I think something like 18000 died of the flu last year.
|
If this spreads uncontrollably over the next few months, far more than 18,000 will die. The only way to keep it from doing so is going to be with quarantine and distancing rules like were imposed in China, Italy, and Japan. We can't just treat this like the flu or it will be way worse.

WHO announces Coronavirus mortality rate has jumped to 3.4%. Most deaths are age 45 and up with children for the most part not affected by it(thank God). You look at the people in the stands at a sprint car race and I would bet most are older than 40, at least in Calif. If this virus continues to spread my wife won't be able to go to any races(because of her ongoing cancer treatment) and we went to around 44 races last year.
So if my wife can't go neither can I and maybe bring home something that could kill her. Only time will tell if we get to go to the races this year.
As for the flu being just as deadly, its not. The CDC estimates that the flu has resulted in between 9 and 45 million illnesses, between 140,000-180,000 hospitalizations and between 12,000 and 61,000 deaths annually since 2010. Thats not even close to 1% death rate. Lets hope they can get a handle on this, my wife really wants to go to the races this year.

You probably will be. But, you may not be watching sprint car racing in a month or 2. Let's hope they can get this under control.

Snopes is a very left leaning website. Not really unbiased .

To ignore this thing would foolish. With that said 24 hour news with the sky falling every time something happens gets old.In 2009 the H1N1 virus infected 61 million in the U.S. alone with 12,469 deaths world wide. It was in the news but people didn't act like the world would end because of it like they do now every time there is a problem. And we had SARS, the Bird flu and Ebola and most of are still here. Just this year already we were going to World War 3 because we killed a terrorist, the country was going to end because of impeachment and now this.

I am 68 and don't plan on getting anywhere near big crowds until this thing blows over. An increasing list of countries have forbidden large gatherings of over 1,000 people and a couple of US states are asking people to isolate themselves at home aka self quarantine.
I'm reasonably healthy for my age (three mile walk two days ago and I do exercise) but I'm still part of the age demographic. Floracing and MAVTV and some NASCAR will fill my racing needs if this thing lasts into the summer season. I trust the science and organizations like the CDC and WHO and do not ascribe bad motives and deception to those who are working around the clock to serve the public.

100%
I believe this is the biggest issue facing our country, the truth is only the truth to some if it aligns with their own views. It's not specifically a right or left thing as both sides are very guilty of the same things.

I'm not talking about the website as a whole, just this statement.
I think Snopes is pretty accurate. but thats another whole debate, not for a sprint car board
If people only believe what they WANT to believe, i feel sorry for the whole country

The CDC just issued a warning on Friday afternoon that seniors over 60 and people with health conditions should stay home and limit their exposure to the public. Avoid large crowds, large family gatherings, church, were all mentioned in the warning. Makes sense for people my age to lay low for a while until this hopefully blows over. Half the crowd is over 60 at the races so this could be a tough year for the dirt tracks if this goes into the summer.

Austin just cancelled the SXSW festival. Last year this thing brought in over $350 million to Auston so to cancel this festival and lose out on all that money, well this covid-19 must be worst than what the Gov. is saying. Especially for people over 60.
Whats next March madness with no fans in the stands?

The Arnold (Schwarzenegger) Sports & Fitness expo here in Columbus Ohio was basically reduced this weekend. Many of the events were cancelled, and competitors from certain countries are not allowed to compete. Several of the spectator activities were reduced as well.
I have heard other countries are having their sporting events either suspended or they are playing without a crowd.

Anyone still want to argue that this will have an affect on the racing season? This virus is going to have some sort of negative impact on dirt racing in this country. The scope of that impact is yet to be seen. Hopefully, a few local and regional events will be cancelled---and the virus will slow with warm/humid weather. Fingers crossed. If it doesn't, and WoO shows start filling half full stands, tracks will start cancelling their big shows REAL quick.

It is not changing my mind on the events I will attend this year, but right now I am re evaluating how to get there. Thinking of avoiding airports

Wonder what effect the coronavirus outbreak will have on Motorsport events since they have been announcing new cases of the virus in California and Oregon. There have been numerous nonracing events events already cancelled in California. Any thoughts?

IT IS HOW THE WORLD ENDED.... READ IT HERE.
The virus effected most of the early summer dropping the car cound so low for the Kings Royal that a central Pa. driver actually finished in the top 10. By the time we got to Knoxville a cure had been found. It seems calcium when mixed with rural American dirt and night air cured the disease overnight.. 600,000 people showed up for the race. Sadly, car count was still effected by the lost work time. Clyde Kynipp won the pole. Sammy, while trying to invent a trick fuel cheater system instead invented a cheap beer made with corn. He become so rich he bought Knoxville and renamed the race "The Sammy Nationals". and the race itself? Cousin Carl showed up at the last minute with a 2,000 HP sprint car, God was driving Moses was in the sidecar and about everyone named Kinser was sitting on the wing.... They led every lap.
