I'm so damn scared of a virus that kills ~ 3% of the known positive cases (mostly old and pre-existing conditions, you know, the people that are next in line for the morgue anyway) that I wetted my leg and plan to live in my parents windowless basement with air filtration forever.

Have fun living in fear for the rest of your life.     The virus is not a hoax but the over reaction and fear driven by the media most certainly is.

I hardly consider myself as next in line for the morgue but I'm soon to turn 69 and manage high BP and cholesterol with medication but can still put in a good day of yard work or remodeling.  My mother died in 1961, step mother and two day old half brother in 1964 and my father died in my arms in 1965 while I tried to revive him.  Consequently, I had to work 50 years and pay for my own basement along with Dirtvision and Floracing.  I own a home, raised four productive adult kids, have a good retirement with investments and am a Navy flight deck catapult crew veteran so I think I checked off most of the right boxes.  I make necessary trips, groceries, gas, hardware store, auto parts and am not living in fear, I am living in commen sense.

The percentage of severe cases go up in proportion to age so that it's not the same for someone close to 70 as it is for a 20 or 30! Year old.  My wife takes this very serious and she would hit the ceiling if I attended a race after she had to be tested for Covid a couple weeks ago.  Attending a race I could watch on TV is not essential and the other things I mentioned are.

I am tempted to unleash a barrage of Navy language on you for your callous disregard for your fellow older racing fans but I won't.  Do you think I'm enjoying sitting at home all summer and not seeing the adult kids and grandkids?   My wife and I like to travel overseas and we had big plans for this summer and now Americans are banned from traveling to most of the rest of the world so this is no fun for anybody.  This is no time to be insulting fellow racing fans who have supported this sport for decades.  I hope that you, your parents and grandparents stay well if you still have them with you and I wish you the best but please think twice before insulting the older fans who's only offense is wanting to get through this thing.

Approx 8000 people die in the US every single day of the year.

China Virus has just sped up the selection rate of those that were already nearing the end of their life.

No one is going to live forever, I'm not going to spend the rest of my life afraid that I MIGHT die.   News flash, you will die.

You STILL don't get it! Its not about YOU.... not wearing a mask endangers OTHERS

I noticed during the Outlaw show tonight in Grand Forks ND that all the interviews were done like a few months ago..Didtancing and masks..Also noted that either you went in pits or grand stands but not both..If you were in pit pass, you stayed there and same with grandstand tickets..If you purchased a package you could get the difference back.

That was just window dressing. People were shoulder to shoulder in the stands with no masks

Then don't argue with yourself, argue against the facts.     The media is purposely spreading unneccessary fear.

https://www.franklintempletonnordic.com/investor/article?contentPath=html/ftthinks/common/cio-views/on-my-mind-they-blinded-us-from-science.html

Covid is very age and health discriminatory.  92% of the Covid deaths are 55 and older, 80% of the deaths are 65 and older.

Anyone that is under 55 yrs old and doesn't have health conditions has almost 0 risk of death FROM Covid.

If I was older or had health conditions I would be wanting the younger and healthier to hurry up and spread this amonst themselves to build herd immunity.    There is no vaccine.   A vaccine that is effective against Covid would be the first vaccine that is effective against any coronavirus, EVER.

This "stop the spread" BS is sickening.   There is no stopping this short of herd immunity.   In order to actually "stop the spread" the entire world would have to shut down EVERYTHING for a month minimum.     That means EVERYTHING, no grocery stores, no clinics and hospitals, no services of any kind.   Everyone is completely locked down for a month while were under martial law.    That's not going to happen.

From the article: https://www.mdanderson.org/cancerwise/what-is-covid-19-coronavirus-herd-immunity-when-will-we-achieve-herd-immunity.h00-159383523.html

When will we achieve herd immunity against this coronavirus?

When we have a vaccine for COVID-19. Because we can’t just rely on natural immunity, or the kind that develops after you’ve been infected and recovered.

It will take years & millions of deaths to reach herd immunity

https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/coronavirus/in-depth/herd-immunity-and-coronavirus/art-20486808

From the article: Even if infection with the COVID-19 virus creates long-lasting immunity, a large number of people would have to become infected to reach the herd immunity threshold. Experts estimate that in the U.S., 70% of the population — more than 200 million people — would have to recover from COVID-19 to halt the epidemic. If many people become sick with COVID-19 at once, the health care system could quickly become overwhelmed. This amount of infection could also lead to serious complications and millions of deaths, especially among older people and those who have chronic conditions

You really need to move on from this, 90% of the media's coverage of this has been a complete joke .

Man, this thread basically became a handful of folks saying I told you so and trying to guilt and shame free people.   99% of people who went, drivers, teams, fans did so knowing they could get covid and probably not caring because they are not scared of it.  If you were you shouldn't have gone, and you shouldn't go anywhere, cause you can get it anywhere.  You should live in a bubble, not force others to. If you stayed home, then no one who went gave it to you.   You made your choice, they made theirs.

I think I'm making it clear that staying away from the tracks is my personal decision but I have expressed frustration with the circumstances.  To put it another way, I have been going to races for sixty years and would like to attend a few as much as anybody.  I'm not living in a bubble but have agreed with my wife to avoid crowds and was all set to attend a race at another track next month until this incident.  That is my personal decision, would I like it if others were more serious about this, yes because that might convince me to give it a try but just last night they were too close in the stands at Grand Forks for my personal comfort.  That doesn't affect anyone else and I'm not demanding anything, just saying why I won't go.

Am I deprived due to my decision?  Last night I watched the All Star/IRA Feature in its entirety then every lap of the WoO Sprint Feature and most of the WoO LM feature.  That's more racing than I could ever ask for so I'm not deprived in that sense.   A lot of NHL, NFL, and MLB fans watch it all on tv and never attend a game and that is now an option with dirt racing all without the six support classes we endure where I live.

I did, however, get to know a lot of people in the pits and infield and I miss that.

I'm not directing anything negative towards you but I agree with the two camps.  If a person isn't attending they're automatically assumed to be pissing their pants and living in a bubble in their parents basement.  Our only offense?  Wanting to attend a race without being packed in the stands nuts to butts.  We are considered awful people for saying that we'd like to go to a race on a racing forum.  I couldn't have made this scenario up a year ago where people who wanted to attend races are catching flack for it.  I floated the idea of a setting aside a section where us older folks could spread out more but not all older one feel that way which further muddys the waters.  Apparantly some in my age group consider live racing to be a hill they're willing to die on causing further strife among some of the fans.  What a crazy year this has been.

Last complete CDC data set (2017) shows 3616 people aged 25-34 died of cancer. COVID has killed 2402 of the same age range in what, five and a half months of 2020?

From the same dataset, 90.59% of 2017 cancer deaths were ages 55 and older.

Maybe we should quit researching cancer cures/treatments? Might as well just let them get their number called early, right?

And I understand the difference between cancer and a virus, just pointing out how silly the "IT ONLY KILLS OLD PEOPLE" argument is.

The Nazis weren't going to let their minds be changed either. History will view one side as right, one side as wrong. And they're going ask themselves "what in the absolute fuck were these morons thinking fighting against a global pandemic?"

Just incredible. The average rationale, logic and intellect of Americans is just tailspinning.

I did notice during one of the camera shots on DirtVision a large sign at the front of the grandstands saying SOCIAL DISTANCING WILL BE ENFORCED... and I wanted to ask "When and where?" because it was certainly not in those stands last night.

The stereotype of the dirt track race fan is no longer a stereotype.

Hey rev, I've agreed with you on this whole thing and still do.  I just wanted to share with you the info I read in an article a couple of days ago.  It was a consensus from a group of disease experts who believe herd immunity can be achieved at a much lower rate than previously thought.  A few of these experts believe New York City has almost reached herd immunity already.  The average agree upon % to hit herd immunity between members of the group was 41%.  They said the number will be shifting as they learn more, but believe the original 70% does not fall in line as they are learning this virus is not as contagious as originally thought.  It is having a difficult time getting footing in rural areas.  Not that many won't have outbreaks but we just don't see them sustaining themselves like we do in dense areas.  They are claiming this will burn out after 40-50% of the general population has had it.  I'm not telling you this to argue your point, just sharing what looks like potentially good news.

“China Virus” - brought to you by the same guy who's bankrupting way more American farmers than he did casinos. And the same guy that's costing YOU, not China, a bunch of tax and tariff money.

Seems strange that revjimk has not said "no politics" yet.

People keep bringing up Dingus. Hello! You didn’t have to go there to have a problem. Where do you think all the Dingus patrons were the next night? Or the next night? That’s right, in the stands next to you at the track.

I was one of many that received the gift of covid at Knoxville. I don’t blame Knoxville. I don’t blame Dingus. I don’t blame the world of outlaws. The responsibility falls squarely on my shoulders and I knew there was a risk of it by attending. In hindsight, maybe masks would have been a good idea inside the track premises. I don’t know. We wore them everywhere along the way except the track and our campsite. We tried to limit our contact with others and still somehow managed to get it. For all we know there are hundreds of fans who went home with this “souvenir”.

We’ll live to see another race. Once quarantine is over...
