Karl was great in his day but I'm not sure how someone like him would fare today.  When I watch the crews thrashing in the work area it looks like all young guys in their twenties and thirties dressed in matching uniforms.  Now contrast that with some of the Karl qoutes at the start of the open red podcast and try to imagine Karl tamed down so as not to offend corporate sponsors and wearing one of those matching uniforms and being apart of what we have today.  The mechanical genius is likely still intact but I'm not sure how someone like that would handle how professional the sport has become.

It's always an interesting conversation to speculate how past heroes would perform in today's world.  I'm not so sure that they'd all fit in to the point where they'd have the same success today.  As was pointed out, a lot of teams had trick stuff in the past but everything today is over the counter cookie cutter stuff.  Sometimes the past is best left in the past and things that worked then wouldn't now.

I know what you are saying and there is a real good chance you're spot on but I also wonder if there would have been some ruffled edge millionaire who didn't care 2 hoots about racing but wanted to support the black sheep of the sport doing it his way just to support another crossed grain entrepreneur to get it done " the wrong way"

Even though I may not know you, I
care what most of you think!

that was a hell of a race last night.  i know most of my posts are about the virus lately...mostly because i don't want to see this go away or have people get hurt.  some of the best races i've ever seen have been this year.  really looking forward to lincoln tomorrow night.  they've been putting on a show just about every week and hoping the outlaws can give us another one.

i have mixed feelings about larson.  i rooted for him in nascar so always liked having him come into the area.  easily would have called myself a fan this time last year.  this season...i'm still looking for him to do something more than win races.  i couldn't tell you what that is.  wear a mask when he gets out of the car maybe?  just something to show he's not the guy who used that word and simply winning races doesn't cut it for me.  it cuts it for everyone else since people line up waiting for his souvenir stand to open.

Wear a mask? LOL!

The grandstands are all but sold out, dosn't seem to be a out break in the racing community.

Maybe he should drink a big glass of Kool-aid!

My guess for a short list  is he takes a week off or better and picks up the All Star circuit starting with Sheboygan on the 30th (26K to win)  then 34 Raceway (5K) , then Knoxville (5K) , then Husets (20K)

The break is more for Paul than anything. I talked to Kyle in the parking lot Saturday, which by the way might be the coolest thing about Kyle is they camped out in the middle of the field all weekend at Port Royal with the fans and took pics, tailgated and just lived a normal life, but he said Paul hadn't seen his kid in 3 months and wanted to go home for a little. Awesome to watch live.  I was pacing the room.  At the end, I didn't even care who won.  With 5 or 6 to go, it looked certain it was going to be settled between Donny and Brad.  Then Kyle comes out of nowhere and blows by Donny.  Donny had enough of having his ass handed to him and found another gear.  I wish it was 41 laps.  They might have crossed the line side by side by side.

" it looked certain it was going to be settled between Donny and Brad. "

Never looks certain when Larson is anywhere near the front...

So wearing a mask would show you he's not racist?

I think he made his apology & now is letting his driving speak for itself

Only guy i saw wearing a mask was the interviewer, & i doubt if Kyle had a mask ready in his car

Its a shame that nobody's wearing masks, IMHO.... hard to tell if COVID is spreading due to this in Central Pa.

Correct.  I told my son the outcome of the race and we were watching the replay this morning.  He saw there was only 7 laps to go and he says "Kyle finishes second right behind Donny?"  Where's he at?   Smile

Fans always have odd ways of choosing favorite drivers or disliking others. On one side of the spectrum there are people who will love for a winner no matter what. The driver could be cocky, arrogant, ignorant, grade A A-holem stand offish, etc but fans will like a driver no matter what. Conversly, people will hate a winner no matter what even if said driver donates his money, great with children, friendly, takes time out for the fans, etc but no matter what people will hate them just because they win a lot (basically because their favorite didn't win).

With that said, I have no problem with Larson winning as much as he has and probably will not get tired of it as he is one of my favorites. I do like other drivers more but if Larson wins, I do not feel like it is a bad night at the races. There will always be haters for every driver no matter what just because some people have to go against the crowd or have this whole scale of who is allowed to when set amount of races or money. Best example of that for me was the past 2 Nationals when in 2018 my buddy was cheering on Brad Sweet with the rest of the stands to win and erupted like everyone else. Fast forward a year in 2019 he tells me, " Well I know one thing, I don't want Sweet to win." I asked why? He stated "he's already won enough the past couple years and won the Kings Royal this year, I want someone else to win and win the money. I want anyone to win except for him and Schatz." I was like WTF you were sitting there clapping a year ago but all of a sudden he wins a couple more big shows and you turn on him. I wonder how many fans of Larson now that may cheer for him due to certain circumstances but may not neccessarily have any type of fan loyality to him like others.

Their is actually a Biblical principle that explains the fickle nature of fans.  The Lord who died on the cross was a good man in life and yet he was hated and put to a painful death.  He said;  “if the whole world loves you,  my Father and I hate you because the world loves their own.”  I have observed that people with the best souls have some of the hardest times.  As for the fans ...If they think the driver is  like them ...they are loved.  But if they find you actually have a more kind and generous soul they silently recoil and turn against you in some most odd ways.

The word says that God tests the ones he loves.   And others... he never wants them to call on His name. Since men mostly look to God with tears in their eyes... they thus need to go through some things to be drawn close to Him.   Otherwise ...they do not make the time.

I myself am very suspicious of a person who’s life goes perfect as that indicates one ...who God is not testing...for a reason.  But the word says that God refines his own like silver and gold.  Since both of these metals are refined by going into the fire multiple times.  So is ...the life of the good and chosen soul.  I believe, it is important to be loyal in good times and bad.

It is so very sad...  when the fans make it a bad time for the drivers.  I do so very hate to hear a winner booed.  As a lot of effort...time money and courage goes into winning.  What they are truly booing is the esteem with which God the Father holds their soul.  After all The Son of God was  ridiculed and Mocked and people stood in the street and called for His death.  And of all His followers ...there was no one who took the time and the Attentiveness to intervene ...  a man from the countryside was assigned to lift the weight of the cross ... off of Him ...and carried it himself for a moment In time.  A blessed soul that few have ever known about.  And surprisingly that one special soul was not one of the Lords chosen inner circle. Not one of his twelve apostles stepped in the gap that day.  With some rugged men amongst them ... Most all  fled and hid themselves in fear from the condemnation of association.  And The Lord himself had hurt no one.   He  said; “they hated me without a cause.”  But the crowd thought they had  a Good cause.  And they killed Him.  The Roman ruler washed His hands  in the event and allowed the crowd to pick who would live and who would die.  Crowds and mob rule is a scary thing.  And the ending was so very... very sad.  With thousands having followed this man in his life...in the end so very few were really there for Him.  The fans the groupies and the ones hanging on to receive a miracle from him were gone.  In the very end... He begged His own mother to look at Him.  It was in her eyes that He sought strength and comfort for His very own soul.  But He had to ask for it ...even of her.

Whether you believe the story or not there is a reason that it has survived over two thousand years. It speaks to human nature... in the most profoundly tragic way.  So loved ...by so many ... looking to take Something from him...hanging on his every word willing to take but not to share their own soul.  Or perhaps lacking one good enough to share.  Many eyes are lacking...dark and hollow.  In fact,  some fans eyes are scary.  More reptilian than human. And the Lord ... in his life told some of the pharasies that they were of their father the devil.  The original serpent.  So they do dwell and always have amongst us.   So you should be aware of their kind.  But, Whatever the case...As in all good stories there was foreshadowing of the end to come.  In the final hours the Lord retreated to a garden to say his final prayers and not one of the apostles was able to join him in his last prayer...they all fell asleep.  He was on his own till the pure soul of an angel stepped out of the other realm and joined him.  The natural goes supernatural.   And many people are lost to the understanding of the other realm...which they themselves do not see.

But , It is written the eyes are the window to the soul.  In the end There was only one set of eyes He could trust to respond to His  plea and give strength to His own tormented soul.  A set of eyes that he knew exactly what strength they held.  A pure soul. A soul That loved Him and always had.  The thousands of supporters were whittled down to one in a instant.  And none of those that He had chosen as friends...that He had journeyed with across the country and dined with and had shared much time and many adventures with .. made the cut.  Nearly all The fans and friends went by the wayside when they thought He was no longer capable of giving more to them. Greed and motives to acquire for ones self  and fear of losing showed out... so went the story.

Even the Lord himself was betrayed by his dear friends and followers in the end.  It was a bitter lesson... most bitter.  Your heart breaks for him when you consider what really happened and how quick the mob turned upon him.  There was no freedom of speech then... and is there really now?  The mob arbitrarily decides  what will be tolerated and what will not. And from whom!  The Lord was pUt to death for the message he delivered from his Father into this world.  It is truly and age old tale!  And fairness has nothing to do with it.  We must all be so very careful as we have come full circle now.  Freedom of speech has timed out in most all categories in a shockingly short span of time. Mob rule! Our new Reality!  Soon ... the Bible will be deemed an inappropriate book and will have reached its  expiration date.  Thought I would include a relevant story beforehand!© forgive me my faith based origins as it is not meant to offend but rather strengthen some. Blessings to those who appreciate its contents.

I'm not sure that I ever saw Steve Kinser get booed. He won a lot but he had a good personality, didn't fued with other drivers, and more or less seemed like a cool guy.

You must have never visited PA then.

Let's go Sprint Car Racing!

Karl was wearing those cute little uniforms 30 years ago. Big corporate sponsors like Valvoline, Wittgen, Mopar etc.... all threw money his way and I dont think they regretted it. He would fit in just fine today in my opinion. His ingenuity, knowledge and work ethic would produce winners in any era.

How can the Lernervile race be that exciting when nobody in PA knows how to prep a track, or does Western PA have a guy who can? At least that is what I get from this forum.....

If Donny beat the best driver in the country does Donny become the best driver til Thursday?

I was following on twitter and the tweets actually kept me excited about the battles. Must have been awesome live, the highlights on the WoO sight were great. My question tho, from the highlights, how in the world can Johnny Gibson even talk after a race like that? He was into it.

I've always thought that Lernerville was by far the best dirt track in PA racing wise(and possibly anywhere). It's just the perfect size and shape for 410 sprint cars, awesome blend of high speed and great racing. I wish L-Ville was in central PA.

Kyle unchracteristically messed up numerous times and didn't get any good starts/restarts, but he still nearly pulled it off. Surprised to see Schatz pass him and the 49 back for the win. Good to see Donny look like Donny again.

My only critique of Lernerville is where they have the giant scoreboard in the infield.  Obviously built before the days of live streaming, but it does seem to always block a fairly critical camera angle for the broadcast.  It ain't changing though, so it is what it is!

Same for the "new" scoreboard at Lincoln... what were they thinking?

They had a higher budget than everyone.  What are you smoking.  And to the rest of you guys saying Steve and Wolfie are better than Larson.  "They've won more races" "had longer streaks".  The 11 had 200 more horsepower and better equipment than the entire field.  Same with the Wiekert 29. Kyle Larson has the exact same equipment as everyone in the field. It's not even debatable.  Yes Steve is the King. And Wolfie is the man. Same with Sammy, Blaney, Doty, Jacobs... the list goes on and on. There's never been a better DRIVER in a winged sprint car than Larson. Period.

My rose colored glasses are pre-Valvoline, Quaker State, etc, etc - pre-higher budget than anyone.

Still stickin by my statement - even if the memory is better than the reality.

And, I think it's a bit premature to say "There's never been a better DRIVER in a winged sprint car than Larson. Period."

If my memory is indeed better than reality, then a contemporary by the name of Donnie Schatz might still hold that claim.

Larson has a great chance to surpass them all but he hasn't passed Steve Kinser or Donnie Schatz - yet.

Same for the "new" scoreboard at Lincoln... what were they thinking?

There are two score boards at Lincoln, they are not in the infield and don't block anyones view.
