Seriously though, I don't blame you one bit.  I have a lot of races on my radar.  If they are allowed to run, I will go.  I'm 46 and, as far as I know, perfectly healthy.  Contrary to some of the accusations thrown my way, I am not sitting here wearing a mask, and typing in gloves.  I have been going to work, the store, and will not be afraid to go to the track if they public health dept. says it's okay to do so.  The spread doesn't even need to stop.  Hell, I think the only way out of this is to get it through the community while protecting the vulnerable.  So, I fully expect to get it---if I haven't already!

Hope to see you at the track in 2021.  This ain't going to be a normal year no matter what smoke people try to blow up everyone's asses.  



I would never base what could be a potentially life or death descicion for me on the political rants of some message board hero.  I take all of these discussions with a grain of salt and they seldom change my opinions.  

Most of my decision is based on concerns about the virus but a good portion of them revolve around the hoops I'd have to jump through just to attend a race.  I'm not going to go out of my way to score a ticket when crowds are restricted or even things like freeway rest stops being closed.  I'm old, I can't go much further than an hour and a half without stopping and driving cross country sounds kind of sketchy right now.  Just a lot of things that came together that convinced me it won't be worth the hassle this season.

My other big car event of the summer, Back to The 50's at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds where they draw about 10,000 street rods, is cancelled this year as well.  I like to spend the day there taking photos and that won't happen either.  My interest in cars and racing have been shelved for the year and I went so far as to spend my first half of the season racing budget on another electric guitar.  I knew I wouldn't be going to any races through June and was coveting an SG with humbuckers for more sound versatility. 

I've got Floracing for the year and they have three nights of Late Model racing this week, invitational events from down south.  I suspect there will eventually be a few All Star and USAC races but I'm not sure about the IRA.  If what Dirtvision offers includes some stuff from my neck of the woods and a big enough schedule to justify the cost I might do a month or two of Fast Pass as well.  Aside from that I've got a ton of streaming channels, a big yard and house that always needs something done to it.  I will be fine without live racing as my well being doesn't depend on attending races.  When having fun becomes a bigger hassle than the enjoyment I derive from the fun (in this case going to races) it's not worth the hassle.  When it's convenient and safe for senior citizens to go I will be back.

Really big news today that the antiviral drug Remdesivir is the first to show efficacy in a clinical study. The drug reduced recovery time for hospitalized patients by 31%. It also showed a decrease in mortality from 11% in the placebo group to 8% in the treatment group but that may not be statistically relevant (these patients were hospitalized and severe case patients). The FDA is going to give it emergency use and it will be the standard of care going forward. This is great news, and now we can start testing it with other drugs to possibly develop a cocktail (like what's used to treat HIV). We can also start testing it early in patients to see if it can significantly prevent patients from progressing to severe, which would be a real game changer. 
 

There is drawbacks though- This drug currently can only be administered through IV. It also apparently is difficult to produce so it'll be tough to ramp up and get the doses required. I imagine the Feds will put pressure on them to license it out.

I was reading the same study.  The 31% reduced hospital time is great and hopefully it has the potential to prevent patients from progressing.  Drop in fatality rate may not look good now, but if it can help keep patients from progressing to severe or critical, it could have an unseen positive effect on the mortality rate.  

Is this enough to get us back into crowds?  Maybe in the near future.  As you said, not enough doses to make a big difference yet.  Also need to get it in a form that can be prescribed after a positive test---and that may take a while too.

While that report yesterday was encouraging they used it on hospitalized patients so it's not going to prevent outbreaks that could potentially overwhelm local health care systems.  I don't think knowing that I would have a little bit better chance of getting out of ICU would convince me thst it was alright to mingle in crowds.

The drop in fatality IS good, it just wasnt statistically significant to say for certain it reduces it (they use the phrase strongly indicate). I don't think the results yesterday themselves, while very positive, will change anything policy wise. What I am looking for is the future testing of it in early cases. Antivirals are typically most effective early in infections. Tamiflu is the biggest example of this, if you take it early in a flu infection it works tremendous, if you take it late it hardly does anything. Hopefully this could be like tamiflu and giving it early could prevent most from advancing in infection, that would be a game changer.

Meanwhile NASCAR, the series many on this board like to hate on, will be resuming their revised schedule and will run two races per week when they start up.  I am not a NASCAR hater and I will be watching every one of their events.  A classic example of take what you can get.

These are the important questions folks need to be asking themselves:

1. Why can you go to Walmart but not Kohl's?

2. Why the Dollar store and not a mom-and-pop shop?

3. Why can't you have an elective surgery, but you can have an abortion which is elective?

4. Why should you stay inside but yet heat and sunlight kill the virus?

5. Why can't kids (who are not at risk) play on an outdoor playground, where sun kills this virus?

6. Why don't people know that these are "recommendations" not laws because they have not gone through due process?

7. Why is it okay for government officials to get a haircut, but not common citizens?

8. Why the fear, when this virus has a less than 1% death rate?

8.5 Why have coroners questioned death certificates listed as CV-19?

Friday night we opened up Monarch , with easy to follow social distancing rules in the stands (which literally was a simple as blocking every other row from fans sitting in them, and using those rows to get up to their seat or go down to get food; etc, so no one walked directly in front of the people that were nearby them), the fan count was about as high as it's ever been in the history of the track. Fans were vocal, appreciative and adhered to the event guidelines. Car count in the pits was up close to 50% of normal - and it's a Friday track kind of out of the beaten path of racers.

Last night we opened up 82 with the exact same safety rules with the exact same fan results. Huge crowd, everyone complied and it was a crazy crazy night at the races...corner 1 lights got popped by lightning day before which also fried the computer in the tower that the scorers did all the transponder work and wiped out a lot of the PA system...nearly double the amount of cars in the pits (it wasn't a sprint show but there were 167 cars that shown up) and we made it through all the gremlins, had a superb track all night long, and people got to see double the racing program as normal for $15. There was wall-to-wall racing in all divisions, tons of wild incidents, a few shenanigans thrown in for good measure and gave people an excuse to sleep in this morning.

My point is, humans, especially in this country are very social creatures, and if you keep them in a cage long enough the outcome (like the recent protests and such nationwide) probably is going to be worse than the cause at some point.

And if people simply adapt to some of these modifications as this situation continues - especially at outdoor activities - I think it can be done safely and smartly. But the gen pop has to all work together...and I haven't heard even one peep from any of the fans or teams since that were 'inconvenienced' or their experience was diminished from just changing up a couple of things when they arrived at the track.

Plus the 'text food ordering' system I developed for Monarch was a huge hit - and something that should have been done at tracks years ago with the tech advances that are sitting right in front of them. Fans went out of their way leaving the track commenting how much they liked the new service.

So things aren't all bad. People just have to adapt a bit and tracks have to be a bit more creative and use common sense. I've never been much of a doom and gloom person either. I always thought life what what you make of it given whatever obstacles are in your way. Overcome. Move forward. Repeat.

All that being said, I might as well plug our big Sprint Car Bandits event this coming Saturday at Monarch. Smile

Current forecast shows 73 degrees, partly cloudy, light breeze and 10% chance precip. So it doesn't get much better than that for sprint car racing conditions.
