I'm no track prep wizard, so I'll just say that I thought the racing was pretty good for most of the weekend.  However, the around the bottom freightrain at the end of the races was a bit frustrating.  It was most telling on Thursday night, when Wolfe seemed faster than Hodnett in the makeup of the Summer Nationals and never even attempted to rip around the top for a shot at $20k.

Now, onto another thought.  I don't like the format of the 3 day program.  I think it is prohibitive to seeing strong car counts.  48 cars for the National Open is much lower than where this race should be, and will only see the car counts dwindle as the weekend progresses.  The idea of points makes sense at a place like Knoxville, where the field is split into two nights with a "makeup" night on Friday.  But running a 3 day show and accumlating points for each night just doesn't work well.

Instead, I'd prefer to see the top 6 in points locked in after the first two nights, then a full program run on Saturday night.  Run 1 lap time trials on Saturday night for everyone who shows up except for the top 6.  Invert the top 4 or 6 in each heat race, with the 4 fastest cars to qualify for through their heat race making up the remaining 4 spots in the dash.  Then, line up the rest of the night like a normal C, B and A would line up.  I think this would promote more guys showing up on Friday or Saturday night to take a shot at making the A.  Just more armchair promoting, but I think this would be a better program for the racers who want to take a chance on qualifying for this race, and the product on the track would be better for the fans.

I wish Susky would go to 410 sprints on Friday but  hagerstown tried it decades ago and it didn't work.  I went to Lindas Speedway on Friday and after a few rain delays they got the show in. Midget car count was low, but the race ended up with a photo finish, and the micros put on a good show also. I'm about ready to say to heck with the grove like I did for many seasons in a row, I'm not sure why I ever went back.  I guess just to hang out with friends. Like I posted before, don't go to the grove with high expectations of seeing a good race, that way you might not be so disappointed.

I've been to Susky & Hagerstown one time each. USAC midgets at Susky this summer was my favorite race all year, Pa. Speedweek at Hagerstown a few years ago was awful, huggy bottom & SLOW. can't wait to get back to Susky, will never return to Hagerstown.....

That said, you really think competing with the Grove (what is it, 30 minutes away?) would help anything? Car counts at both would be low. If WG wants to improve, I think they'll have to do it on their own....
