So far in 2018 there has been 1  ... 1/2 wing 410 race. Calistoga

Perris was rained out ..(.for the outlaws)

Outlaws come back and run Calistoga for 2 day show and thats it.

Only 4 chances to race on a 1/2 mile in 2018 with wing in California.

NON wing perris runs 10 races a year and Calistoga 2 nights..12 times a year in traditional sprint cars

keep in mind these 2    1/2 mile tracks are 9 hours apart.

If ya compare populations (lets use that old latin phrase:  per capita) then North Dakota has been the state with the most number of starters in the Nationals, with one, North Dakota with a population of 700,000 while California has 39,000,000 and Penn 13,000,000, so for Cali and Penn to equal North Dakota's results, they'd have to have:California - 39 drivers in the A Main and Penn - 18 drivers in the A Main. So California and Penn are way way under-represented in the nationals year after year.   Probably would be the biggest A Main in history eh?  Probably a few other states that would be over-represented when you consider the population they have to choose from.

Run the numbers but using total entries...not just A main drivers since that number is limited to 25

Lets throw this out there how many Pa drivers wanna come run the TROPHY Cup and see how they fair here in Calif ...or the PETER MURPHY CLASSIC...... I would venture to say Cali drivers do better back there then the Pa drivers would do out here ,,,,,,,,,,,

good point. i would imagine plenty of drivers would love the opportunity to race either of those events if they didnt have to tow across the nation. trophy cup roster is always littered with several tba's, which is great for fans anticipating surprise racers. we always welcome these drivers when they show up, whether filling a seat or towing. as for myself & our group we know there are several "legends" from pa. we've never had the chance or ever will have the chance to see race, unless we travel, that we'd love to see race our bullrings-hodnett, dewease come to mind. several years back, fred rahmer followed the outlaws out while the snow melted in pa. he described tulare thunderbowl as very intense. nite 1, he wasnt very good nite 2 i think he took 3rd & i believe it was last years tcup freddie jr. raced in. either way, i know i speak for many ca. fans we welcome pa., ohio, iowa or where ever to try the high banks of t-bowl raceway & the unique trophy cup format        p.s. dont want to offend any east coast fans by not mentioning names like shaffer, stevie smith, wolfe. we've seen them out here

I had the chance to talk to a California guy with good credibility about the racing in Cali.  He said for the most part the tracks out there are garbage compared to the midwest and places like Ohio and PA.  He claimed that lot of times they will water the crap out of it the night before then not touch it the next day for racing.  And they dont even use the sheeps foot.  I personally enjoyed talking to him as much as anything at the Nationals this year.  He had some really good stories and was really down to earth guy!  His NHRA ring was cool too.

As someone who has been to almost every dirt track in CA I would have to disagree! Most of our tracks are small bull rings with a cowboy up racing style with lots of excitement and passing! Sure we have a few tracks that aren't the best, but that is everywhere. I go to mostly 360 SCC races and KWS 410 racers and we have an amazing amount of talented drivers out here and good tracks. My favorites being the Tulare Thunderbowl, Placerville, and Petaluma speedways! When our drivers start dominating locally they have gone onto do great things nationally. Proud to say I have watched drivers such as Sweet, Larson, Macedo, Kaeding, Elliason and others start their racing careers at our local tracks in 360s. Kyle Larson has been to many dirt tracks across the U.S. and his favorite track is still the Tulare Thunderbowl. I would highly recommend going to the Trophy Cup in the middle of October and in addition to great racing lots of money is donated to the Make a Wish Foundation.  Smile

Looking forward to the new Golden State King of the
West series schedule!

What is the record number of crashes at Tulare Thunderbowl during the Trophy Cup? Looks like a junk track to me. Each time I've done the PPV it's been a crash fest. Hard for me to consider that entertaining. I don't plan on watching this year because of the carnage.

We've been fortunate to see them around here some the last year and this year, too. One set of drivers at home vs a bunch of travelers rarely proves that much. The All Stars struggle in PA. The Outlaws are the one exception. As for success against the Outlaws......the Outlaws win at a rate of around 2 out of 3 or better about everywhere they have gone the past 40 years. Only in recent years has it gotten better for the home town guys.

With the All Stars struggling in PA, you must be talking about years past. So far, this year out of 5 races the All Stars have taken 3 out of 5. Granted the 3 wins have all been from Aaron Reutzel, but an All Star none the less. PA drivers and tracks are tough to get the best of without a doubt. But there’s something about the PA tracks Reutzel has figured out. He stated in a press release that the PA tracks are a dry slick like he’s never seen and really loves racing for the PA fans. Hell he has been out to Cali a few times and beat the CA boys at the Peter Murphy Classic in Tulare and won his first WoO race at the same track. There are 7 more races left this year in PA for the All Stars so we will see.

Back in the days(80s-90s) the Gold Cup at Chico was a must see show.  The track was usually in really good shape and the racing was great.  Now Chico has gone down....wayyyyy down.  I agree with the above poster, people hype the Trophy Cup and with good reason, but damn car owners must lose alot of money at that demo derby.  Its like a outdoor chili bowl, lets see how many cars get upside down this year.  JMO

I think 2 years ago had 30+ flips in 3 days.

i will admit some years, races, track preps for trophy cup are better than others, but how can you argue with a packed house thurs, fri & sat nite. junk track, crashfest or otherwise, fans will continue to come to this event and support it. Dave Pusateri does an incredible job with every aspect of this event, especially Make a Wish. hell they feed you every day. sprintcarkelly, i may not know who you are, but i'm sure we've probably seen each other at the track or in the camp area, been going since they moved it to tulare in 06, and i agree the talent level is second to none & trophy cup will always draw top notch drivers. this year will be no exception 101 entries i seriously question your comments blazer00, yet welcome your response

Sorry to say I agree. A few years ago I went to Tulare for Trophy Cup, was all excited about full inversion, like the 60s when I started going to dirt tracks. But it was kind of disappointing. They were wrecking repeatedly in HOT LAPS! Way too many yellows during actual racing. First day everybody was wrecking on Turn 3, next day on Turn 1, the bump going into pits....

It got old....

Nothing in my comment to seriously question, really. I'm not bashing the event. But thirty or so crashes and flips in a three day event is way off the chart. And It's been that or near that number each time I've watched. I don't question the quality of the drivers in attendance, so what else can it be? The track is rough as hell.....cars bouncing nearly every corner every lap. It almost becomes a "who's going to survive" event. Think about this as you question my comments (and I know you were friendly about it).....do you go to the races to see red flags or green flags?  To me, that many red flags at an event of that magnitude when the track is the primary culprit is unacceptable. Knoxville Nationals.....four nights.....nearly 100 cars participating. How many red flags during the entire event....five (I didn't count)? And yes, some years more....some years less. And why so few......a smooth track. The drivers know they can let it all hang out at Knoxville and not get bit in the ass by the track. And not just Knoxville.....I watch races from all over.....and no where do I see the carnage on the track like at the Trophy Cup. Sorry. I hate to see equipment tore up and drivers put in an even more vulnerable situation than they already are.

"how can you argue with a packed house"?? Easy. Pro "wrestling" packs 'em in & makes a fortune

"Nobody has ever gone broke underestimating the taste of the American public"... H.L. Mencken

But i like the idea of the Trophy Cup, spent time & $$$ to go there

I just wish there weren't so many wrecks....

He grew up in Oroville California, outside Chico. Raced locally for yrs. Moved to Tennessee about 15-20 yrs ago when he hit the road and raced nationally. He's still a Cali boy. Unlike posse fans, Cali fans don't renounce it's locals when they hit the road.

and dont forget his brother, Bobby, still races at Chico...

Ascot was the greatest of all time..

West Capital wasn't half bad either..

I would love to see Kyle Larson as a full time sprint car driver, but you're not seeing the big picture here.   The top three cars in the Nationals were all owned by NASCAR drivers.   Would those teams exist without the money that came from NASCAR?   In Larson's case he also owns Shane Stewart's car.   Would Larson have the resources to have started a WoO team if he wasn't involved in NASCAR?    What about the All Star Circuit of Champions?    Would it even exist today without Smoke's involvement?   Again, NASCAR money involved here.

In the case of the Scelzi brothers, Schucart, etc., the pipeline to NASCAR might be closed.    There's already plenty of young guns there and not many available seats to fill.

When did Larson purchase the 57 team from Paul?  Enquiring minds want to know. Smile
