I last talked to Kevin in Yuma when him and the Kaedings were arguing big time at the bar.  Brent later told me how everyone tolerants him because he's a great historian.  We were all drinking, but i think his quote went like, "Hell, my dad doesn't remember winning last weekend, but Kevin can tell you who came in 16th in the 1997 Gold Cup B Main."

I think if we could get inside Kevin's head he would consider it more like a calculated risk than a screw up.  He's committed to the nomad "Hunter S. Thompson" lifestyle and you're right, I don't think he's worried about what anybody thinks.

I've been following his posts and blog and it appears to me that he doesn't hold a job but lives off the generosity of the racing community from whistle stop to whistle stop.  I've always been surprised that there's still a few bucks being pressed into his hand and a place to crash wherever the wind takes him.  In any other scenario that would be considered a homeless drifter but apparently there are people involved in racing supporting that lifestyle.

He helped me get my foot in the door with Flat Out years ago so in spite of his choices and the fact I've never met him I wish him the best.  Weed isn't something I'm going to condemn a person for, I came up in the 60's and did my share.  Nevertheless, there are choices and adjustments that could have accomidated him and kept him out of trouble in that area.  I hear that Washington state and Colorado are both nice places to hang your hat.  California will give a medical card to damn near anybody and it's not considered a big deal out there  In other words he could have made choices that fit his lifestyle while still writing for racing publications but he would have had to give up the travel.

I've got a feeling that he'll pop up again somewhere someday.  He's got too much open wheel racing knowledge to lock the door and throw away the key.  Fact is I think at heart he's a pretty good guy that happens to not care much for some of the rules of society.  wink

I don't think Kevin is nearly as messed up as Hunter Thompson. Hunter did much more serious drugs & was very reckless with guns....

Hey, I saw Fear and Loathing in Los Vegas and know that but I took the liberty of making the comparison to add some salt and pepper to the conversation.  You're a detail oriented person, you must be an accountant or tax man by day.  LOL

My two favorite Hunter S. Thompson articles were his obituary of Richard Nixon and his trip to the Kentucky Derby.  Those were entertaining as hell.

I get it...

Actually, I'm not detail oriented at all, just a "know it all" wink

Plus I used to live near Hunter's neck of the woods in Colorado, got to read about his  shenanaigans in the local papers...shooting guns on the golf course, in his house, etc.

For the record I used the analogy in regard to his nomad writer lifestyle and wasn't referring to the number of substances ingested.  wink

I've read about everything Hunter wrote from his early days, both on the Novel side and especially with Rolling Stone, he was probably my favorite.  Johny Utah, the Kentucky Derby article was amongst his finest I always believed, his campaign trail stuff was over the top also, you can't get away today with what he managed to do back then,sadly....Gonzo Journalism at it's very best....

It is because of Hunter that I know exactly how to properly use a Playboy photographer tag if I should ever procure one.  Haha.

I only stopped on this thread to say one thing to "TheWizzard" and one thing to "Stroker Race".
"Wizzard" you are a lying scumbag, and I don't care what values you may feel you've supposedly added to society, if any. Whether you are a Purple Heart recipient, an International Red Cross Ambassador or a Doctor Without Borders.
All of which I doubt.
You are lying through your shit-caked keyboard to pretend to have heard my brother utter the words that "Jews are the termites of the earth and need to be exterminated and so on and so on". It's a complete lie and you absolutely know it, but you felt like making jokes along with your prison sodomy fantasies. I'll not attempt to shame you, since you obviously know no shame. I'll neither call you a termite, nor wish for your extermination, but you are an absolute liar first and foremost.
As far as "Stroker" deciding that he can speak for me and say I've given up on my brother, you should try harder than to just parrot a lie from a source who has long held animosity towards my brother and who has for years declared the same bullshit regarding me that you are. Whether we've ever met or not, I don't care. You can speak as ill of my brother as you wish, but you'll never speak for me, and neither will the source of the bullshit you pretend to quote.
Kev is in a bad situation of his own making, and he will face what the law has in store for him, but he isn't blaming anyone else or lying about anyone else. Look at your own crooked reflections in the mirror and convince yourself of whatever you want to.

I can do nothing but smile while reading this knowing that Kevin is sitting in his jail cell stomping his feet knowing that sprint cars are going in circles and no way of knowing what is going on.  He has earned every second he gets, and doesn't get...

I have always enjoyed his writings and his hostorical knowledge appearssecond to none.but as someone who has lost family to a driver under the influence, and as someone who has spent 42 years in the fire/ems service, i can feel no sympathy or concern for his legal issues. I do not know iowa law, but here in ny his prior record, along with the probation violation would find him getting state time, at least 1-3. One would hope this becomes a wakeup call about driving under the influence. Just stay at the track until sober.

Wonder if he has broken down yet-  no races, no weed, no beer, and no freedom.  Good stuff.  Wonder what will happen to the escort?

Thanks for the efforts Kevin.  If we all had the balls to fight the mess the lawyers have made like you do, it would be a different story for sure.  Its a tough road to hoe without Jesus.

Luna's Ford engine style that won 2 WoO titles and 3
Kings Royals before a weight rule against the best EVER
in their prime and now DOMINATES super dirt late model
racing is no longer allowed/wanted in a WoO sprint
car.... Was Luna a miracle worker?

Drunk driving, violating probation. Don't care how much he knows about racing or anything else, lock him up for as long as possible. Jerk should have been locked up from the start, not given probation!

Great knowledge of sprint car racing does not give him a pass for being a jackass. He's just a douchbag!
