rapids.

Back on topic to Badlands/Husets. If it has been sold then great and best of luck to the new owners. It has been on my bucket list to make it out to the midwest and go to Knoxville and Husets for awhile so hopefully that can happen again now.

Duck fan, you bet.  Always been a Duck fan, Daffy, Donald, Scrooge McDuck, and Chip and Dale, think there is one more duck youngster in the family.  And can't forget the seldom seen Grandma and Grandpa McDuck.

But my all time favorite guy is Mighty Mouse.  That guy could beat Supergirl in a pizzing contest.

Columbus Checkers came into the old IHL in 1966, about the time I came to town to work on building the Anheuser-Busch factory in Worthington, and lasted until 1970. Moe Bartoli was the player-coach and had a slapshot that would have gotten Bobby Hull's attention. The goalie never wore a mask and looked it.  Can't remember his name.  Good old rough & tumble hockey & the best seat in the house was like $6.  They became the Golden Seals from '71-'73, then the Owls till, I think, '77.

I left town in '68 and got sent to Fort Wayne, Indiana to build a BF Goodrich plant and got to follow the IHL for another 2 seasons with the Komets, the longest lasting team in the league, from '52-'90 when the league folded.  Last I knew the Komets were still around in the ECHL.

Went back to California and suffered through the years when the L A Kings were one of the worst teams around, moved to NorCal mid '80s and now follow Stockton's Thunder, a new AHL team that took over from Stockton's Heat, an ECHL team.

Going racing in the stock cars still occupies most of my time but still like my hockey in the winter.

I hope he gets $10 or $15 million for the track (does that include the two brand new Cat graders), but would be surprised if he gets more than one or two million.  The guy loves dirt track racing, he put his pocketbook where his mouth is and it bit him in the ass, where his pocketbook should have been kept.  If I was rich, I'd either buy a track and pay out big or buy a team and follow them in my new million dollar motorhome.  That'd be the life for me!  A track though, maybe far too much work at my age.

I think if he truely "loved dirt racing" he wouldn't have went directly to closing up shop and cancelling the banquet for the racers and he would have went to work on a business model for the track that made financial sense without the funds from the Dollar Loan Centers subsidizing it.

If he indeed does truly "love dirt racing", I hope to see him at races across the US giving out bonus money to guy that put on the best show every night or bonus money like JW Hunt did back in the day.

I fault no racers at all for taking advantage of the purses he paid out last year.  Race Teams are a business and take money to keep going.

Conversely, the track is a business that needs to make money to stay open.  He is fortunate that he has millions to spend without needing a return on the investment.  Most other promotors are hoping they make enough money to pay the purse they advertised.

Chuck Brennan has marred sprint car racing with foolish statements, reckless spending and not understanding the history and not caring. He has built a scar on racing that will take a long, long time to heal. But I think it is important to realize some things. I am not about to defend his actions with racing BUT he was a businessman doing business in a strictly legal venture and the government shut him down. He was not a predatory lender but active under the usury law in South Dakota that other business firms also used to their advantage. What happened with the 'peoples' vote was a slick job of propaganda orchestrated by Steve Hildebrand and a former minister named Hickey that told of the sins Brennan was committing by his high interest rate loans. They beat this drum for a long time and the people who voted apparently never performed any research to see just exactly what Brennan's firm was doing. They simply believed what H & H was telling them was true and Brennan was the devil himself and had to go. While this is a thumbnail capsule of the entire procedure what it really means is the government (Hildebrand is a democratic political stratigst who was among Obama's fold) once again stuck their nose into a private enterprise and forced it to close. Or, in other words, the government doesn't think we are smart enough to make these kind of decisions so they again made it for us. So what will the next infringment of private business be for H & H? How about credit cards? Credit card companies are very aggressive with late or non payments on monthly bills. The meager payments people make do not even erase the interest rate and they fall helplessly behind and remain in deep debt and these are people who can least afford these rates? How about casinos? The companies that build the gambling casinos do not build them to lose money, they build them to MAKE money, a lot of money. The people who visit these gambling casinos spend complete paychecks in one night and can not make mortgage payments or buy groceries. The casinos thrive on these kind of people and they are the ones who can least afford the loss. HOw about some of the car loans that have people paying more for the loan than the car is worth at the end of 48 months? These are the people who can least afford this kind of payments so H & H have a lot of options ahead of them if they continue to impose government restrictions on private enterprise. I hope Husets Speedway is sold to a business person or persons who knows racing and the people involved and the heritage will live on.

Most states have limits on what can be charged in interest rates. You sound as though you believe the success of busuness' in our country is based on the business they receive from those with poor incomes or poor credit. Do you really think the casinos are being built because they know they will make their money on the down trodden? And the credit card companies are surviving on late charges. Get real! Credit cards have replaced decent wages. How happy would a large percentage of the middle class be, if the only way they could purchase goods was with the money they take home? Not happy for long, that's for sure. And as far as the government thinking a large majority of citizens aren't smart enough to make their own decisions........it's the truth!

What I find comical is how the payday lenders were saying they are trying to help the poor & down trodden. Than when the state of SD gave the poor & down trodden a lower interest rate, well the payday lenders were no longer willing to help the poor and down trodden.

BS political claims from the haters too. SD leans heavily republican, so 76% of "duped" voters were prolly not big Obama fans. lol

Add that I'm quite sure if given the chance, American voters would vote in better CC interest rates for all & more frequent & higher winning rates at casino's.

I also know that both of the H's enjoy occasional beers, are pro-life, and even enjoy hunting. Personally we're free to believe what ever we want, that's America, but some want to divide everything into democrat or republican and that's the biggest problem our country has.

These  pay day lending companies loan you say $500.  They  know you have a slim chance in hell of paying you back $500 in a week.  You pay back $50 a week and in one year you still owe $500.  The people that borrow from these places are not the bright as an average person.

364% A.P.R. the terms is 7 days.

364%÷ 52= .07%

The actual interest rate charged for the Terms is 7%.

Borrow $100 on Monday. Bring back $100 the next Monday +$7 in interest.

Plus sales tax.

36%A.P.R. ÷52 = .0069% interest that is what they're supposed to charge.

Borrow that same $100 on Monday. Bring back  $100.69...

The terms are a week. Not a year. Your bridging a gap, not starting a business.

Chucks business plan for Badlands ENT. was terrible, that I do agree with.

Personal responsibility. We need more of it. These do-gooder crusaders helped no one!

Hope that helps.

Its not necessarily lack of intelligence, more often its desperation. If you got laid off & are facing eviction in the dead of winter, you'll knowingly take a bad deal rather than have your family on the street

Pay day loan companies take advantage of the poor
