Guess what? I had a last minute change of heart and went to Port. Like I said, I love the place and I always will. Glad I did. That was bad ass man! What a great surface. That's what I've been saying all along. The track is great every week if they'd just leave the cushion alone and they did just that. Damn glad I changed my mind.

You mean they left the cushion?  I didn't go anywhere tonight.  Maybe the track personal is learning if you leave the cushion alone and have the right amount of water in the track you can do a lot of passing with that type of track.  It doesn't have to be slick from bottom to top without a cushion.  If they are learning.....it is about time!

There was a cushion, but it was black, or getting black in certain areas, so I don't know what rating you would have given it.

If they can run the cushion and it not be hard black and dry halfway through the heats.  I am good with that type of track.  I just hate it when it is slick from bottom to top with anything to lean on before the heats are over.  When there is a cushion it makes it better for slidejobs and more exciting for the fans!

I know one thing the look from the stands can be deceiving. I was on the track at the end of the frontstretch and turn one at intermission. The track was wet and you could see tire tread marks in it. I guess you can thank the kids for not allowing push trucks on it during bike races.

Given what you've said in the past, I think you'd have been very pleased. It slicked off and got real nice and clean through the middle and the cushion was spot on. Right around the fence and they didn't touch it all night. It was perfect. It was fast and it was wide. There were passes being made utilizing any groove imaginable and it was great to watch. I love Port Royal and if it's like that most of the time (obviously due to weather and other circumstances it's foolish to expect perfection 100% of the time) I'll never bitch about it again. What a great night. Sounds like Lincoln had a hell of a good race too. Wouldn't it be nice to be able to be 2 places at once sometimes?

I don't know if you can blame the kids. Usually by feature time, they've already hammered it to death at least twice and they stayed off of it all night. If the bikes were the reason, I say have bike races every damn week because tonight was great.

I couldn't agree with you more.  I to go to the other tracks.  I have always gone to the Port even though Lincoln and the Grove is much closer to me because my favorite dirver raced there more decades.  But since he retired the love affair with the port went away as well.  Will definately be going to Lincoln in 2 weeks instead of Ports Dream Race because on knowing what the track will be like.  It will be a Lance track and that makes me want to puke.  So instead of getting sick and puking, I will be going to Lincoln and watch Montieth ride the cushion.

Sounds like you saw a good show at Lincoln but unfortunately, your Lance favoritism track prep theory has holes all through it. The track was outstanding and the best part is that Lance still parked it on the stage. Another great win for one of the best teams in the country on and off the track.

He also has 8 wins this year,  more than any other driver this year in central PA.

I was talking more in 3 and 4, and by the end of the feature.

By the way, how about that header that kid took when his chain popped off in the bike races? Poor fella.

Yes sir I saw a fantastic show at Lincoln and will be back there in 2 weeks.  Overjoyed that I didn't go to the Port then.

Selinsgrove had a really nice track last night too(dust free even). Mark Smith won from 8th I think, passed Carberry on lap 21 and then Carberry put into the fence off turn 2 and flipped while trying to get back around Mark. A lot of great racing in lapped traffic. Shame for Carberry, he was running a great race. Probably should have settled for 2nd which paid $1500 last night. Glad everyone enjoyed their night.

I have said this before the reason the cushion is run in is to widen the racing surface so it's not a freight train around the cushion, The more cars you have in the pits the wider the track will get and sometimes like last night the cushion was already pushed up close to the guiderail before feature time therefore it didn't need ran in. There are times that the top is ran in if it is to fast and looks like it will be follow the leader around the top. The toughest thing with doing track prep is trying to make everyone happy.... you have drivers that like it fast around the top  and then you have drivers that like it slick, wide and a slower track. Then you have fans who like high speed freight train thru lapped traffic and you have fans that like a slick track with slidejobs. It's not easy to make everyone happy and if you think prepping a track is easy please pm me and we will give you a shot next week.

BStrawser26 I expect nothing less from you as you have always been a critic of Port Royal Speedway if you don't like the place please stay the hell home or go out Route 35 the next time you feel you got the urge to go racing.

I heard they had a pretty good race there last night and there was a cushion.  Hmmmmm seems to me racing is better when there is a cushion with slidejobs.  I have told Steve (4600) on many occasions that a little more water on the track makes the racing better.  I am a critic because I know how great the place can be if you put a little more water down in the track.  I hope you continue to not run in the cushion and the racing will be much better letting the drivers lean up against it and using slidejobs and it will not be a freight train.  Like I said, you guys are buffaloed by the owners and the drivers.

You know why they like it that way?  They don't have to make as may changes to their car throughout the night.   I do stay home most Saturday nights and the reason why poor track prep and no cushion at the Port!  What i mean by that is hard, black and dry before heats are over.

As long as the cushion is moving up on it's own, there's no need to run it in and I rest my case with last night. That was ideal. If the cushion builds half way up the track, then yes, run it in and widen it out. You can absolutely have a wide track with a cushion. With the way Port preps their surface, it will be exactly like it was last night 95% of the time if they leave the cushion alone. They do a great job on track prep.

Alas, I am not.  I'll be in LA.  I went out last year and enjoyed the hell out of the track.

I'll probably be headed back out again next year.
