This ain't no joke...Once widespread testing kicks in within the USA, our cases will skyrocket.

The positive to this will be that the virus will prove to be less fatal than once thought.  How much less?  That will still need to be determined.

I spoke with a nurse a local hospital in my area just a few minutes ago.  She said right now there is 1 hospital bed open as they are overrun by the flu right now.  Imagine adding another 100-500 people to critical care right now AND getting the hospital staff sick at the same time.  It is unreal to imagine but it is coming soon to a hospital near you.  Stay healthy folks.

Please drive safe when going to and from the races this spring and summer as you have a much better chance of being in an accident than getting and dying from the corona virus       Glen Murra

Yeah, great point of view....Until you're needing a hospital bed after your accident...SMH

Lmao people are still trying to downplay this. This thing is only going to get worse and more cases exponentially each day. The numbers are already compressed because the US has been woefully unprepared in testing people. Now if there is some good news, China and South Korea's number of new cases are plummeting and the warmer spring weather may help as well. My guess is there will be a lot of cancellations of events and disruptions the next month or so, but by May things will start to go back to somewhat normal.

I am hoping this is the end result as well.  I say "end result" but the horse is out of the barn with this one.  It's not like SARS or MERS where the summer ended the virus because the spread was very well contained.  We SHOULD get a break from this virus over the summer months, but it will come back as it is now circulating through the southern hemisphere where it is end of summer/fall right now.  In the mean time, it looks like a couple of promising treatments are being tested and hopefully will be available to those vulnerable to this virus when it comes back.

I too am just beside myself on people are just dismissing this.  It would be different if it were just the US "over-reacting" but when EVERY country in the world is shutting down public events, have 1000's of deaths even with mass quarantine, it should sound a small alarm bell with everyone.  Our country is not over-reacting.  They realize our medical system cannot handle this outbreak.

I think people are dismissing it unfortunately because a lot of people have become so politically driven that they make decisions based on their said political bias. If the politican(s) they like say either it is a hoax or if it is going to be the second coming of the black plague they go with what they say. It is turned into a political issue like a lot of things when it is not a political issue, its a health, human and scientific issue. Virus', biology, and science do not give a shit who you're voting for or what party you're for. Also, it seems because of the political thing that the common thing to do whenever there is an actual issue going on in the world is to say the "media" is blowing it out of proportion. One of the best things I have done the past 2years was to cut cable and just stream services so I do not watch news outlets such as CNN, Fox News, or MSNBC. With everything that has happened the past 2 years I can tell you its not media that blows things out of proportion or loses their mind, it is people. Reading social media posts all I see is this political party says this, the other political party says that, politican A says its blown out of proportion, politican B says we will die, guy A on facebook says its a conspiracy to get xyz, guy B on twitter says we need to lock ourselves in the basement for a month, everyone else follows.

Meanwhile you have the CDC, World Health Organization, and other scientists whose job it is to look out for the general welfare for the public and do not have any type of agenda. If they tell you to wash your hands, cover your mouth, stay home if sick, take certain precautions to help your body, etc do it. They are essentially paid by us to and do not get any benefit by creating mass panic because there is always going to be some sort of health issue in the country or world. It does them no good to shift resources to 1 thing unless it absolutely need to but you have plenty of people who try to sound smart that believe its a conspiracy, or say "well if its going to happen its going to happen." That's like saying well if I'm going to get hit by a bus its going to happen so why should I bother looking both ways before I cross the street.

True.  And here is the irony:  The American media is supposedly blowing this out of proportion yet the WHO has declared a pandemic because the complete lack of response.

We are in for a rude awakening and it's coming in the next 30 days

Yup. Moto GP just cancelled another race. Yet I've been told by every Boomer on my facebook feed that the US media is just blowing this out of proportion lol. Its the same shit over and over.

"Its no worse than the common flu"

"its only fatal to elderly and those with immune deficiencies"

"The common flu has killed 1,000 times people"

While these are partially true its no reason to dismiss coronavirus. Its not the end of the world to miss one sporting event for the sake of stopping the spread of a GLOBAL virus. Even if only one grandparent or one child with immune deficiencies avoids this virus due to these precautions, it will be worth it. No media outlet is fear mongering and instructing Americans to buy toilet paper or build a doomsday bunker. If you read articles rather than speculate and form opinions based off article titles and thumbnails you should come to the realization they are just reporting factual imformation. Being told to wash your hands more often and stay home if you are sick isnt panicing. But hey, when our supreme cheeto downplays the seriousness of the situation his supporters won't be convinced otherwise. Stupid is as stupid does...

Here in Ohio, the Governor just issued restrictions to mass gatherings indoors after the first community spread. Ohio State University has moved all classes to online, several local events this weekend are either canceling or rescheduling to later dates. Columbus Blue Jackets game will be played without fans, and I believe the tournament will be played with restricted fan access.

I believe the Attica opener is set for next Friday. We'll see what happens & where we stand in that regard

Rod

Just saw this

Big 12, Big Ten Tournaments -- closed to public,

MAC, Big West Tournaments -- closed to public

Ivy League Tournament -- canceled

CollegeBasketball Invitational -- canceled

but the ACC, Big East, SEC, Pac-12 Tournaments -- fans allowed, go figure

Right now Ohio is just putting restrictions on indoor events, however by the time next Friday rolls around all

gatherings of 1000+ will likely be banned.

Correct, it is only indoor events as of now. I have seen many local events (outdoor & indoor) make the decision on their own to cancel for this weekend prior to the governor's decision. As you said though, by next week it could be very likely that all gatherings 1000+ are banned. Saw where they are currently trying to track how many people one individual could have come into contact with the past couple days

This virus might be closer to you than you think.

Just learned today that I am basically 3 transmissions away from it thru a coworker if it were to follow that link. I live an hour from work (Iowa City) so I knew my risk would be there more so than home. Just didn't think it would be that close.

That last sentence is exactly why these events are getting canceled. As noted before someone could be spreading up to 14 days before getting symptoms. Also they estimate up to 15% of people won't even develop symptoms or only get them so mild they won't get tested. Now that's a good thing in the sense the actual mortality rate is likely much lower than the 3.5% it's at now. So if just 1 person goes to a race, basketball game etc that is transmitting unknowingly its putting thousands at risk and butterfly effect is likely causing thousands of cases.

And while yes the virus mostly is mild, the issue is our health care system. This thing spreads unchecked we will quickly reach our capacity and quality of care will drop dramatically for everyone. Gotta do what we can not to get to that point so we don't have to take drastic measures like China and Italy

It's likely all around us right now.  That is good news/bad news.  Good news:  many more less serious cases exist meaning the virus is not near as deadly as WHO numbers.     Bad news:  it will likely circulate until a vaccine is found killing many more than the seasonal flu.

The measures taken by our state and local governments are necessary at this point.  If you can knock this down---hard---just one time, it may keep this from being a complete epidemic disaster before summer.  That buys us and the medical community time to prepare anyways.

I don't have sprint car plans until summer.  I'm optimistic about those plans still being in place.  I'm pessimistic about spring racing.  I think it's going to be hit and miss with smaller crowds and lots of promoters cancelling races.

May not take a week now. Ohio State just announced it is cancelling it's spring football game due to the virus. To put this into perspective for some whether you like OSU or college football or not, this game brings in almost 100k or just over that each year. It is something that the school and program prides itself on so for them to make the decision to do so is telling

Mother Nature usually has her own ideas about spring racing anyways, and none of them are good!

That's why I usually don't plan any spring trips.
