That festival is huge, I'm really surprised

Things are getting strange

I guess I don't understand what is strange.  This is going to become the norm over the next few months.

These types of viruses  spread throughout the general population if left unchecked.  Since this virus hospitalizes about 10-12% of those infected (according to the numbers so far), where do the hospital beds exist for all of these people if this is left to spread unchecked?

I think most people I know do not understand the nightmare that could unfold on our medical community from this.  I have a daughter who is a nurse and many friends who are doctors and nurses.  They are scared shitless about what the hospitals could look like if this is not controlled.  And we've already seen what it looks like if it runs through a nursing home.

I am afraid as we go through March and April you are going to have alot of major events on TV in front of empty seats.

RRounds they were saying on the radio the other day that this is being contemplated.

I guess he thought this was such a big hoax is why he put a travel ban in effect as fast as he did. The funny shit is things like this don't give a shit if you back a R or D or a I. And I for 1 don't want anybody representing me that has done the stupid things they have done the past what 3 years of this Presidency & surely not the 8 years before that.

Austin just cancelled the SXSW festival. Last year this thing brought in over $350 million to Auston so to cancel this festival and lose out on all that money, well this covid-19 must be worst than what the Gov. is saying. Especially for people over 60.

Whats next March madness with no fans in the stands?

Rod

Did you see the news that the NBA has told it's teams that they should prepare for the possibility of playing games with no fans or press in attendance?     I would almost like to see that happen,  not because of the virus but just because of how odd it would be

I don't think this virus will disappear with warm weather------however, it may slow drastically.  We can all hope that is the case as May/June approach.

I live in SE Iowa and work in Coralville (Johnson County) and for all the panic on this deal it is business as usual. Traffic was just as busy as every other morning and its a normal day around the Walmart area. I could understand it more if it was like a death sentence if you contracted it but it's not.

Honestly not that concerned about this deal. Season opener at the Mecca and I will be sitting in the stands enjoying the start of summer.

I honestly don't think the Knoxville Nationals could happen without anyone in the stands. Reason many of the sport leagues here & across the world are able to play with no one in the stands is because of television contracts and advertising. Ticket & concession sales are just tip of the iceberg for things such as NCAA Basketball Tournament, NBA, international Soccer games, etc as a majority of the revenue comes from the T.V rights. That is not to say that they would not feel any financial hit because of no one in the stands but they can still make a sizeable profit.

Things such as Sprint Car racing and even concerts are a different story as ticket sales are a good portion of what funds the event along with sponsors. Without the fans attending, I don't see how they can go forward with the event. Hopefully they can get a handle on the thing by that time. I did see where the genome may have been mapped out of the virus which is a good step in the right direction if they can confirm it. Maybe now they can get to work on treatments and better understand how to contain the spread with that information.

The reason is obvious:
He's got shoes......
They're made of plywood...

(Sorry man, the devil made me do it.)

I think funding and Sponsorship may become an issue as much as whether the stands have fans in them. With the stock market crashing big business may pull or cut back sponsorships. taverns and resutants that may see reduced revenue from people staying home may not be as willing to support the local driver. Even family run teams from their own business may find it hard to continue racing.  I believe the economic hit in 2008 had a effect on racing. Things have been getting better since but if this new turmoil continues we could see a loss of funding for racing. I don't know if this is the end of the world or if it will fizzle out in a few weeks but the financial damage  is starting and could be a bigger problem.

One thing to keep in mind is that touring groups visit a lot of tracks that don't run Sprints on a regular basis but have a few specials. Those tracks up where I live survive with Modifieds as top class along with a mix of entry classes.  What happened in 2008 cut those hobby racers in half and they are the ones who keep these tracks running.  The entire country of Italy is on lockdown as that is the most effective way to stop it from spreading.  None of these little dirt tracks that dot the landscape from coast to coast can afford to take a big chunk of their season off.  I'm not making any predictions but as someone pushing 70 attending races with this virus going around is not a priority until it blows over.  I'm sure others in my age group are concerned provided they're not in denial like my son who thinks it's a hoax and laughs at me whenever the subject comes up.  I tell him that I'll listen to the WHO and CDC before I take the advice of a security systems installer.  He thinks that's pretty funny which doesn't lessen my concerns but instead illustrates how difficult it would be to get people to set their politics aside if this thing requires that kind of response in the US.

It's going to be very interesting to see how our general public reacts when we are finally told we aren't going to be able to do certain things for the benefit of our own health.  There will be mass shut downs.  Life is going to be VERY disrupted at some point in the coming weeks.  It's going to different and weird.

The reason many think this is overblown and a hoax is because most haven't witnessed it nor had to deal with any of the ramifications------yet.  Let's see what everyone thinks when their local hospital is over run and there aren't enough beds and ventilators for the critically ill.

This ain't a joke folks

One of the best things I have heard came from a scientist who is actually an Astrophysis. He was asked about and he said that he had just a point of view as he is not a biologist and that the virus is not within his specialty. He said that it seems that we are in a massive experiment worldwide which is, will people listen to scientists. Not politicans, not their favorite news organization, not facebook or twitter, not conspiracy theorists, but scientists.

In this case medical professionals, and scientists who study diseases who tell us to wash our hands, cough/sneeze into our sleeves, quaranteen ourselves if we are sick so that we do not spread it for our own good. I talked to my parents this weekend who were telling me this politican said this and another said that, this sports league is doing this, that concert is saying that. I asked her had she looked to see what the CDC had said or the World Health Organization. Have you heard what actual medical people and biologists who really do not have a stake in have said? A blank stare fell on her face. I told her scientists don't look for ratings or votes, and yes they may look for funding but on the medical spectrum the funding will always be there because people will always be concerned about health and they do not need to make a case to get more funding as it will come naturally. As one of my friend's wife who is a nurse told me, cornavirus is a concern to treat but they are also concerned on how am I supposed to treat a heart attack or car wreck victim if the ER and beds are full because of people sick with the virus?

You nailed it Nick.

I'm 46 and my kids are in their teens.  I know the risk to us is low when it comes to severe/critical illness, and very low when it comes to death.  This is what I'm worried about:

1. My parents and grandparents

2. My older friends and relatives as well as those with bad health

3. The medical system and the lack to handle something of this capacity---as you made an example of  (what if 1/3 of the doctors and nurses are sick and can't come to work?  If all hospital beds are full?)

4. The economic impact---Let's forget about racing for a second.  Think of the ramifications on your health insurance premiums if this were allowed to spread free across the country.  Think of the costs to health networks if 1/5 of the country got the infection over the next 12 months, and just 5% of those people got severe/critical illness and needed to be put on a venhilator.  Our politicians keep saying the media is causing the stock market volatility.  No.  The stock market is reacting the way it should be.  This virus hasn't even started spreading yet.  Once the majority of 60+ year olds stop contributing to our economy the way they normally do, it is going to be devestating for certain sectors.  Nothing to do with the media.

This isn't an over reaction.  As a matter of fact, I would expect some massive restrictions to our rights as Americans very soon.  We simply do not have the medical capacity to handle this outbreak if left to spread freely.

On a positive note, I truly feel the severity of this virus is FAR over stated.  I agree with many who say it probably has a lower death-rate than 3.4%.  3.4% would be catastrophic.  With all of the unreported cases, I would guess this will shake out in the .5-1.5% range. (not pulling numbers out my ass---comparing death rates of all areas of the globe and it varies from .6-6%.  Some major unreporting going on in places)  If this is the case, this is 5-15 times worse than the seasonal flu-----so, everyone needs to stop saying this is no worse than the flu.  It is, even at it's lowest possible outcome.  Also worse:  hospitalization rates.  Early on, it was aroun 10-12%.  I see our hospitalization rate in the U.S. is around 5%.  Much better than previously thought, but still terrible and overwhelming to most areas of the country when it comes to adequate medical care.

All I can say is-----pray the summer slows this down a bit so we (cdc and who) have some time to etch out a plan.  No, it's not going to be the end of the world or humanity.  No, it's likely not going to kill you.  Yes, everyone in this country will feel its affects.  Economically, we already will.

This ain't no joke...Once widespread testing kicks in within the USA, our cases will skyrocket.
