Gets me to thinking: are there any tracks that even have backstretch bleachers besides The Grove ? I'm thinking if there is, theres not many. So it's a rather unique problem - fit for a unique place

Cedar Lake has stands on both the front and backstretch and Knoxville does as well.  People going into the Knoxville infield cross at the gate on the front stretch.  At Cedar we always walked across as well but the only ones down there were track workers and photographers.  I'm not understanding why PA tracks need a bridge or a tunnel.  I have been to 40 tracks and the only ones that had a tunnel was Eldora and the Minnesota State Fair track but that one is closed.  What's the deal that they need a bridge or tunnel, are they afraid they'll get their shoes muddy?

Williams Grove, Port Royal and Lincoln all have spectator areas is the infield where you can stand or set up lawn chairs. A tunnel allows you to cross back and forth without having to wait for the gates to be opened.

Knoxville , and I think Fairbury?

Oswego (N.Y.) Speedway is another place with stands on both the frontstretch and the backstretch.

I dunno. Wouldn't the stairs and the end of the tunnel be in the exact same spot as the bridge? As far as water in the tunnel, don't you have sump pumps in your part of the world? Doesn't the speedway already have one tunnel?

Yeppers, we dun got them thar sump pumpers thangs here in Pennsyltucky, but accordin to that thar article in AARN, thar ain't no good place to pump the water to. Smile

The pond/basin at turn 1 would be the best spot but it's a relatively long way to run drain piping.

What happens to the water in the front stretch tunnel?

Besides the copyright infringement, I don't have the app to copy and paste the article from the good ol newspaper that comes religiously every Thursday - except holidays- in the good ol mail Smile

OK, but maybe you could tell us the main points?

Heck if I know. I'm just goin with what Steve Bubb said in AARN. He's there, involved, and forgot more than I know about it.
Speculation and keyboard engineering is fun but he's right there on the scene, literally, I believe, so I'm goin with what he says.

Ive been following this discussion hoping an American PA fan would come to with this novel idea but,,,,,,,,Why not just use the existing tunnel? Would that create any problems?

Existing tunnel is on the other side!

LIke wading the Rio Grande to go to Canada from Williams Grove....  wink

There's more tracks with backstretch bleachers than I thought. Do those tracks allow general admission spectators in the infield?

That fans roped off in the infield is a thing in PA. The only track I can think of that does something similar in the Midwest is Oscaloosa for the Front Row Challenge. Obviously they have to walk across the track down there and it seems to work for them. If they have concessions and bathrooms in the infield why would anyone have to cross back and forth? Personally as someone who took photos in the infield for years I walked across dozens of tracks to get to the infield and it was no big deal. Nowadays watching races the last place I'd want to watch from is the infield. Especially so at some of the PA tracks that allow haulers in the infield. I have been in the Knoxville infield a few times for weekly shows with the haulers. The field goes by and quickly goes out of sight every lap. I'm not seeing the draw of spectating in the infield. That would be like buying a ticket and only getting half the value because they're out of sight half the race. This nostalgia for an old bridge makes no sense.

The track 'terrain' at WG is very different from Knoxville.  The inside rail at WG is level with the infield and the track banks up from there, so standing in the infield between 1 & 2 you can see the end of the front stretch, thru 1 &  2, and up the back stretch to 3, (except when the circus comes to town and they setup their souvey village in the infield).  At K'ville the track is actually lower than the infield and yes, the view in there is not very good.

And,  you have free movement at any time during the race with the tunnel, so people sitting in the front stretch seats can come to the infield to buy swag from the teams in the infield who sell along the fence near their pit spaces.  On the back stretch there are pits outside the track that prevent you from walking around to the tunnel, so you have to be patient and wait for a break in the action to cross the bridge.

The infield at WG is unique, and has a 'village' atmosphere all its own, and is my favorite place to watch a sprint car race.  We set up our little enclave with chairs, coolers, etc and have a blast.  If I want to walk to the inside of 3 & 4 I do, if I want to cross the bridge and watch a heat or two on Beer Hill, I do.  The freedom of movement is unparalled anywhere this side of a road race course.  Lincoln and Port Royal have gone to great lengths to mimic this aspect of the Grove.

And no where else in the sprint car world do you hear chants of "the infield s*cks" and "Beer Hill bl*ws".

It's not 'nostalgia' it's "Tradition".  And we don't need to lose any more of that in the Sprint Car World.

You do know Port Royal has had a tunnel to the infield for well over 50 years?

Stan, Port Royal, Lincoln and Selinsgrove all have pits outside the track so there are no haulers in the way when watching from the infield.

My father and I would attended the National Open from the mid 90's thru 2003. We sat in the front stretch stands the first coupe years before we started hanging out in the infield in 1&2. One year Bobby Allen and Richard Lupo were right in front of us in 1&2. We started Bullshitting with them and Bobby mention he was going to take Jacob and Logan out on the WoO tour. Who knew back then that not only did he do it they have a hell of a team now. We spent that night gambling on the heat races and Mains with Bobby and Lupo. Throwing dollars bills on an empty pizza box laying in the grass before every heat with those two was one of the best nights we had at the Grove.

Right on !

After the tour mentioned above - and the pits, my spot since 1983 is the infield, end of the backstretch, by the old pit toilet. Might only see half the track - and less when the circus comes to town - but that horsepower comin out of two, under the bridge, and down the backstretch is heaven on earth to me.

A very good reason for Port Royal to have the tunnel is so that during the 5 races they have during the fair, people can freely walk back and forth from the infield to visit the fair during down times and to grab something to eat.

Yea, I can see that, sounds like fun

But I like to see the whole race... to each his own

Someone else mentioned the thrill of watching the speed up close. I do that in the infield for hot laps or qualifying, &  cruise merch area, & just hang out & people watch

"And no where else in the sprint car world do you hear chants of "the infield s*cks" and "Beer Hill bl*ws""... thats funny, can't even hear that in the front stretch... but you can see the damn race! wink

I'm sure its different for regular locals than for guys like me who have to drive 4 hrs......
